        Hello everybody,

So this is not a huge deal but I am very curious as to whether or not there’s a reason behind it…Chubs has excellent litter habbits. He has never ever urinated anywhere but his litterbox since we’ve gotten him. He poops in there too but he also poops quite a lot inside of his cage. Like maybe 1/4 of the time, he uses his cage instead of his box. It is still inside the cage so like I said, not a huge deal but why does he do this when it’s obvious he knows what the box is for and is so good at using it? Anybody know? If there’s not a real reason for it, is there something I can do to get him to use his box all the time? I’ve been picking up the droppings through out the day and putting them in the box, hoping to encourage him, and it seems to have lessened a little but…anything else I should be doing? Or is this really normal? Thanks!

Pretty normal. Most will occasionally poop outside the box. One, to mark territory – the poop usually has a shiny coating on it with territorial pooping. The other reason is when they’re munching on hay. They poop and eat! Is his cage floor lined with anything such as paper, litter or bedding? Sometimes they’ll regard the floor as a big litterbox if it’s covered with similar filling as their box.

Well his cage floor has a towl covering it and his litter box has the recycled paper stuff? Not really similar in texture but I have noticed the shiny poop thing, so maybe he is just claiming his cage. Interesting, thanks!
