When I moved my horse here I did not get “proper authentication” from the Rural Planning commission, and while they said I was allowed a horse, I never followed through on the paperwork – mostly because it cost $600 + and my neighbours with horses said they never did such a thing.

Kayo’s been here a week and a half, and I came home yesterday to find a Rural planning business card stuck in my door. No note, nothing. just a business card. Immediately I flipped out, because I knew it’s about the horse.

I work all day, I am terrified to call, but my dad said I had to call and see what they want (I can pray it’s not about the horse, but it’s SO doubtful   )

In a horrible twist, I also gave my 30 days notice to the barn I have my pony since I was going to bring her here to save costs. I gave notice July 1, and found the card July 2. I immediately contacted the barn owner and said I had to retract my notice immediately until I figured this out. She said that was not possible so now I am looking at not having homes for my 2 horses.

I will be calling another boarding stable this morning and praying, praying they have stall for Misty….

but for Kayo…I’ll have to see what happens now I’m so scared…I slept maybe 4 hours last night, I was so scared…

Please send me your thoughts and best luck, that it wasn’t about the horse at all,though that’s doubtful

That is scary, but it’s probably worse not knowing. You might just call and leave a simple message saying you found this card with no note, did you leave it and would you please leave a message on my voicemail today while I’m at work?

Now, figure out if you would have paid $600 to continue to board the horse, and how long would that have bought you. I suspect that it adds up to only one or two more months, and if you look at it that way it is well worth paying it to keep the horses at home.

Then try not to think about it and focus on a cute bunneh nose instead. Like a mantra. It’ll be fine, LL.

I hope everything works out for you and your horses. Good luck when you call. Give a white bunny tail a little tug for good luck (my superstition). Do you have a white bunny? I can FedEx Bindi up to Freddy for you, lol. Seriously, though try to chill, things will work out, that’s just how life is.

i agree… it’s probably way worse not knowing.  i do that to myself all the time because i’m scared to face the music and most of the time it’s not even what i had suspected.  in this case the drop by could have been a follow up, but even if it is the worst case scenario there will be ways to resolve it.  call them & let us know what’s up.  (((((((((sending out lots of peace vibes)))))))))

oh no. please call them today… i hate not knowing what’s going on, and if you wait you will just continue to freak out when it could be something easily fixed. as far as Misty… is that the barn you were having problems with? i find it hard to believe that one day after the fact she would not allow you back… maybe you’re better off going somewhere else anyway…

Well, Misty has a barn to go to…thank goodness. I called another cheaper boarding stable and they had an opening so I just said, I’ll take it. So Misty has somewhere to go….
Hopefully they have more than 1 stall if it turns out Kayo can’t stay.

But I will do whatever it takes to keep him here. I can’t describe how wonderufl it is to have him here.

Hi all

I called…put on my “I’m stupid” persona and talked to the guy. He said I’m on an undersized lot (frig, it’s .99 acres for god’s sakes) but that it can be reformulated (or something)…and that someone had complained (probably my stupid old neighbours on the left side) – like, there’s horses right next to them, 5 of them in fact, what are they doing complaining about 1??? (@*#( that makes me really pissed off.
Anyway, he said the next ‘meeting’ isn’t until August or something, and that neighbours within 500 metres would be contacted to come and argue (which sinks my heart).

For right now he’s staying, the guy on the phone was understanding about how hard it is to find boarding, but I’m just sick to my stomach right now. I want to march over and scream at the neighbours.

Yes, the neighbours with horses will come and defend me, (even though they are moving at the end of the month, but it’s likely both they and the new owners – who they know- would) and I can talk to the people on the other side of me, as well as any other neighbour within 1500 metres.
My neighbour with the horses told me that the people next door are planning to move anyway, which pisses me off more, because if you’re moving – why do this to me?

I don’t know if this is worth it. I cannot explain the feeling of having Kayo here with me, but my anxiety issues are magnifying this enormously. My parents are not being supportive and I just feel lost and immature when it comes to this.

Some people!! Why would you complain, when clearly horses are out there anyways and your MOVING?!?!?

Don’t know if you can, but this might be funny. Bake a cake, or cookies and take it over to the neighbors who complained, and act like you’re just making friends “haven’t met you yet” and go in and chat (of course bring up the complaint it you can) but just be so nice that they squirm!!!

it is worth it. if you can fight this and win… this will be a huge load off your shoulders. if you can’t, you’ll have to go back to boarding anyways. you might as well see it to the end. if some people are willing to back you up… even if you can get approval on a probational basis… and they will see that your horse is well taken care of and not disruptive. you don’t need your parents to do this. you’re a homeowner now and these kinds of things will always be coming up. it comes with the territory.

i agree… it’s totally worth fighting for!  minimize your stress about it by focusing on what beka said.  the worst case scenario is that you have to find boarding later than sooner.  and i’m sure if that happened authorities would be reasonable about giving you time to get a barn lined up.

i think the way to ‘play’ this is to down-play it.  with the support of your neighbors who already have horses you can assure everybody that the set-up will not pose any inconveniances.  there may be concern that you’d start out keeping horses for your own hobby but then transition to boarding or breeding so also explain that you’re a student with a certain career path and that the horses are your ‘pets’. 

k&k’s idea to bring them a neighborly gift of baked goods is a great one.  they may be taken aback but regardless of their reaction, if you hold fast & stay friendly it will only look good on you.  i would be upfront & address the situation saying (or if they’re not home leave a note attached to the gift saying) “i wanted to introduce myself & say hello.  as you know i have recently moved in the neigborhood & have the horse(s).”  explain that they’re your pets and then ask “do you have any concerns with this?”   if you can do this with all the nearby neighbors you can find out what concerns they have before the meeting and be prepared for them ahead of time. 

don’t stress about it L_L… if the people objecting to your horses have valid concerns you can discuss / address them at the meeting (if not before hand).  if they’re just objecting because they have nothing better to do than to try to cause problems for others (unfortunately there are bitter people like this in the world) then it will be obvious in the meeting.  especially if you have taken the time to try to find out about their issues and are coming across reasonable & responsible.

Some people just aren’t themselves if they don’t have something to be angry about and to complain about. Unfortunately, it sounds like you have one of those neighbors. I’m sorry you’re going through this but karma has a way of working for the people who need it.

Keep in mind that you don’t know FOR SURE who filed the complaint.  Would your neighbor that can have horses board Kayo?

Well, just keep in mind that you knew this could happen. I certainly wish that it hadn’t, however now it is said and done, pointing fingers isn’t going to help and heck you don’t know if it was a realtor that called about it either that is trying to sell that house next door, OR if the “complaint” thing was a result of you withdrawing the application (red flag for them to come check things out). If you can, obtain records from your assessor of when your house was built, had a barn & horses and when the other houses were built i.e. were they built around your house? Was your parcel originally larger and a historic use is a horse pasture (can they grandfather you in)? Get your ducks in a row and get ready for the “meeting” remember to keep your cool and see if you can bring a friend along with you for moral support as well.
