Sorry to seem so neurotic about Coco – but I know this is one place that it will be understood.

Coco did nibble some greens and hay off and on- and one sliver of peach to tempt her. I have not seen her drink anything yet.

She has taken to hiding out under the bed – which I assumed was fairly normal, as she has been doing some light hopping – then resting.

Until I think I caught her messing with her sutures.

I tried to re-direct her and get her so I could check to make sure she hadn’t done any true damage – and away she went under the bed.

I am a bit scared that she is under there digging away, although I realize that is not entirely likely.  I have the collar but am Very hesitant to put this on her as I think the stress would be tremendous.

Also – Her poops have ranged from fairly loose to soft – and she has been peeing. I cleaned her litter right away so she won’t drag her bum in the leftovers. I am assuming this is normal.

She is still super mad at me

Is there any way that you can cage her for a few days so she is easily accessible?  You might be able to keep an eye on her better that way.  Many bunnies take a few days to get back to normal after a spay, and the meds definitely can mess up their digestive system and cause strange poops.  If you offer her some favorite greens by hand will she take them?  Is she on any pain meds right now (I’m sorry if you discussed this in your other posts)?

The main things to look for:

          – bad – redness/swelling/oozing of surgical site, indicative of an infection
          – good – eating anything hand fed at at first, then slowly progressing to nibbling on available foods.  In my experience with spays the progression goes hand fed greens & treats -> hay nibbles -> pellets last.
          – bad – no poops or decreasing size or frequency of poops
          – bad – teeth grinding or hunching, indicates pain
          – good – activity level is increasing

Good luck and keep us up to date!

Thanks osprey – I have her caged ( she hopped out past me and into her cage) – and she just thumped at me.

I know I am still in the doghouse, as I just offered some mint, parsley , a sliver of peach, and dandelions by hand and got the bunny back – although she does seem to be nosing through them and eating some right now.

Her eyes look less like she is sick too – she had that rough look to her this morning.

I am assuming that I can worry “less” about the drinking if she is eating the greens.

ooh here’s where I can help-that eye thing-the ‘sick’ look??
When they are in surgery, they rub lubricant on the eyes-sooo that’s why they look sort of runny and scary!!

Be sure to check her incision since you think she was messing with it. If you find that she is picking at her sutures, you may have to put the collar on her until you can get some pain meds (I know Osprey asked this already, but DID the vet give you pain meds?)

KK was right about her eyes, it’s normal for them to have the “ick” look because of the goop they put on them during surgery.

You are right that if she is eating greens, she will be getting much of her fluids from that. Greens have a high percentage of water.

                Keep us updated.

                Sending healing vibes!

Just to follow up – Coco is doing much better. The first night home was tough – no, no pain meds were given and I failed to ask for any, as she had spent the night at the vets post surgery and I picked her up the following morning.

But her first day/night was difficult. I am not sure if it was because she is an older spay or just the way her body reacts. At any rate, the first night we ended up in a bunny burrito with me cleaning her bum, as she had some ripe awful poopy butt going on and I worried about her getting any on her belly.

She was, of course, highly offended at the cleaning of her bum and anal gland ( since I was already elbows high in poop…)

A quiet day followed and she slowly came back to herself – Normal looking poop by Thursday afternoon – some drinking of water and more vigorous eating of greens. By Friday morning, she was allowed to come out of her cage since her incision was nice, clean and dry and she had not picked at her sutures at all. Her poopybutt has resolved and she is now close to the “normal” Coco of before.

I am still getting some rabbit disapproval, for sure, but I think I am being ever so slowly forgiven….

OH good regular poops. Good thing you were there to clean her bum. Even tho she was totally dissaproving of everything. As she feels better she will return to her normal Cocoa self.
