Today our rabbit Mimi got neutered. He is doing well! Eating some hay and pellets and drinking water. My question is: when do the effects of neutering occur re: aggression? He has been an incredibly aggressive rabbit for about 6 months, to the point where we couldn’t even pet him without getting attacked. Now I may be jumping the gun, but after his grogginess wore off today his behavior is a million times better; we can pet him, we can reach into the puppy pen to clean it and we still have all our fingers. Maybe this is because he’s feeling weak/tired/sore, but man, is this how our rabbit will be from now on? If so, then YAY! It has really made us sad that we couldn’t pet Mimi, or even stand too close to his area without our clothes getting nipped on. I really hoped that getting this surgery done would improve his behavior, and I just hope it continues!!

Unrelated, but we have Mona Lisa who is not spayed yet (don’t worry, that will happen in the next month or two!), should we wait until she is spayed before trying to bond? Or can we do it when Mimi is healed in the next ~2 weeks?

        Thanks!!

Hello! I’m glad Mimi is doing well after his surgery!
Yes, you should wait until after Mona Lisa (love that name btw!) has been spayed and healed before starting to bond them. The bonding section on this site has a lot of helpful information about the pre-bonding and bonding process, plus it has a lot of tips. It’s been very helpful to me because I’m going to bond my two bunnies once they’re ready too. Good luck!

Glad the surgery went well! Right now Mimi is probably really groggy and “drunk” from the anesthesia and needs time to heal and come around. That being said, he should get a lot better with aggression in time. For the first 4-6 weeks he could go through a post-neuter craze and be even more of a brat, he could be up and down, or he could just keep getting better.

I agree with BB8 about the bonding. You definitely need to wait until she is at least 1-2 months post spay, as males can still produce sperm and impregnate females for up to a month after surgery. Also, he could still act hormonal with your unspayed female around, so that is also something to consider. Bunnies that are truly bonded, are when both buns are fixed. You’ll need to wait the 1-2 months for her hormones to die down and for her to recover, in the time you can do some prebonding.

The other thing to mention is that males can still impregnate females up to 4 weeks after their neuters! So make sure they can’t reach each other at all during that time.
