        Hey everyone,

So I dropped off Sammy at the vet this morning for his neuter and I’m going to pick him up in about 4 hours. I cleaned his whole cage thoroughly and I’m sure the vet will give me some tips when I pick him up, but I wanted to hear some post-neuter experiences/advice from others that have already gone through it with their bunny. Any stories/thoughts are welcome!

        Thanks!

Just saying Hello. I just had my Stinker neutered 2 weeks ago and they kept him overnight. He came home the next morning and they said just to check his incision daily. He had some liquid pain medicine I had to get him to take twice a day. Other than that, he pretty well acted normal. They said to watch the incision for redness, drainage or swelling, and especially pus. I’m sure Sammy will do fine. **healing vibes**

Bumble was done last December. I took him in a 8 and picked him up at 4. When I cleaned his home I removed the different levels and placed his basket and bed on ground level so he could not jump and possibly hurt himself. When he got home he was a little out of it. He only wanted to sit in the bed, lie down or try to sleep a little. We placed a small bowl of his favorite greens near him and checked on him frequently. About 10 pm he started to nibble at the greens. In the morning another bowl of greens were gone.

His litter box habits were not normal for a couple of days. The poops were different sizes and not a lot of them. The vet gave him long lasting pain meds and checked with us the next morning and from what we described said he was acting normal for post surgery . By the evening of the next day he was almost back to normal, biting on the door trying to get out. We did let him out but limited his activity for about three days.

When we took him in for the surgery we were very anxious about the recovery and outcome. I know the males recover faster but we could not believe how fast he recovered.

Yeah I asked about keeping him there overnight but they told me they don’t do that for neuters because the rabbits recuperate within a few hours… A few questions I have are:

-Am I supposed to limit him to his pen for a while and not let him out for his usual run time? If so for how
              long?
-Can I feed him all his normal stuff, including veggies?
-Should the vet defintely give me pain meds for him or does that vary?

              Thanks!

Oh okay thanks bumble bunny. I didn’t read your post before posting the second time. The veggies and run time comments were helpful. Thanks to funnybunnylove as well!

I was given a care sheet for after the surgery and they said to limit his activity, I.e. no running or jumping as much as possible..jumping on things, etc.. for 5 to 7 days. So he stayed in his pen for that time. They said to feed him and give him water and hay just like normal though. I paid extra for pain medications. I had to sign a form before the surgery that I wanted him to have them and then they gave me what was left to take home.

So I actually just brought Sammy home. The vet said he woke up easily and was doing well so I could come get him. She gave me liquid pain meds to give him once a day as needed. He grew another pound just in the last 3 weeks (!) and is now 3 pounds (and about 4 or 5 months).

I let him out of his carrier and he immediately walked around sniffing stuff out in his pen (probably cause I cleaned lol). He licked some stuff to make sure everyone knew it was still his, drank some water, went in and out of the litter box a few times and then bunny-loafed in his bed. Did this whole process again a couple times.

He took a raising, slobbered all over it and spit it out lol but no other eating so far.

He already wanted to get out of his pen but I’ll be strong (or in his words ‘mean’) and keep him in there for at least 4 days or so.

                    Thanks for the support!

Boys usually bounce back from surgery quicker than the girls since it is less invasive surgery.  Try to restrict activity and give pain meds.  Griffiin was eating just hours after his neuter- Cotton only started nibbling that night and eating more and more then next day or 2.

An easy way to check to see how he is healing is to make him stand for a treat. So make him stretch up for a raisin, and peek at his boy bits then. Don’t let him do too much jumping or running, with the pain eds he’ll be feelign better than he actually is

We have flopping, a little hay eating, tooth purring when being pet and some poop! Woohoo!

Yeah I’ll have to check his incision with the treat trick cause he will NOT let me pick him up lol

Glad little Sammy is doing well after his neuter. I guess he doesn’t know something is missing :~) I love that the boys bounce back so fast after their neuters.

Yeah, he seems to be doing well. Ate a little bit more hay.

I just have one more question. He seems to be grooming the area where the incision would be a lot. Is that okay? Did your bunnies do the same thing? Could he over-groom it and open it?

Maybe he does know something is missing then. It probably itches. I think it should be okay. It really does too depend on how the vet does the incision.

Okay thanks Sarita, I’m going to try to give him his pain meds for the first time in half an hour or so since the vet said his pain killers would wear off by around 8… She said to definitely give him the meds tonight, but then from tomorrow see how it goes…
