So, when we got Brambles, our Palomino/Dutch mix boy, we were really worried about his water drinking habits. We didn’t see him drink at all for days! We had a bottle and a crock and did everything we could to show him what each was and where water came out. On the fourth day we began seeing him attempt to get water out of the water bottle (he didn’t even attempt the crock). He would bite and scratch the water bottle tube, getting droplets of water out of it. After a couple months of that, he has definately improved his technique, only biting it a few times before drinking from it like a normal rabbit (but still biting it after a couple sips, to “keep the water flowing” in his mind).
When we got our new rabbit, we gave him the water bottle and we decided Brambles would learnt o use the crock. He eventually did, but every time he goes to drink he will bite the rim of the crock 5 or 6 times and scratch the rim of the crock with his paws a couple times before he finally puts his face in and starts drinking. If the crock is all the way full, he never puts his face in, instead just biting the rim, which causes a tiny bit of water to splash up into his mouth each time (from the movement of the bowl).
I think it’s hilarious that he is showing this kind of reasoning, albeit quite flawed reasoning. He learned that biting his water bottle seemed to produce water, and when presented with this new water crock he applied that same tactic to it, resulting in water, too. We do feel sorry for the dumb moose, but he’s so cute when he’s working hard on biting and scratching the water ‘out’ of the crock…lol
