        Hi all

One of our foster homes has said she thinks the bun has ear mites (I’m a bit cautious as I know they are hard to see?) Nanci would like to take a look and see if we can treat ourselves to save vet bills (we’ve had a lot lately at the rescues).

So can you all let me know what meds are OK to give (names of meds) and Osprey (or anyone who remembers) could you share that dosing calculator link?
I’m going to look at the bun tomorrow evening. If it’s bad of course she’s going to the vet but we were hoping it’s just something we can treat

We’ve used Revolution for this – I’ll have to see if I can find a chart that one of our vets gave us somewhere. You would need a scale…do you have a baby scale?

We have a food scale, it’s in kg and is correct to .000 kg

She wants to use ivermectin, is that something we can use? I can’t remember and my search function isn’t working to find old threads…

Yes, ivermectin is fine but it must be dosed very accurately and I do believe it takes 3 dosages and if I remember correctly it is an injection too. I’m not sure of the cost of this compared to Revolution. I like Revolution because it is not an injection. I’m not sure if Ivermectin comes in another form too – maybe Katnip might know and if it does come in another form I’m not sure how effective it might be too.

Ivermectin can be given orally or by sub-q injection. I think she wants to go with oral since it seems to be as potent as sub-q (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2235873) and has ivermectin because horses take it too!

This stinks because in my medical stuff I’m making charts on for bunnies I haven’t done ear mites yet!! I’d feel so much better if I’d already read up on it *hits the books*

Then I would ask the vet for a dosage chart for rabbits instead of winging it since there are so many formulations – I cannot think why the vet wouldn’t be able to provide this for you. I’ve only used the ivermectin as an injectible.

The bottles of Ivomec that are used in cattle- and are typically injectable meds- can also be given orally.  But it tastes terrible if the reactions I have seen in rats and dogs are any indication.  But injectable IvoMec (Ivermectin) can be given PO and SQ (sub-cutaneously).  The formulary I have reports are variety of dosing schedules.  I will see if I can find a more standard dose schedule.
