Sophie was just playing around with newspaper and all of a sudden she started pulling her hair out. I am freaking out I’m scared she’ll harm herself there’s a lot of hair on the floor and in her mouth. I called the bunny hospital and the doctor told me it might be hormonal because she’s not spayed and she wants to nest but that she doesn’t know if she doesn’t see her and my husband has the car right now he’s working. I don’t know what to do

Dont worry Giuly, she won’t hurt herself. There could be 2 things going on. The first and most likely is that she is experiencing false pregnancy. if she puts her hair in one spot to make a nest, becomes territorial over her cage, etc, then it is definitely false pregnancy. The second option is that she’s shedding. A couple times a year, rabbits blow their entire coat out, so she may be just cleaning the dead hair off of her.

If there is no possible way she could be pregnant it sounds like she may be experiencing false pregnancy and your vet is correct that it is probably hormonal due to her being un-spayed. Before I had my Boogie-girl spayed she would do this on occasion. She would pull out so much fur she had bald spots and she would even pull fur out of her bonded buddy, Flopsy! She built a nest under my son’s desk in his room and would take the fur in there. She would drag everything she could get a hold of and take it in there. Magazines, shredded newspaper, her grass mat. It was so cute! Once she even was trying to pull her tunnel in there! Crazy rabbit!

My point is I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, just normal hormonal stuff that should stop when she is spayed, so try to relax. Take her to the vet if you are really worried but I think it’s just false pregnancy.

This is a normal hormonal thing. I wouldn’t worry too much. Once she is spayed it should not be a problem.

Sounds like you already have the appointment to have her spayed. Is that right?
If not, and a few weeks is the vet’s recommendation, I’d make a firm date for her.

                      K&K – LOL

Hi Giuly. Hopefully this will pass and it is a false pregnancy. BUT as bunnyluvr mentioned

If there is no possible way she could be pregnant

Could it have been possible? I read in your intro post you have only had her 3 weeks and she is around 6 months old. I really hope she is not actually about to deliver babies but feel I must alert you to the possibility in case she was impregnated before you got her. Once they start building a nest they can have the litter within 24 hrs. I HOPE this is not the case with Sophie. Keep us posted.

Edit to add: Oh, and this probably indicates more as to why she has been biting that you posted about.  Be it real or false pregnancy.

I hope Sophie is ok! Maybe it is just a false preg/hormones like everyone suggested. I am planning on getting Bella spayed too, but right now she is only 2 months old. Good luck with Sophie and keep us posted, ok?

Hey guys..now I’m worrying. I really don’t know if she might be pregnant, I don’t know who she was living with before I adopted her. I just went to her playpen, she smelled me, bit my ankle and got into a box with holes I made for her. How do I know if she’s pregnant? Do bunnies get fat when they are? I just took her to the vet last week. you think she didn’t notice?

I really didn’t want to scare you but thought I should have brought it up in case. It’s better to be prepared. I think it’s hard to tell when they’re pregnant so it is possible the vet missed it if not actually looking for it. There is some info in FAQ forum on surprise litters you might want to take a look at. If she really is nesting just leave her be and keep on baby watch. How many days have you had her now? 3 weeks plus 4/5 days?

Here’s House Rabbit Society info on litters also. Hopefully you won’t need it but if she delivers, you can have a read then.

It is not usually possible to tell a bun is pregnant. Even vets may not be able to tell a few days before. They don’t tend to gain a lot of weight in the mid-section, or such a tiny amount that it’s not noticeable. What day did you get her exactly? Count ahead 30 days. Gestation can be about 28-32 days… so that would tell you approximately when you’d be in the clear.
