Bindi is recovering well after his surgery (he had on Tuesday). He’s been on cage-rest since then only coming out to cuddle and get ice on his boo-boo. He is getting pretty restless.

How long should I wait before letting him out to run again?

How do the stitches look? Are you able to see the area or is he wiggly?

i think the  recommendation is several days, but the boys are gonna bounce back quicker.  he should be limited for about a week i’d say, but if he’s seeming like he’s pretty much okay, you can probably let him out for a short time, supervised.  if he starts to do too much i’d put him back in.

I am not an expert, I know other animals you are suppose to try and restrict their movement until the stiches come out.

I know that can be a hard to do.

Cadbury had internal stitches that didn’t need to be removed. My vet told me to keep her restricted for 10-14 days. After about a week, I started to let her out for very short amounts of time, and I tried to block off things she liked to jump on (couch, etc). The boys usually recover quicker, but I would still wait about a week until he is back on full exercise. It’s not easy, especially when they are feeling better and want to run!

I also think the week estimate is good. I know you hate to torture to poor things, but it really is for the best all around and you don’t want them to hurt themselves more. Of course the guys have a easier time and heal faster, just be sure he takes it easy for a while.

Have you been checking how Bindi is healing? My vet recommended that I check my bunnies healing progress once a day for the first week just to make sure that nothing gets inflamed or is swelling for too long etc. If you are doing that, you can get a pretty good idea of how the swelling is going down. I’d definitely wait until the area is no longer swollen, because if it is, it is likely the bunny can “bonk” it on something while running around, and I can only imagine how much that would hurt! Wait till the area looks back to normal before letting Bindi run around – I think the estimate of a week that some other people mentioned is a good idea, you really can’t be TOO conservative in this case.
