poorly bunny??

Hi there, we got Leo the bunny yesterday, last night his poos were normal. this morning they were like runny toothpaste and  gungey and he keeps grinding his teeth, louder that our previous bunny used to, he has been given some  probiotic and charcoal. hes still drinking and still eating some hay. Is he going to be ok?

You need to see a vet ASAP – it sounds like an emergency. I don’t understand why you would give him charcoal either.

Charcoal is commonly used when you suspect poisoning. It soaks up the toxins…it’s more commonly fed to dogs who are suspected of eating rat poison or something. I’m not sure about rabbits though…

Don’t give him charcoal.. for one. And stop with the probiotic, that could be causing the runny poops. If his digestive system is already working, you do not need to give him extra help, like probiotics. I give my rabbit a balanced diet of hay, and pellets and a treat once and a while, and her poops are always normal. I noticed she had runny poops the day that I got her because I gave her too many carrots for treats because I was so excited to have her and I wanted her to be happy! (bad idea because she had runny poops all over my bed!) But a couple hours after she started eating her hay and pellets, her poop returned to normal.

Grinding teeth loudly means the rabbit is in pain. You need a vet. The charcoal could stop the bowels moving or slow them down too much, you DON’T want that happening to a rabbit. It’s given to humans as well as dogs because it absorbs poison, but it also makes the stools very hard.

If she’s eating hay it’s great, that’s the best thing for a rabbit.

thanks, the breeder gave the bunny the probiotic and charcoal AFTER he started having the runny poos. hes had NO treats just pellets and hay and water, ive taken the pellets away now and left him with hay. hes still drinking but not really eating and poos are stull mushy with like a thick clear bit of mucus running through it

He needs to see a vet and be checked for coccidia – it is fatal in baby rabbits. So hop to it and see a vet asap.

its 10pm here and they are closed, but I have found a more rabbit savvy vet that I shall try in the morning. I really hope hes going to be ok

Until then please try your best to keep him as hydrated as you can. Syringe him some water every hour as much as he is willing to take. Have him sitting upright to avoid him inhaling the liquid. And go extremely slow. Dehydration will get to him quickly if he has diarrhea. And first thing in the morning take him to the vet asap. Bring a stool sample if you can so they can test for coccidia or other illnesses. Even if he appears to be feeling better still take him to your vet.

Also have water available in a bowl AND bottle. Sometimes when buns are sick they prefer to drink from a bowl because it’s easier access but keep the water bottle just in case he still prefers the water bottle.

he is if I hold it in front of him, but he does also go for a lick in his bowl, he doesnt take much but hes still interested in it. I offered some hay in front of him but he nudged my hand away, offered him a pellet and he snatched it off me and munched it down. He runs around when not in his hutch but doesnt move much in his hutch just sits and cleans himself. hes not bloated and theres not much water in his poo its a bit more like a slightly thinner toothpaste. Its so heartbreaking to see a bunny poorly,

If I were you, I would try to find an emergency vet. Tummy problems can get super serious very fast.

breeder says she thinks hes fine, and to see how he is in the morning. so i think i’ll do that for now, nothing seems to be going my way at the moment

Ugh. breeders need to stop pretending they know everything a vet does. your bunny does not sound”fine” at all He needs a vet, pronto!!

The breeder is not giving you good advice. What you’ve described is a medical emergency for a baby bunny. He needs medical treatment from a rabbit savvy vet as soon as possible.

Please keep him hydrated, see NewBunnyOwner123’s advice above, and take him in first thing tomorrow morning.

Poor thing is worse this morning, only drinking if i hold it in front of him and not eaten since last night. My boyfriend has the car until 9am so will take him to the vets as soon as hes back.

he just ate a tiny bit of hay and keeps having a spurt of being still and cleaning, the a run around the pen, then cleaning etches not too lethargic, still willing to explore, but not as active as he should be, gave him a tummy massage and heard some gurgles and smelt some lovely gas, so I think he is a bit gassy. just trying to convince him to drink more now. keep your fingers crossed. I watched my last bunny die of GI. at the time we didnt know much about it, took him to the vets who said there was nothing wrong he was just a bit cold and told us to see how he was the next day, the next day came and he was worse, I called out the emergency vet, my boyfriend held him in his arms and he went before the vet had a chance to get here. I can’t handle losing another bunny, so ive found this rabbit vet that everyone raves about, its about a 20minute drive, im just hoping the drive doesnt stress him out too much. He has to get better, Ive lost one bunny, which tore through my heart, Ive only had Leo now for less than 2 days and its heartbreaking knowing hes not right. 1 hour until the boyfriend is back and I can use the car! Wish us all luck!

hes looking a bit better, hes quite inquisative. just been off set by the stress of moving to a new home, car journey and being on his own. I think hes going to be ok but the next couple of days will let us know. thank you for your support! I’ll keep you posted.

I would still get him a vet check up asap. Get a clean bill of health and let the vet know what has happened the first few days of you having him. And still bring a stool sample. I am glad he is feeling better though!

Just thought I would let everyone know, Leo has made a full recovery, he is a very happy bouncey baby bunny now and loves his playpen and his food! Thank You for all of your advice
