Hello Everyone! This is my first post on binkybunny, and can I just say that I am extremely pleased that I’ve come across this website! I have a bun, who is 6 or 7 months old named Bonnie, and she is my first and only bunny as of right now. I am always buying books and reading online about bunnies, and annoying all of my friends (none of them have rabbits, or understand my love for them) with stores about wonderful cute things that she does! Finally, I’ve found a place for people like myself who own rabbits and can’t get enough of them. Thank you thank you thank you!!

Anyway, the point of my post is that yesterday was the big spay for Bon and I was just looking for further information from people who’ve gone through the spaying process. My vet told me to try to clean her incision with water and a cotton ball, but she won’t let me anywhere near her for the time being, she is cowering in the back of the cage hating me. anyone have any advice? Or any more general information? Thank You !

Did your vet give you any pain meds to give her?

I’ve never heard about having to keep the incision clean though.

It generally takes a full day for them to even recover and can take up to 3 days for them to fully recover. I wouldn’t expect much activity right away.

Try tempting her with some greens – MooBunnay suggested breaking the greens to emit their fragrance to entice them to eat and I think that’s a great idea and also try tickling her nose with the greens to encourage her to eat.

Do limit her activity to her cage area for a full week or more if you can.

No my vet didn’t give me any pain meds, and I can tell she’s in a lot of pain and its killing me! Which is another reason I’m unsure about cleaning the wound, I don’t want to hurt her further. I’ll try breaking the greens and all, but so far all she’s done is turn her head away from any food. She’s drinking a lot of water though.

Can you call your vet and ask for some pain meds or see if you can bring her in for a pain shot? I think you should.

My Jess had pain meds & was on cage rest for almost a week.  I had to put a barrier up, so she couldn’t get to the higher levels in her condo.  Jessica spent about the first 24 hours laying in her litterbox.  Despite giving her all her favorite veggies, she wouldn’t eat.  She was spayed on a Friday, and she was back at the vet on Saturday.  She got fluids and was put on critical care for a few days.

Is she eating?  Pooping?  Peeing?  These are going to be your big determinants.  If she isn’t, you need to get her to the vet ASAP!  I don’t want to freak you out but I also want you to understand that she should be eating & pottying at this point.  It’s not uncommon if she’s just loafing it, as I said Jessica spent the first 24 hours in her litterbox.  You can also try to feed her baby food.

                  Welcome to BinkyBunny, SnuggleBunny!

The hand fed greens idea is a good one.  When I do post spay care I like to get fragrant, long stemmed herbs like parsley , cilantro or mint, and then gently poke the broken stem end into the bunny’s mouth.  Usually when she tastes the herb juices, she instinctively chew, and take in some food that way.  Alfalfa hay can be used in a similar fashion if you have any.  In my experience, in the first 24 hours she’ll eat very little, but it is important to get her to try to graze a little.  It is good that you have seen her drink, hydration is important too.  I’ll second the idea of pain meds too.  Some of the clinics around here give them as a matter of course, and some don’t.  My feeling is that she’ll recover much faster if you give her a few days’ worth of pain meds, so I always give them to post-op bunnies for 2 days.  Perhaps your vet can give you some Metacam for her?

-WHEW!- good news! she’s eating now!!! i tried hand feeding her, and she ate some greens and pellets and is grazing on some hay. She’s still being a little loaf and hanging out in her litter box, but she didnt come out and walk around a little, when enticed by a treat. While she was out i checked her litter box and she peed but only 2 poops!

now i’m just waiting on my vet to call back about the pain meds…..

You have gotten great advice!  Welcome to this site.  Good luck with your little girl and I hope the vet gives you some pain relief for her.  Why he wouldn’t in the first place is beyond me…I’m sure it hurts!

Generally metacam is given. If your vet doesn’t call back, I’d just phone another and ask for it and tell them the situation.

Welcome to the site and CONGRATS on making the decision to spay! Keep us posted on the recovery and we’d love some pics when you’ve got less on your mind

                          Hi –
My Coco is 9 days post spay and is really Just starting to act her old self as of yesterday. For the first 3 or 4 days, I kept her caged ( on the sage advice of folks here) – and offered her lots of little herbs like mint, parsley and watercress and her favorite spring mix salad. She moved very little and had a bad case of poopy butt on her first night home.

By the second day home ( three days post spay) she was a bit better – but super quiet. I kept her cage partially covered so she could hide out.
She did not love being kept caged – but when I did try to let her out, she moved around FAR too much and irritated her sutures.

At nine days post, she is leaping onto my bed and doing binkies in the morning. I even saw the Bunny flop earlier.

But yes – those first couple of days were rough. She looked like hell, and even lost some weight I think. I just kept a really close eye on her, brought the water bottle TO her, left a nice amount of water on her greens so she would get extra water that way and made sure her suture didn’t get poopy.

Welcome to binkybunny – this has been a wonderful resource for me and Coco!

Welcome! my Callie was spayed Friday and yesterday AM was scary because she didn’t want to eat, but I enticed her with fresh mint, marjoram from my garden and went to the store for some water cress and fresh parsley and cilantro. I kept sticking the stem end in her mouth and I think she ate just to get me out of her face. This am her eyes are brighter and she’s eating on her own, I wish she’d drink more water though :s

I definately agree that post spay can be a scary time!  You have to watch everything and at times encourage the munchin’  I’m glad that everyone found this site to get suggestions from.  It was BB that encouraged me (oh so gently ) to get her spay on & to know what to expect post-spay.  Unfortunately my Jessica didn’t bounce back or is it hop back so quickly.  I learned so much here, reinforced by my vet, to get her in tip top shape.

                                    WHAT A WEEK!

so i’ve finally found some time to come on and update, and if I can figure out how, post some pictures.
I got Bonnie spayed through the adoption agency that I got her from, dispite being over an hour drive, because it was a significantly less amount of money than my vet, (and I’m paying my way thru college right now) and she specialized on bunnies, while my vet more cats and dogs. She told me she doesn’t usually give out pain meds and to just monitor Bon and she should be fine. By thursday of last week she was eating, drinking, pooping, playing and even the flop !! so i was finally relieved, however to my extreme horror, i woke up early saturday morning to her teeth clicking in pain becuase she ripped out the stitches, and there was a gaping hole in her belly. poor girl! I called back the vet of the spay and they said they were closing before I would be able to get her there, of course, and that it should be fine till monday… MONDAY!?! she has a hole in her belly!!! so i called my vet, and there was no rabbit specialist there. running out of ideas i called my county vets emergency hot line and they took a look and said she would be okay i just had to pay close attention to her, make sure she doesn’t pick at it, and as long as nothing oozes out (ew!) she should be fine….
aparantly its like pulling teeth to get pain medication for a rabbit in new jersey or something?!!?!?
so i called out of work for the past 4 days and have been sitting attentively by her side, movie marathons with her and my/our boyfriend, and reading.
luckily, she’s doing okay now, its well on the way to recovery, closing up, and she is frolicking around like her usual little self, but i have to keep close watch on her at all times to make sure, any change in anything and i have to rush her to the vet.
this literally has been so much stress and panick on both of us, and i can’t wait for the whole ordeal to be over with, so i can sleep at night and not jump up every ten minutes to look at her and have her stare back at me like “jess…. go to sleep”
                                    wow.

                                    i hope that worked!?

That is just unbelievable!  Poor little bun.  I cannot understand why your vet would not give you pain meds.  That’s just awful.  You certainly are a great bunny mom to be so concerned and watchful.  Glad she’s better.  She is a darling!
