So far Nova seems to be doing well. She came home and got a long drink of water and ate some pellets. I know she also ate hay either before or after surgery as I had some in the carrier with her and there’s quite a bit missing. No poops or peeing yet, but like I said, we just got home. She is on antibiotics (name later), and has a cone that is specially made for rabbits. Though she doesn’t have any pain meds for me to give her, which worries me. I plan on going back tomorrow and getting some. Her incision is perfect right now, and since she was given pain meds before we left the vets she seems to be feeling pretty good right now and is moving around well.

Wow no more worries it is done and she is fine.  I am so nervous about Ruby’s and I have to do it while hubby is away.  I hope he doesn’t notice when he gets back.  Oh gosh I can hear it now.

I am glad your bun is drinking and eating so well already.  Thats great.  Yes you can ask about the pain meds. I would and I will on Ruby’s big day too.

just keep a close eye on her. if she’s in a lot of pain, that can stop her from wanting to eat. also, make sure she stays confined for at least a few days. too much moving around can hurt the incision. why was she given a cone, did the vet say she was going for the stitches?

Why is she on antibiotics?  is she having other health issues?  I wonder why they sent home antibiotics but did not send home any pain meds?

after Mead’s spay she was given an antibiotic and pain shot there, and i was sent home with Baytril and Metacam… should she not have had the antibiotics… is that not normal?

She’s pooped, peed (is that how you spell it?), and is still eating well. She’s definitly sore, but she’s stilll grooming herself (but not the incision). The cone is off for now, but I bought it at the time just to be on the safe side, and for any time I might need one in the future. The medicine she’s on is called SMZ-TMS(SULFAMETHOXAZOLE). From what I’ve read it’s a pain medicine as well, but if anyone is more familiar with it I’d like to know more about it. I know it’s not what’s standardly used in rabbits.

It is pretty routine to give a pain injection and antibiotic injection at time of surgery (before pet goes home).  But it is not necessarily the norm to send home antibiotics after a spay.  Spaying should be a pretty sterile procedure so some vets feel that antbiotics are not needed- unlike for a dental procedure where bacteria could likely be introduced into the bloodstream.

If your vet has had good luck with send home antibiotics for post-spay treatment (maybe to prevent possible infection?) than that is likely why they were sent home.   And if you have a good bunny vet- then that is what is important- that they follow what they have best results with.

SMZ-TMP is used as an antibiotic and to treat coccidia- it has no pain relieving properties that I find a reference to.

I had my boyfriend go to the vets again today and they gave him some Metacam so Nova is probably feeling much better now (she’s sleeping so…). The ouchie (as I’m calling it now) is looking perfect and she’s been nibbling on food off and on all day. Though her appetite isn’t very big, I shouldn’t worry unless she stops eating and pooping at all right?

^yeah, it’ll take a week maybe for her full appetite to be back. this is major surgery, but she sounds to be doing very well.

She’s doing really good today, and she’s definitly getting back to her old self. She even lunged and tried to bite me today! I know she is tired of being so cramped up in that cage, but it’s the only one I have that opens fully at the top for easy access. Only 5 more days of this to go…

Yup, I actually talked to all our vet clinics in Edmonton and area, some vets send home antibiotics, some are really hesitant to give them to rabbits; Some sent home pain meds and some didn’t. I guess it’s just the way they do things and the way they’ve found that works. I did not get anti biotics but I did get pain meds for the Kahluas spay, but when our shelter bunny went in for abscess surgery he got two weeks of baytril, but no pain meds.

So glad your bun is doing awesome lostbutnotforgot!! It’s such a trying time for us as bun parents as there are more risks for surgery for buns (but more risks if they don’t get it done! rock and a hard place!) I found posting here about progress really helped support me through the massive worry of the day of and the next couple of days

Just a couple more days then you have a lifetime to make it up to her!!

Yeah, I could see why they wouldn’t be good to give, but at the same time, the vet doesn’t know if the rabbit is going home to a nice, clean, indoor environment. I do think that pain meds should be a must though, especially with the way that rabbits stop eating when they’re in pain. That being said, I’m not a vet and I don’t know the side effects of pain meds and I’m sure that they have good reasons for not always prescribing them (for instance, if they don’t feel the pain they might be more prone to do something that further harms them).

Yesh, I’m so happy I finally got it done! Not doing the surgery wasn’t an option for me anyways as her hormonalness (digging, general unpredictable biting), and stronger urine (which I’m more allergic to) meant that it had to be done if she was going to stay.

                                3 more days to go…
