He stopped eating about midnight…wouldn’t take his favorite treats, no hay, only nibbled at this lettuce and then woudln’t have any greens after that. Drank only small bits, didn’t even empty a hamster bowl. Wouldn’t move much so I gave him simethicone twice, no effect. He is pushing his belly down on the floor wherever he sits or sitting hunched with hooded or bulging eyes, no telling what kind of sleep he’s had. I’ve been awake all night myself.

I am here typing because my husband (the big hairy guy who scares Fiver-can’t be helped) is taking him in to the vet right now in a car I am not sure is going to make it there and back.

Fiver’s ears were uncharacteristically cold to my touch most of the night. He refused the opportunity to do zooms on my bed and just laid down far from me but keeping me in sight. He’s also making strange movements with his mouth and tongue like something is stuck in his craw. He washes his face furiously, but other than that nothing else it would seem. His coat looks rough.

After seeing only two fecals in his box this morning, one much smaller than usual, and knowing he’s had mushy cecals for a while off and on and who knows if he’s getting any in, plus this strange behavior, I figured he’d better get seen. REgular vet is not in, but the on call is giong to look at him. Hopefully she’s not one of those who just takes a cursory look and says the one thing I don’t want to hear.

Everything I read that sounds like this tells me he’s either in GI shutdown, is getting there, or has an obstruction.

The last thing he had to eat was meadow hay, much coarser than his 3rd cut timmy…I’m hoping it wasn’t moldy, or just too hard on his system for his gut to push through. I’d held onto the hope that he would’ve passed it by now.

Please pray for my little guy. He’s just a baby compared to the other two bunnies. (only a year and a half mini-rex)…and my hubby will not know what to say to the vet to help him. (I sent a list with his symptoms and two samples of the hay in case they need testing.)

It’s not fair that I can’t be there. Stupid cars and stupid weather and (God love him) overprotective husband.

Poor Fiver…what did I miss? He’s just got to be okay. *cries*

          Healing vibes for Fiver!

Maybe he has teeth problems? That was my first thought since you mentioned he is making weird mouth movements. At least if it’s teeth then there’s a known cause that can be addressed.

Good luck little Fiver. Keep us updated!

I’m not sure, El…this strange mouth movement just started last night, so I’m thinking between that and the belly pressing, his insides are not doing well.
Thank you so much for the healing vibes! Bless you!

Just heard from hubby and doc:
Doctor doesn’t feel any obstructions, but Fiver is jumping each time she tries to touch his tummy (he does that, he doesn’t like his sides touched at all) and so we’re not sure if he’s in pain or what. She will try to get a look at his molars with the scope, but is not sure she can get in there with how jumpy he is. Incisors look fine.
She’s suggested administering some sub-q fluids and inject-able Reglan. They’re going to observe him for about an hour or so to see if he poops so they can get a sample (I should’ve sent the few that were left in his box from last night, darnit!) for testing and then if they can’t get that they’ll do an xray to be sure he’s not obstructed or hasn’t got hair trapped in his tum.
At least it’s not the bloat (he wouldn’t have lasted the night) and she is pretty sure his abdomen feels the right kind of squishy.

I’m thinking he hasn’t drunk enough water to pass that higher fiber meadow hay. Some of it must be impacted somewhere in his intestine. Or perhaps he hasn’t been eating cecals and his gut flora are getting stomped.

Either way…oy…I just got Mimzy back to somewhat normal…now this. *headdesk*

Hubby is being very good about all this. In town in a crappy car with a sick bunny that he has to wait to see what the vet will do….he hates to have to wait for anything.

                        So…we wait… >_<

The vet has scoped his mouth and other than some minimal spurs on his molars there is no sign of anything lodged there. The palette and gums are intact, no mucous.
She thinks she can get an xray of his belly without having to anesthetize him. I told her to go ahead and try.
He still hasn’t pooped. She did give him some sub-q fluids, but she’s not thinking he has any bladder issues, we just can’t find out why he’s not pooping.

Well some rabbits are very sensitive so even those spurs may be causing him pain. The gi issues may be secondary to the molar spurs.

Get Better Little Fiver, your Momma loves you so much!!!

What your describing sounds like what I’ve experienced with Bindi several times. In my experience giving fluids with a butterfly catheter worked miracles! My vet did some and then showed us how to insert the butterfly catheter and we had to do it at home. It was hard at first but made all the difference and I believe saved his life both times he had really bad statis. If he hasn’t drank much, he will be very dehydrated and unable to get his tummy moving again. I would talk to my vet about this. If you don’t think you would be able to do the fluids yourself, maybe the vet could put him on iv. Fluids, fluids, fluids. I am a huge believer in this now. If you do end up giving fluids make sure they are warmed first so as not to shock his body by injecting cold fluids. You warm the iv bags in a bowl of hot water and test on your wrist, like a baby bottle.

