I was just about to pack little Bean up to take him to my parents house to stay for 4 days, as I am going on vacation. However, right as I was about to put him in the car, I noticed his urine is orange. He had many dried carrot treats today (I found him this morning in the treat bag eating them; he has never had these treats before, and doesn’t get more than 1-2 of his usual treats per day). There are no 24 hour vets near me, and it’s nearly 12am. I was freaking out until I compared the color of the treats to his urine. Could the treats be the cause? He is eating, pooping, acting, and drinking normally.

Treats could VERY possibly be the cause. Food can make drastic changes in the color of rabbit urine. Even certain types of darker leafy greens will sometimes turn a rabbit’s urine slightly orange. If Bean is acting otherwise normal I’d say not to worry too much about it right now. (Keep in mind I am not a professional and I have never seen rabbit urine with blood present so I can not say for sure that this has no blood.)

My advice is for now, just lay off any treats that could cause discoloration and make sure he is drinking plenty of water. Have your parents keep a close eye on his urine while you’re gone, and if the color persists without him eating any treats THEN you should have him taken to a vet as soon as possible.

Don’t freak out, good bunny parent!

Bean’s pee is perfectly normal, especially in light of his having eaten dried carrots (beta carotene in them will color Bean’s pee).

Bunny pee, especially when dried and oxidized, can be very dark, and orange or red or brown, depending on the bun’s recent diet.

Enjoy your vaycays you two. Bean is adorabun.

Yes, completely normal pee after carrot-intake! You can get the same result after your bun has had dandelion greens, a bit more surprising since they don’t look orange. But they have lots of beta carotene in them, and that shows up in the pee.
