Hi everybody, a few days ago I noticed matted hair near my bunny’s right eye. For context she is 8 weeks old and has been with us for a little over a week now. I did a quick research and read it may be due to dental problems or a blocked tear duct. I gently swab her eye area with my finger and didn’t feel any moisture/wetness, is it something I should worry about? She’s been eating and binkying just fine.

Since she’s only 8 weeks old, I’m doubting dental problems. A runny eye can be caused by a blocked tear duct or even a URI. If it’s dry right now, you could try cleaning it up and then seeing if it comes back. If it doesn’t come back, then it could be eye irritation (dust, hay poked eye, etc.).

            Hi PastelBunny!

What I found in my research is that this could be a problem that can come and go, it can be caused by bacteria or fungi, it can also be due to dental issues. What this might be is conjunctivitis or pink eye. I don’t think it is a very serious thing to worry about, just like the pick eye is to us, it will just irritate your bunny, so it would probably be a good thing to take her to the vet if it doesn’t get better in a couple of days, so she can get treatment.

            Good luck! 😀

I can see some paper litter  or bedding in the background, do you use any wood based products also?   Some products can irritate the eyes and nose.  Is this area in the corner of the eye staying dry now?  Holding a warm, wet cloth over the eye can sometimes help clear the drainage duct.

Years ago, had a rabbit whose had tearing eyes on both sides when he was young. The vet at the time said it was probably due to the face shape changing as he grew and that it would likely self-resolve. That turned out to be the case.  I don’t remember it being an issue for very long.
