SO yes this is the second day of my bunnies outdoor home. its very warm and nice. yesterday, i noticed a bump on her nose and told my mom. she said it was probably a mosquitoe bite, and told me to wait, because it would get smaller. today i decided to look at her nose. it has grown in size and takes up a big portion of her face. she was actualy letting me touch her mouth, which worries me. i feel like the worst bunny mother ever. EXCEPT this time im not going to let this one go. my dad said he will take her to the vet. i wont let him say no this time. he is trying to convince me it is probably a bee sting, but i dont think it is. and even if it is, it needs vet help. the most i can do is to get my dad to take her tomorrow. its better than nothing. what can i do in the mean time to make sure she is okay? i noticed she is laying down alot, whic she does but since she is in a new cage i expected her to wonder. should i be worried?? please what do i do??
i do think that i need to treat my bun with more respect, but i dont want to surrender her because im trying. she is going to the vet
im sorry. i feel like im letting my bunny down. i am glad i got my dad to say yes to the vets though. here are the pics.

sorry bout the title. i dont no why that img thing was added
Since I am not a vet, I cannot give you any kind of diagnosis, but I can say if this were my bunny I would already be at the emergency vet. I am unfortunately are not able to help you any further than saying that this is definitely an emergency, as well as one of the many reasons your bunny should not be housed outdoors. This is dangerous because you can’t tell the extent of the swelling, or the cause of it, as well as if your bunny is suffering any other allergic symptoms that you can’t see. It is not a good idea to let things like this go to the point of swelling.
i no but you dont understand. it takes forever to get my bun to the vets though my parents. im super lucky i can get here there tomorrow. and my dad is trying to make the rabbits house safer everyday.
Oye, that looks like a nasty bump! When did you notice this at this size? This really should have been seen by a vet today! I honestly don’t mean to be mean, but I just don’t understand why this kind of thing isn’t taken more seriously. So far, you have been really lucky how things have turned out over the last few months with the different problems and issues that have come up, but I don’t know how many more chances you are going to get before something really terrible happens. The thing is with rabbits, is infections, bumps or even a bee sting (especially on the face) can set in and turn into an abscesses. And stress and pain can affect a bunnies digestive system so it is always smart to act quickly. I know a huge part of the problem is that you are at the mercy of your parents decision. It’s too bad that your folks will not act faster on this. Do you have any emergency vets on hand?
You also said it was warm – how warm?
Is your bunny eating? Pooping? How is she breathing? If she won’t eat, and hasn’t pooped, and/or is breathing heavy or labored, please take her to a vet ASAP.
I also recommend that you bring your parents to this board and have them learn along with you. You can ask questions together. Would they be interested in coming here?
i no i feel like crying right now. my parents are stuburn and are getting mad at me for asking to take them. i noticed it like 30 min ago, and i posted right after. the house is normal warm not to awrm and not to cold. like my house. i have been checking on her. im worried since it is on the nose. i tried looking for a stinger, but cannot find it. so im scared. you guys honestly dont no how mad i am that my parents dont understand. i was gonna call a vet for help but wasnt allowed. im gonna break down. i honestly would give myself heck if i were another person but right now i need help. i dont want my bun to get real sick and in the mean time, suffer. i honestly am trying, but my parenst are stopping me. i really am trying to be the best i can. its always somthing new for my bun.
I’m sorry panic you are in this situation. I was asking because it’s later in the evening, and I was wondering if they were indoors if you would have noticed the swelling earlier? Just another reason to keep them indoors.
Can you bring your parents here to the board and read our responses?
The thing is, you are asking us to help you fix something that only a vet will be able to help you with. We can’t prevent your bunny from getting sicker, especially if this is an abscess. Only a vet can, that is why both moobunnay and I are saying our bunnies would have already a been at the vets.
Maybe what you need to do is read to your folks what our responses are in regards to making sure your bunny goes to a vet.
IS your bunny eating? Pooping? What is your bunny doing right now?