Wishing a speedy recovery for poor Fiver. Please keep us updated.

I think we’d have an easier time getting the fluids in him (provided we can get him to hold still long enough) than we did with the Pen-G in Mimzy, 1) because the meds are so thick that they tend to pool back out-and as such are hazardous, and 2) fluids would be just saline water and that’s going to inject a lot smoother than medicine. Probalby pool under the skin better too.

I’m keeping those spurs in mind, Sarita, I want to get this stasis cleared up first, then we’ll see about getting those spurs trimmed. I just hope I’m not too late getting to whatever was causing the cecals to mush up.

                                                        Okay, we’re back. *whew*

Well, first off, Fiver was given some inject-able Reglan and some sub-q fluids. The doctor took his xrays also and, although she saw some stuff in his stomach (‘ingesta’ they call it…can mean anything from food to hair) she only found what looked like gas in the small intestine. He peed for them and left one tiny poo.
Now I just checked on him in his habitat again and there’s a bunch of poos in the box and on his bed. It’s like he can’t stop now! 0_o And he is finally eating a bit on his own. I bought some fresh Oxbow Timothy from them and he’s munching away on that from time to time, then he’ll go over and nose around in the Critical Care I put in a bowl for him. He actually takes that on his own, whereas with Mimzy I can’t even syringe the stuff in him, he fights it.

I am just awash in tears right now because I am so relieved to see him eat and poo again. I realize he could relapse, but for now I’ll take what we’ve got! It seems he is more comfortable too. Since he couldn’t have gotten much sleep last night, I’m letting him rest as much as possible, but keeping his door open in case he wants to go “Whee!” ^_^

So just a few questions, because the phone lines were down at the vet office when I left and I forgot to ask these…and it looks like they will be down all night. 0_0
Critical Care…how long can it be left out before it should be removed? Does it spoil fast?
Benebac….I’d hate to have to squirt it in his mouth and stress him out again, but I think that may be the only way to get it in. I don’t think they gave him any at the vets….
They told me one tube every 3 days…but is that all at once? The packaging says something about two times once every third day (confusing…) And how do you store the remainder? In the fridge I’m guessing.

Thank you all so much for all your healing vibes! I think they’re working, eh? ^_^

AND…while hubby was in town….HE FOUND A CAR! Totally the right price and the kind of SUV we were looking for….So we once again have a ride that will make it there and back, thanks be to God!

For a day that started out so terribly wrong from the get go…it looks like things will be right again now.

Sorry, I’m getting here late. Wow, what a day! (But you got a car out of it! Wooot!)

I’m not going to be much of a help here with  both of your questions. I haven’t used Benebac before so hopefully someone else will be able to help you, otherwise, I would just confirm with the vet whether they want you to use it all at once every three days or give half two times on the third day. Usually there is some reason for it, or they may say it’s just fine to split it up if that’s easier for you. But I just have no idea why they would have you do it differently than the instructions, so it may be best to confirm with them about their own instructions.

I also have never had a bunny that would just eat it out of a dish on their own (NICE!). So I’ve always had to syringe feed. I know that I can leave it in the fridge for 24hours, so just in regular room temp, i would think it need to be removed after 6 – 8 hours (But that’s just a guess so I’d have to do a little net search when I get a second)

I am so glad that Fiver is doing better – Big WHEW!!

The tech didn’t give me that specific an instruction, just said the Benebac was once every 3 days. The package seems to indicate it’s split into two doses…so I think I’ll go with that.
He actually ate the Benebac right off the top of the Critical Care…which he’s been nibbling at for the last 3 hours. 0_0 I was sure he wouldn’t take to it at all…he seemed to be disgusted by the simethicone and maybe that was why he was moving his mouth so funny.

Helps not to have to squirt it into his mouth too…it’s good he’s not taking either of them all at one gulp, though you can see he’s finally hungry. Plus he’s still picking at his hay as well, which gives me joy. ^_^
Now I don’t guess this will be the way of it the whole time. I may yet have to syringe feed him…but for now he seems to be doing very well considering how miserable he looked only twelve hours ago.

I’ve looked up CC on the web too, BB…and I find a deplorable lack of info on it’s spoilage. But I’ll probably take the mixture out before I go to bed, and I’ll just watch him while I’m still up and see if he’d like some more later. You’re supposed to feed it 4-6 times a day, so that tells me it should at least be refreshed every 4-6 hours.
He looks so much more at ease. No more belly presses. And boy did he drink from his bowl when we got home! I had to fill it three times!

