Prayer Requests for Friend’s Bunny

Hey everyone. I just wanted to request everyones’  thoughts and prayers for my friend who’s bunny, Dust just started exhibitting head tilt today.

It started happening after her normal vet’s hours today, so she had to schedule an appointment with the 24hr vet (who is supposed to be bunny-savy). She just took her and is probably having her looked over as we speak. Unfortunately, she is in Orlando now and I am not. :/

My friend was away from the house for two days, and when she came back, Dusty had her head sideways. My personal thoughts are that it is probably E. Cunniculi, since the onset was so sudden. An ear infection caused by anything else would be more gradual, right?

I gave her all my knowledge on torticullus and what can cause it. I told her everything I could think of that the vet needs to do in order to identify the cause, including an ear swab/ bacteria sensitivity test and an E.C. titer. She doesn’t think it’s a head injury, which means it’s probably almost definitely a mid or inner-ear infection. Whether or not it’s caused by E. Cunniculi, we should soon find out (within a week or so I guess). I told her that in the mean time, the vets usually identify the bacteria/ virus in the ear and start administering treatment for that based on sensativity test at least until the titer comes back and explained to her what the difference in a high titer and low titer is. I also told her that if the vet is at all confused about E.C., to call me to get the phone number and information for the Alabama EARS vet -who is very well-versed in E.C- to consult with her vet. (This is what we did for Little-Bit’s titer.)

Dust is bonded with Oblivion, her other bunny, so I reccommended that at least for the time being, she not separate them, because if she has E.C., he probably does too, but that somehow her’s got the chance to flourish.

Yes, this is the friend who lost Nana last January and she is scared witless right now..

Aw, poor bun! (((((((healing vibes for Dust and stay well vibes for Oblivion))))))))))))) I have no other advice to offer other than what you have already suggested. And I wish your friend the best of luck with her bunny’s recovery. I’ll keep them all in my prayers. (hugs)

The last 10 nites of Ramaddan there is 1 nite in it of special prayer power. We are in the last 10 nites well 8 nites so hopefully I can catch it and God Allah or what ever you want to call God by will hear all of us me BB people and this bun will be ok.

Head tilt looks so horrible and scary. Prayers on the way. I would dread any of my buns getting it. I would be very frightened too.

poor Dust! i agree that keeping them together is the best idea. separating them noe would case them both to become depressed and that will not help Dust feel any better…

Unfortunately the emergency vet was a freaking IDIOT and wouldn’t listen to a word my friend had to say. He basically just gave her a pat on the head, a bottle of Baytril, and sent her home..

..which is great if it’s a BACTERIAL infection that’s sensitive to Baytril. But if it’s a viral infection? Yeah, great, Doc -you just gave a patient an antibiotic that will kill the ONLY thing keeping the viral bacteria at bey! What NOW?!

(This happened with Little-Bit to some degree. We had her on Baytril for about 7-8 weeks to fight of a staph infection, but we wound up killing off too MUCH of the staph, and it then became a yeast infection.)

Ugh..

My friend thinks that going ahead and giving her the Baytril over the next couple of days until her regular vet appointment is better than doing nothing…I am tempted to be of the same mind…doing something’s better than nothing.

I pushed for her to 1, call the Alabama EARS guy first thing tomorrow morning, and 2, INSIST that she can get an earlier appointment with her normal vet, ask to talk to him, and explain that it’s an EMERGENCY. So hopefully she’ll get somewhere with that.

Right now her appointment is set for Wednesday.

we both know wednesday is not soon enough. boston had head tilt and it was so scary! we had her on baytril for a few days before they put her on oxybendrazole. is dust eating? drinking? is the tilt getting worse.

oh i feel so bad for them, i’m sure your friend is scared and worried and just freaking out. tell her to rub dust’s neck as much as possible. boston loved that, as i’m sure her neck hurt quite a bit.

When Deanna had her Nystagmus, metacam and baytril were the first medications administered by Dr. Harvey. This was in case the problem was caused by an bacterial inner ear infection. These are very difficult to diagnose properly. I also was very disappointed with an emergency vet that I saw when Deanna was really bad, she seemed to just look up the symptoms on line and then said it was EC, prescribed oxybendazole, and that was it. I had to ask for SuQ fluids and critical care.

Fortunately so far she says she’s acting normally other than having her head tilted, and the only times she has balance issues is when she is picked up and held…poor baby.

And again, she DOES have a mate, which I think can probably make all the difference in situations like these.

Now that I think about it though, I DO remember them saying something about her drinking. A LOT. And if I recall correctly, that can be a symptom of E.C. We’ll find out soon enough, I guess. D:

A loooooong day’s wait before she can even see the vet.

I hadn’t thought of having her massaging her neck -I’ll have to suggest that one to her today.

oh no this is awful! i feel like almost 80 percent of vets are incompetent when it comes to rabbits! i quickly found that out searching for one!
