Please Help… Rabbit Going Blind?

 I recently rescued a second rabbit. I got her at about 7 weeks, she was the runt of the liter. “Fiver” is a holland lop, she has one blue eye, one blue/brown eye and is white with brown spots. I am confident she has a very healthy diet. It’s a diet that I got from a very knowledgeable founder of a pet rescue and a exotic pet vet. She had a regular routine check-up and passed, although I still have to get her fecal checked (which I will do this week).  Lately, I have noticed some strange behavior, such as running in circles, running into things, sniffing things out – instead of seeing something in front of her, etc. I have also noticed her perception when she jumps off of things is very off. 

I have never had a baby bunny as young as her, I usually get them when they are a older. So I dont know if this is typical baby bunny clumsy behavior or not. 

Any comments are appreciated.

I’d get her checked out by a vet, soon. It doesn’t sound like normal clumsy baby bunny behavior to me at all

Bunny vision normally isn’t very good, plus they have a blind spot right in front of them, so in order to see something they have to look at it sideways. Running in circles and running into things can be normal, if she’s doing it while she’s playing and exercising… but if she’s hopping calmly and crashes into a wall, that would be something to be concerned about. Even if she is blind or has limited vision, she can still live a long and happy life.

I think a vet would be able to tell with an examination.
If you get a chance, maybe you could video her and post it when she’s acting this way. I know baby bunnies can be pretty spazzy sometimes.

I agree-vet is a good idea. Also they cannot see directly in front of their nose and depth perception isn’t what ours is -however they can see right behind them. And the running around etc-sounds pretty normal.

I had a blind rabbit and now I have one who is half blind-or getting there and those aren’t behaviors either exhibited. The behaviors they exhibited were/are not getting food directly into their mouth on first try-so I hold a raisin and there is a bump-adjust position-bump-adjust position of the mouth before they get the raisin in their mouth. My blind bunny was also cautious using his head to feel around, and didn’t run around with abandon. My bunny who is going blind is the same-cautious about moving around.

So if your concerned-and you are seeing it not having it described so you are better to judge if there is something to be conerned about-by all means see a vet Also you could do a little peace of mind test. One is to shine a light on the eye after it’s adjusted to the dark and look for a pupil response (Basically the pupil should shrink quickly in the light) and another is to pretend you are going to hit the bunny (Don’t obviously) and look for a flinch. (make sure you don’t touch whiskers-that will give you a flinch even if they cannot see)

Sounds like a possible eye issue or neurological problem- I agree that getting her into the vet as soon as you can would be best.
