Hi there, I just came across this website whilst panic searching for different reasons why my rabbit isn’t feeling that well. It’s pretty obvious that hes uncomfortable to say the least, and I really don’t know what to do. I thought it was gas at first because I heard noises from his tummy, and when I looked it up, I was still pretty sure it was gas, but I’m still really scared. He’s about 11 months old and I haven’t had him for long, he’s also my first rabbit, I’ve only ever had cats before so I have honestly no idea what to do right now.

I’ve seen loads of videos of rabbit owners talking about Stasis and stuff and I wasn’t too worried about it (which was dumb now that I think about it). But he’s been shivering for a while and his ears aren’t that cold, but they aren’t warm either. My bedroom is quite cold but normally he doesn’t shiver. He’s also been laying down and then getting up and then laying down again like he can’t get comfortable, and his tummy isn’t really making any more noises, but he he keeps sitting down or squatting like he’s about to pee and then he just sits down again, I have seen him go to the bathroom for the last maybe 2 or 3 hours and he had a little bit of water a little while ago but he isn’t eating anything. I saw that I can give him baby medicine but I don’t have any of that and all the shops in my area are closed because it’s 1 am. I’m gonna be staying awake with him the whole night, I just want him to be ok. I’ve been trying to warm him up but he doesn’t want to be cuddled or touched or anything at the moment. I tried to give him a treat but he didn’t even try and smell it. He isn’t grinding his teeth so I’m pretty sure he isn’t in alot of pain. He’s loafed at the moment but if anyone has any tips or tricks please help me, it would be greatly appreciated

I saw him drinking water a few minutes ago, hes also come to sit closer to me where I can touch him. His ears are cold but I can’t really feel him shivering. He’s still rearranging himself alot though.

Do you not have a 24-hr pharmacy? What you are describing does sound like gas. An episode of gas can lead to stasis if the pain/discomfort lasts too long and they don’t eat. When you say he is squatting, do you mean he looks like he is (unsuccessfully) try to do a push up? A lot of times people describe it as a similar motion to a person who can’t do a push-up trying to do a push-up (i.e. their belly dips down toward the floor as they try to push upward with their arms).

Gas can be managed at home with simethicone gas drops, hydration, keeping warm, belly massages, etc. You can also try coaxing the gas out by gently lifting his rear. If you don’t see improvement within a few hours, then you should get your bunny to a vet asap because something else could be wrong or they could be going into full blown stasis.

He’s still shivering and his eyes are basically closed at the moment, I’m trying to keep his ears warm and the rest of him but he still doesn’t want to cuddle… I don’t have a 24/7 pharmacy near here and I can’t drive yet to go there, my dad is asleep but I will try to do more massages and lifting him, I’ll try get him to drink more water aswell

When he was doing that peeing sit thing, he kinda just kept his feet in place and reversed his butt back with his tail up, and he only stayed like that for a few seconds and then he loafed. I tried to do some more massages which he didn’t love but it warmed him up alot so he isn’t shivering but he’s still quite cold and he’s breathing pretty quickly aswell

Can you try giving him a hot water bottle to lay next to? That way he can warm up without being held and he can move away if he feels too warm.

I put my hand over his ears which he didn’t seem to mind for a while but he isn’t as cold and he’s been drinking water in little sips but consistently. He isn’t eating yet but he’s shifting around s little less. His breathing is still pretty rapid but it’s a little more calm than before. He has been grooming his chest after drinking water everytime which he didn’t do at first I think. It does seem a little better, and the vet will be open in a few hours so I’m definitely going to be taking him as soon as I can. But he seems a little bit better, thank you for your help

I managed to find a hot water bottle and I lay it next to him but he didn’t seem to move much, he’s not shivering at all but he’s gone to sit under my bed rather than next to me, so I’ve just put his water next to him and the hot water bottle. He seems tired and he’s not moving around too much and hasn’t been for a while, but he’s just gotten up to sit under the bed so I’m gonna let him sit for a while and I’ll just keep an eye on him. The vet opens in 2 hours so hopefully we’ll be ok until then. He’s still drinking water, taking sips every so often so I’m glad about that

Hi, so we’ve been to the vet and he had an x-ray done. He just had a bit of gas and some blockage which they’re putting him on meds for. He’s also being syringe fed and they said it would be best to keep him for the night. So he’s all ok, he’s at the vet and I’m going to go fetch him tomorrow morning. But thank you for everyone who read this, and thank you for your input, I was so worried about him but he’s all ok now. The vet said he’s not eating by himself yet but he’s doing ok, I’m so relieved 😅

I’m glad you took him in! Fingers crossed he’ll be back to his true self tomorrow! Gas can be very painful for a rabbit, and they are as a species very sensitive to pain.

                            Thank you for the update!

Hiiii, I just got home from fetching him from the vet, he’s a lot more chirpy and he just had a poop, it’s a little softer than his normal poop but he is pooping which is the main thing. The vet said he isn’t really eating any pellets and he had a little bit of fresh hay while earlier today which was good. But I’ve just finished setting him up in my room and he’s eating his hay and some fresh greens that I got from outside, he’s also grooming and moving around the room now, no binkies yet but I’m glad he’s moving, he’s doing so much better. I have some medicine for him and some food from the vet that has to be fed to him by syringe which I will be doing just now and I need to give him that until he starts eating pellets by himself. But he should be back to normal in a few days, he’s got a check up on Saturday and hopefully he should be right as rain by then. Thank you so much for the support, I was so stressed out about this and having someone to talk to who knows what they’re talking about has been a relief, thank you so much😊

So glad to hear he is better! The vet probably gave you Critical Care or similar recovery food.

Hi everyone, we’ve finished up all his medicine and he’s muhh happier, he’s eating his pellets and alot of lettuce. We’ve got binkies and zoomies and he’s just doing so much better. I thought I should just finish up on here but I will definitely come back if I’ve got any questions or anything, but he’s all better so here’s hoping nothings going wrong in the future😊♥️
