My 1.5 year old male Holland Lop bunny is only about 1.5 pounds. He feels very bony – when I run my hand along his spine, it feels sharp. I’ve looked at a bunch of different resources that say this is a sign of an underweight bunny, but he eats just fine, hops fine, his coat is beautiful and shiny. He eats a lot, shows interest in food and treats, drinks normal, pees and poops normal. He seems like he’s in great shape and health. Is he just skinny, or should I take him to be checked by a vet?

Hi there It does sound like your bunny may be underweight. You should be able to feel the spine but it shouldn’t feel sharp like you are describing, more blunt and rounded. What exactly are you feeding him and in what amounts? I Initially had trouble with my Luna bun and keeping weight on her but she has since leveled out and remained more stable. Sometimes some buns need more pellets for example than others.

The other option is of course that your bun could be ill and it’s certainly something that is worth getting looked at. Worms are a common cause for a hungry bunny that is losing weight or struggling to keep weight on. Of course there are lots of other options which your vet may look into but they will probably ask about diet first.

            Hi,
Thanks for responding to my question. Unfortunately, the rabbit passed away very suddenly only hours after this post. The vet is doing an autopsy to figure out what caused it.
            Thank you.

I’m very sorry to hear that. Let us know what the result of the autopsy is if you could.

Hi everyone. Thank you for your concern about my bunny, Winston. The vet did an autopsy of him, and he couldn’t find anything. No disease, no tumors, no blockage, nothing. So it’s pretty much inconclusive. The vet did offer to send off tissue samples, such as from his brain, to see if there’s anything more to it, but I declined. Perhaps it was just his time.
