        Hello guys,

I was petting my bunny and just noticed she has a round wound that smells bad. When I inspected it closer I saw some little black bugs walking, I made a quick search on the internet and it looks like fur mites but I have no idea.

Last week it was really hot and I didn’t clean the cage for 2 days so on the 3rd day there was at least 3 flies around her bathroom that I didn’t notice before

I will attach a pic of her head/end of the ear so you guys can see.

I have no way to go to the Vet now, vet only has availability next Monday… I washed her head with warm water used betadine and put two drops of alchool on the wound I also cut all the fur around it and tried to remove those nasty insects. I don’t know if I did the right thing with the alcohol and betadine but I had nothing else in mind.

        Please help!!

        Thank you very much!

          Hi BunnyBunn

The wound doesn’t look too bad but if there is a smell, that is a bit concerning. That’s usually an indication of an infected wound. Have you checked inside her ears? Maybe the smell is coming from there?

You wouldn’t see fur mite, so its probably something else going on here. It may have been more fleas you saw near this. Has she been scratching at her ears more?
If so, I suggest just getting her seen by another vet clinic. Even a cat/dog vet should be able check over this wound and check for fleas. Just be certain you are not given (or don’t buy independently) Frontline or any other product containing Fipronil. That can be fatal for a rabbit.

I just looked closer at photo. It is quite a raised lump with this red sore at the top? Im wondering if some swelling at the base of her ear or even abscess. Some animals can have flea allergy too and get more inflammed areas on their skin.

              Hello,

              Thanks for your answers.

The inside of the ears are fine apparently I can’t precise where the smell is coming from but it smells like rotten and it seems to come from the wound but I also don’t want to smell it to close because I’m afraid that can be something contagious and I have a newborn son now…

There was definitely some black little bugs walking there, on the post above I said “fleas” but I meant flies sorry the autocomplete got me and I only noticed now. It was definitely not fleas I saw walking, at least not the normal type of flea.

Regarding to the ear, it does have a little lump with that redness at the top. The lump is very very small.

At the pet store/vet they recommended stronghold for cats but they won’t evaluate bunnies.

                Is stronghold for rabbits?

Try to find another vet to see her. A smelly wound is not a good thing. Could be an abscess. And your mention of flies makes me worried it could be a maggot under the skin. Both of these things need prompt vet treatment.