OKAY i just checked. i fed her and she ate, i cleaned her house shes breathing good, i put ant traps around her house (not liek that would help) and im gonna buy one of the fake bees nest, to keep bees away.
she is sitting in the door way, watching the rain. im sorry i was just trying to see if there was somthing i could do like put somthing on it to stop the swelling or keep it from getting infected while i waited for tom.
Be sure that they can’t get to the ant traps themselves. Let us know what the vet says tomorrow.
Make sure she has enough hay and water…and by ‘enough’ of course I mean ‘excessive’. ![]()
have you been able to get the bunny into the vet? if not, please go ASAP. don’t wait until 5 or 6 o’clock tonight when everything is closing down. let us know what happens, please.
good luck at the vets. let us know how it goes. and with regards to outdoor homes etc, i’ve had my buns both indoors and out, and they prefer out (there are of course, as many dangers inside as out as my mum’s tv wires can give testament to!). it looks like you give your bun a lot of love, and play with her as often as possible, so don’t be so hard on yourself. the only people who i hate having rabbits are those that buy a one level hutch, stick them in and then never let them out again. that is criminal, but you seem to be doing a very good job as a bunny mummy, though you might want to look at getting a number for a vet who comes out in future in case your parents can’t take you? it is hard to understand as in the UK, there is a vet within a mile of everywhere it seems! perhaps you are somewhere where vets are far away (the USA is massive after all!). I think you should always know you can get to a vet asap if you need to. Buns can have some nasty and painful problems in their life times and you want to act always as quickly as possible.
Anyhoo, really masses of luck, and let’s hope it was just a little sting. My rabbit had one like this though it was a little smaller, and he seemed fine after a few days. Fingers crossed for you x
hey people! thanks for ur concerns. yes i have a big pile (big big pile) of hay for them, and give them fresh water every day. so thismorning i noticed it a little bigger and told my parents. the vet said it could possibly be a bee sting, or an abscesses, which he will have to drain if it is. we got liquid benadrill for babs and he said it should stop the swelling. he said if that doesnt help, we will have to bring her back for draining.
he could not tell if it was an abscess or a bee sting? make sure to keep a close eye on her. i’m saying check her at least every couple hours. if you notice it getting worse, take her back to the vet right away, or to an emergency vet if it’s after hours.
wouldn’t bun be in severe pain if that huge lump was an abcess? i’ve had an abcessd toothe before & it was incredibly painful! did the vet not give any pain meds? i’m not a vet either but i’d be VERY sure to ask the vet if bun could be in any pain & demand pain meds if there was any chance.
panic, i know you love your bun but if your parents will not let you properly look after her (reluctant vet attention & outdoor housing…) then maybe they should not have let you get a pet to begin with. i’m sorry to be so blunt. really. i do know how attached to pets we all are here. but some times to be good pet owners we have to put our owns wants aside to give the best care to our animals and some times that means admitting you cannot take care of your pet in the best way. please please consider this. your poor bun deserves to be inside a loving home & taken good care of.
I am so happy to hear that your father took your bunny to the vet. It may seem like I have not been understanding, but I know all to well how rabbits can take a turn for the worse very quickly (as my own bunny, Rucy, is at the emergency vets right now – i’ll post about that soon)
It does concern me also though that the vet can’t tell whether or not this is a bee sting or abcesses. Abscesses can be fast growing too. But let’s just hope this will all turn out okay. And, I double ditto, keep a close eye, and get your vets referral for an after-hours vet just in case.
Keep us updated.
hey everybody. yes the sweilling has stopped. the vet said it was brobably an abscesses but wanted to see if there was a less painful way of helping it, like first checking ti see if benadryl would help. (if it is a bee sting)
i honestly am doing what i can for my bunny. actualy, their outside house is WAY better than the indoor house. it is much bigger, and has more things too keep them occupied. i am checking her every so often. she is acting normal, eating, and all that.
Panic do you have a roof on the outside run yet? It was uncovered in the pictures…
no but i am working on it. we actualy have been working on the rabbit house. all we need to do now is just add the roof. my dad was just trying to plan things out like how we would get in to feed (like were the door should be and what to make it out of) and so today we are building it.
Poor little bunny…
