PLEASE HELP RIGHT AWAY! Cut my rabbit with scissors

I feel awful, I was cutting Ivory’s Matt out when I snipping of a peice of her skin! She doesn’t seem to be in any pain and cleaned I best I could with a cotton ball and warm water then applied a little neosporin and kind of places a bandage on it but it was her lower back/bum area so it was quite hard. She seems fine but that tells me nothing. She acting like she always does after a grooming session, and she’s eating right now. I’ll try and get a picture up but it is quite hard.

She is laying down right now so can’t get a picture, I just looked it up and what I was doing was holding the Matt up ( Now I know I should never do that poor ivory) and snipped some of the skin.
I feel absolutely horrible for Ivory

Oh no! I know you feel bad – but please try to forgive yourself as it was an accident.

I’m assuming its not bleeding anymore? Was it plain neosporin? I know some are ok in case the bunny accidentally licks it and others are not (I’m hoping others will chime in here) and I don’t know if a bandage is a good idea if the sticky part is stuck to the fur?… unless you mean another kind of bandage?

Eating and acting normal are good!

Awh. As long as it was a small cut it should be fine, and I recommend not using a bandaid as it might irritate her and make her chew it off and cause tummy issues and make sure it is the plain neosporing with no pain meds in it as nutmeg said. but since it is on the butt area it is prone to infection as it’s near where the sit in their pee and poop, so If it’s a big one I suggest going to a vet and having them look at it so it doesn’t eat infected. But if it’s small she should be fine. If you have any extra pain meds from other vet visits for her you can always give her some if she seems in pain.

Thank you so much, this means so much to me No it’s not bleeding and yes there was nothing added as heard that if there was it can be harmful? Okay great, I took off the bandage as it didn’t do much anyway.

Thank you so, so much for the quick reply. Yes the bandage is now off. Yeah I heard if it wasn’t plain to not use it. It’s covered by a big clump of her fur so it’s hard to reach, I don’t know if that will help at all but thought I would mention it…

It’s not TOO TOO close to the butt area more lower back, I’ll try and get a picture asap. How big would be needed to be check by a vet? It”s not deep and not bleeding. Luckily she has never had any reason to visit the vet besides check ups-also will be soon spayed-so no pain meds.

Follow up Question: how often should I clean it and apply Neosporing?

Is it where she is molting? I would say since it isn’t deep, she should be okay and I say anything less than 1/2 and in or an inch is okay. And I don’t know how often the tub says, but just monitor it and maybe every 4-8 hours reapply, but not too heavy of a layer because you still want it to be able to air out.

I’ve nipped a bun’s skin before too, and felt just awful about it. Sounds like she will be fine, though. I suggest you check the area daily, for a while, however, as bunnies are prone to abscesses.

In the future (as I learned) scissors are a big no-no with buns. For mats, I suggest a small pocket trimmer you can buy at Walmart (in the dog section) for about $10.00. Great for small mats and totally safe.

Am facing the same problem, while cutting my rabbit nails I don’t know how I  mistakenly cut my pet rabbit  finger, though the bleedings is from the nail I cut off and not her skin, I just don’t know what to do so I just tied a piece of cloth on that leg  tight so she won’t infect it mistakenly

Sorry Jennym,  we’ve only just found your post. It was filtered as spam for some reason.

How is your rabbit now? I hope she is doing okay. I know it can look like an awful lot of blood with these mishaps. Perhaps the nail tore off and it’s just a nub there? This happened to me one time when my rabbit pulled his foot away just as I was cutting the nail.