WHEW! I’m so sorry I wasn’t around for this one! Sounds like a gas episode to me, although I suppose it could have been a near-stasis thing too since he wasn’t eating for so long. I’ve had Little-Bit have a few gas episodes that were upwards of twelve hours, and then all of a sudden…it just passed! Well either way, we’re really fortunate that we know how to spot these things and head them off at the pass before they can get too serious. It sure helps them tons when they get those sub-q fluids. I’m considering asking my vet how to administer them myself, because it would just make me feel a whole lot easier whenever I have a scare knowing that I have that in my arsenal.

lol @ Pam…Yeah, well, I can imagine it was not fun for Fiver to ride in with him…believe me, you guys haven’t seen him drive and for that you should be thankful!
Hubby told me that while they were at the vets waiting to be seen, he tried to put his hand in to give Fiver a noserub and Fiver thumped at him with his front feet. (I’m sure his back end was too uncomfortable at the time to give a proper thump). So yeah…another of Mr. Toad’s Wild Rides!

Sarah, I was surprised to hear the xray didn’t find anything, I was certain from the expressions he was making that morning that he had something stuck. I am just glad it probably WAS only gas, but boy did he give me a scare!

Being able to find a good vehicle (and it’s not bad for a second hand truck…it’s a 93 Suburban, I drove it home yesterday while he followed in the trash truck) was an added boon to the recovery Fiver experienced.
He is still doing pretty good today, already making more poos and eating his new timothy hay. Looks like his cecal production is coming back well too, I saw him bend low quite a few times last night. He kept wanting to come back out of his pen while I was trying to sleep and managed to escape it when I pulled the CC out at about 4 AM, little stinker! I had a hard time shooing him back in. But just to see him move like that again told me he was on the mend.

I realized I’d actually gotten to the bottom of that 45 pound box of 3rd cut when I checked it again yesterday. I have another one sitting here, but I hope (since I ordered them at the same time) it’s not moldy or anything. I still think that meadow hay may have just been too coarse for him after the 3rd cut…it’s the only thing I can think of that would’ve caused this episode.

He surprised me last night by finishing his three tablespoons of CC, I gave him more but he wasn’t as interested. This morning he’s only nibbled a little of it. But he’s eating his hay, which is more important now, I think.
I won’t be on much today simply to take time to exercise him a little extra and keep that gut going. That and somehow I have to find time to gather my tax papers for my accountant…always a fun job. >.< You guys should've seen how Mimzy was glaring at him last night…now that his meds are pretty much done, he realizes this 'other' bun is getting the attention and I'm definitely hearing some distinct nose noises from him from time to time and when I look there's the stink eye waiting for me.

An aside, my vet got themselves a new ‘clinic cat’…a cute little manx, black and white tuxedo and spats named “Mowgli”. Add this to their orange marmalade tabby “Antonio” (and enormous cat!) and their other black manx “Binx”…what a full house! ^_^ They are a cute trio for sure…Mowgli entertained my wait by playing with my ponytail. xD

Anyway…enough rambling…..Thanks once again for all the good healing vibes! BB.com vibes are the best!

We’ve had our share of lemons…the last one being one of those nice, new Tahoe type SUV’s (which I am beginning to substitute the “S” with an “F” for obvious reasons) that we took for servicing at a local shop… when we didn’t want to have some pricey (and unnecessary) extra repairs done, they wiped the computer chip and now it’s a dead duck in the yard. Can’t prove that they did this though, so we’re out about 5 grand for that puppy. >.<

In AK, you go through cars about 1-2 times a year because the weather and the roads are so bad. It’s an expensive place to live, to say the least. But once you’re here, you’re kind of stuck because you can’t make enough $ to move.

Fiver is still doing really well today, thank God…and all of YOU for your healing vibes! He was a little balky at his trough yesterday, but I see lots of nice bb’s in his box this morning and he’s still eating and came out to run around for a while again really late last night. (If I even open the door to replenish his food or water, he hops out now…lol.)

The hard part was, I’ve been up for a few days for almost 24 straight and to top it all off, last night before I could exercise Fiver, Mimzy developed some LOUD gas that took an hour and two shots of simethicone to quiet…so I was up till 3:30 AM and I am a limp rag right now…lmao.

So a question…now that he seems to be eating okay, do I stop the Benebac? I would guess it’s not necessary now?

Well, other than he still seems to be having some loose cecals/fecal pellets, he is eating and eliminating pretty well, just not back to his normal amount.

Those loose stools concern me though. Anyone here know how a sample should be collected, stored and how long it can sit before being left at the vets’? They aren’t the ones that stick like glue anymore, but they’re still coming. Maybe it’s just going to take some time to get his bowels back to normal.

Vet called today and said to continue the Benebac, although she didn’t say how long. I guess I’m to use up all of the tubes.

Let us know how you wind up getting the sample for the vet. And I hope you get some rest now, I know it’s been exhausting for you all.

I think with all of the meds it’s normal for him to have some loose stools and I know i don’t have to tell you to just keep an eye on it, so just keep us updated.
