POOPY BUTT !

since my rabbit got an abscess in his mouth from a broken back tooth  in July 2012 I have had a  major problem with poopy butt

I have him on martin mills slow rabbit pellets as well as just timothy pellets he receives 1/2 cup of both, he gets unlimited hay I have orchard, grass, timothy, botanical, and on occasion a small amount of alfalfa… but  he really doesn’t like hay. he gets two papaya tablets oats, and a few piece of dried strawberry.

but whenever I give him vegetables he gets extreme poopy but at first I thought it was the pellets so I cut those out and than I thought it was  his treats so I stopped that but than I realized it was the vegetables I only give him  3 types a day I tend to go between these vegetables Cilantro, dandelion greens, Mint, Basil, Romaine lettuce,Carrot tops, Dill leaves as well as occasionally Celery, Broccoli,  Brussel sprouts and cucumber , spinach    .. every time no matter what type he gets poopy butt.. what am I doing wrong? if I don’t give him any vegetables he if fine no poopy butt I just feel bad if I have to cut it out completely.. is there anything I am doing wrong? please help!

Dental problems are usually the cause of poopy butt, not the veggies.

I have a serial Poopy Butt too. But right now she is also having a phantom pregnancy due to the presence of my young Foster bun Pascal who is intact for another two weeks. Blossom and her sisters and Mother should have been done months ago but fate has continually intervened with all sorts of drama’s including a ceiling implosion that left me without a ceiling in my home for 3 months and construction crews putting it back together then straight into a heat wave. Not having post surgery bunny girls in the cold, enduring power tools when they are already stressed or trying to recover in temps of 104F. In March I get my performance bonus the temps drop and Pascal will be neutered courtesy of the shelter and I can use his cage for the girls post op recovery whilst he enjoys condo accommodation (that’s if he is still here, he goes on the adoption site this weekend.) I am hoping that because Blossom is such a stressed anxious bun a lot of the problems will resolve once she is spayed and there is no further ambient stress. Bloss’s little teeth are perfect and she has a good diet but she has always been on the sensitive side from a kit. She needs a butt bath now but it is unbearably hot again and she is so hyper from the false nesting I don’t want to give her a heart attack.

I would cut out those oats though. I would try to keep encouraging him to eat hay.

But the bottom line is that dental problems and poopy butt are very related. Certainly diet can be a factor and the fact that he does not like hay may contribute. Have you tried different types of grass hay?

I only give him oats as a occasional treat in place of any other store brand treat the only other treat is freeze dried strawberries.
he has had any type of hay I can find I put tons in the cage I have orchard grass, timothy hay western, botanical, and on occasion a small amount of alfalfa hay along with a few others I just cant remember the names as well as different brands of hay.
when I give him the veggies he gets diarrhea. I have cut out a lot of stuff tried just giving him one type of veggie at a time. could they just have to much water for him or could it be pesticides? should I try organic? are there certain veggies that you think might help or are better for sensitive tummies?
the only reason I am asking is because I really don’t want to cut veggies out I no they need them as a important part of there diet I just want to try a better healthier way for him because having poopy butt I no is not good. he gets about the equivalent to 2 cups a day and he never eats it all
I also clean his cage twice a week with a rabbit friendly cage cleaner..
