Cookie (5 months) has been very good about not pooping anywhere outside her cage (downstairs). She is litter trained and leaves pellets outside her box but its not a lot and she doesnt do her “stuff” outside the cage at all. Well She loves coming upstairs but recently, found a corner in my toddler’s bedroom and marked it. Now she poops a lot there, not just drops a few pellets but actually poops there.
Yesterday i put the litter box in that corner and she peed in the box a few times, but yup she pooped outside of the box.
I steamed the carpets thinking i would remove some of her scent then i placed her on a litter box in the bathroom next to that room hoping she would get the message that she could use the bathroom for her needs and watched her pee and drop 3 pellets in the litter box. i was hopeful that she got the hint.
But then she went outside into the room and pooped in the corner again and left a good 15 of them. Its like she held her poop on purpose just to go back to that little corner.
Dont know why she is doing this
She had access to upstairs for months now and never did this and would hold it until we put her downstairs often for her to do her business. -
They have natural preferences and it’s easier to work with those
I don’t have children so perhaps Beka’s suggestion is best-but perhaps you could put the box down when the toddler is away and the bunny is out-or your supervising and remove the box when the bunny is not out?-Again not a mom so I don’t know the rules on animal toilets in kids rooms -
I did think about leaving the box in there but yeah the thought of my toddler thinking, “mmm these look like cocoa puffs” didnt excite me LOL. So im hoping she likes the bathroom. Our double sink has an empty under sink cabinet where i put some towels for her to lounge around. enticing her i hope.
So for now i have *tried* to keep her out of that room. There is a lot of “keep that door closed!” around here lately. A gate is hard at this point where my toddler wants or rather until now has had independence into/out of that room or screams bloody murder if she cant. Yeah reached the terrible two’s this week to make matters worse and they are TERRIBLE, lol. So its just constantly watching the bunny making sure she doesnt sneak in when my kids open the door.
She tries! Yesterday she hopped in while we were there and was just casually looking around
all while i watched her with that ”im watching you” look. She didnt drop anything and then ran to me/wanted me to pet her. After a few strokes she looked at me like “ok we cool now! and ran to the corner and dropped two quickly so that i couldnt stop her. Sneaky little girl. Scooted her out pronto. The worse part is she must be rubbing her “lady parts” all over that area of the carpet because even though she doesnt drop pills in certain areas it smells like fritos or salami all over there
ewwwwwwwww. no where else upstairs does the carpet have that scent. I noticed her poo has recently acquired that smell. Scent glands? I guess it is hormonal. Now i will steam the carpet AGAIN tomorrow. (the crib has been placed there now to keep my toddler from sitting there). She is sooo good about hanging out in all the other rooms with no problems, no pills. Just likes that room a lot i guess.

oh i need to check the poop for coating then!
We bought this house used and its the same old carpet from old owners, so there is that possibility. I never thought about that!
My cleaner is not a “steamer steamer” its basically hot water sprays and vacs it back up. But i will try too sponge wash it with white vinager this weekend! thank you

But i figure if its coated then ill know for sure its marking. Somehow that will make me feel better thinking there is hope after we snip snip her that she will be able to go in that room without poopin one day - You must be logged in to reply to this topic.
