PLEASE HELP ME!

Let me just get this out of the way – I already called the emergency hotline for our vet! She gave me the number of another animal hospital telling me she didn’t know enough about rabbits, and the place I called said it was 550$ for an emergency vet visit. I’m a broke college student who can barely pay rent and I’m freaking the $*&! out! Someone please give me some idea of what happened to my bunny!

 He was COMPLETELY fine this morning, running around like he usually does. He’s the adventurous one who is only a couple years old, and loves eating and drinking more than our other rabbits. My boyfriend woke me up out of bed telling me our rabbit wasn’t right, and I walked in to see him leaning against the side of his cage all limp. We took him out of his cage and he wouldn’t stand on his own, he wouldn’t eat anything, wouldn’t move at all, and hadn’t gone to the bathroom since we’d picked him up and put him out of his cage ( which is unusual for him).

I let him lay on me for a couple hours just petting him, and we managed to get some water in his system. Eventually after laying on me for a while, he slowly started hopping around the bed. After he started chinning a box and biting it, I put him back in his room, where he started eating his food and drinking. He’s hopping around a little more now, and we’re regularly checking on him. The vet I talked to said she didn’t know much, but you could give the rabbit baby aspirin or tylenol to help with the pain.

Someone please tell me what to do or any advice. I’m worried about my baby, he was the first bunny we ever owned and has always been our baby. I don’t want him to die :'(

Maybe he has an injury or in pain? I don’t think limping is life-threatening though, although it might be a bone fracture or something like that. You could give him pain-relief but it’s best to get a vet to check up on him.

I would NOT give him aspirin.

Are you able to get him to the vet today during regular hours? I’m not sure what it could be. Possibly an injury or something neurological. Please keep us updated.

You need to get him to your regular vet – no vet can diagnose over the phone – they must see your rabbit in person. Unfortunately vet bills come with having a rabbit but seeing the regular vet should not cost as much. If she cannot see him ask about dropping him off for the vet to see between appointments.

Hi guys! I set up a vet appointment anyway, but Nibbler is acting completely normal now. He’s eating, drinking, pooping and peeing, and jumping around and doing binkies. Has a bunny ever done that before? Acted like he was sick or in pain and then just made a complete recovery?

Well it’s hard to know if it is a complete recovery or if it could happen again especially if it was some kind of seizure. Glad you got an appt. and hopefully the vet may have some insight.

I was going to suggest something neurological like a seizure too. It is best to have him checked out by a vet. If he is acting normally now, then it is okay to wait for an appointment.

This same thing happened to my bunny yesterday. She stopped eating, pooping, playing and just sat in a corner hunched up. After getting advice on BB to give her tummy massages and simethicone (infant gas drops), 1 or 2 hours later she suddenly perked up again and was back to normal. Took her to the vet anyway and they did not find anything wrong with her. It was really strange that this happened, I suspect it was some sort of upset tummy/gas issue.

I think it’s important to have him seen by your vet during daytime office hours (the least expensive) as soon as possible – today hopefully. You definitely don’t want a re-occurrence over the weekend. If he’s fine, that’s great, and it won’t cost much. But if there is anything to be detected, and that could be anything from a partial blockage to a source of pain, you want to be prepared with a prescription, some medication or appropriate pain med for bunnies (like metacam) or just instructions on what to give him to eat and drink to relieve a digestive problem. Even being told to feed Critical Care for a couple of days will make a really big difference to him and prevent him having an emergency. I”M not telling you to use that, I just mean that’s an example of one thing your vet may suggest.

Once I had an issue with Sammy for a day, and she was given some meds I injected by mouth, and had Critical Care. I then watched for poopies. She was fine, but the next time she showed similar signs, I called the vet and she had me use the med I already had in my fridge from the first time, telling me to use it and call her back later. By having it in the house already, my bunny got the right treatment and she didn’t need to go in for a second visit. It’s kind of like stocking up your first aide kit for the first time. Please, see the vet.
