My 8 months old male bunny has suffering from last night,  it didn’t go down even after visiting vet last night,  today morning we again went to vet, they gave shots and observed for half an hour.  The temperatures went down , but he is not at all eating any thing, unable to syringe feed as he seems not at all interested & not allowing the syringe. He is continously twitching his nose from last night and now he is unable to even sit or stand,  he just keeps dragging his hind legs.  I don’t want what to do now , please help.

Vet checked his teeth too, but these symptoms like not eating , wet chin,  continously licking his feet are due to dental issues,  but we don’t have rabbit savvy vets here . And the vet we visited told his teeth are fine .

I would ask the vet for fenbendazole and metacam, in case this is e cuniculi. Fenbendazole acts on the e cuniculi parasite itself, and metacam is an anti inflammatory (NSAID) that can help bring down the inflammation the ec is causing. Baytril, a broad spectrum antibiotics, has also been shown to have some beneficial effects in e cuniculi cases.

He must eat even if he doesnt want to, or he can’t survive.

Dragging the hind end is typical of ec, especially since he’s presented with this symptom before. The other major cause of hind end weakness and inability to stand would be trauma to the spine, but if that were the case  the weakness would not have gone away to present again weeks later.

You need to get food in him and keep him warm to prevent him from going into chock. A low temp is a warning sign that the bun is going into chock. You can give him a bottle filled with warm water and wrapped in a towl, but he needs to be able to move away from the heat source if he wants to.

          Treatment needs to start ASAP.

I agree with Bam. The symptoms with the back legs “screams” EC. Many vets will treat on suspicion, especially if the symptoms are severe.

We immediately rushed to the vet when we heard he is grinding his teeth , we tried many ways to feed him , but he didn’t take anything.  He breathed his last at the vet , it was our 3rd visit to vet yesterday. From my first visit I’m continuously begging them to do something as he hasn’t eaten from last 10 hours , they simply said it coz of fever,  he will eat once he feels okay. I curse my self for not being able to save him , we don’t have rabbit savvy vets here . I’m experiencing this heart break for third time in last 7 months .

                I am so very sorry.

Don’t blame yourself. He was very ill. You got him vet care right when he first presented with hind end weakness, and you followed the advice your vet gave you. It is very difficult when you don’t have a rabbit savvy vet, but even with the best vet care,  not all rabbits can be saved.

It is very sad that you lost two rabbits in such a short time.

I’m very sorry. As Bam mentioned, you acted quickly and followed the recommendations given. Not all rabbits can be saved, and it can be difficult not to feel guilt when you’re there to see it happen. You clearly cared so much for your rabbits, and now they are binky-ing freely elsewhere.

I’m unable to find out the reason, we fed him critical care before taking to vet as we know he will be stressed and won’t eat for sometime after coming from clinic. He had fever & we got shots for it , that’s it   after coming home he didn’t eat anything , whole night he was roaming around the room,  we tried many ways to feed him but no use,  the temperature didn’t come down at all , so we visited vet again in the morning . I clearly told them he didn’t eat from last night , they ignored it & again gave antibiotics.

He was very scared & screamed in pain,  at that very moment my heart broke into million pieces . We were with him without leaving even for a second ,from then his condition worsened , unable to sit , stand. When we laid him down he was crawling   , not able to stand . I took him in my lap praying he should become okay , but he left me . I just watched him suffering , I still don’t know what happened to him.

I’m very sorry for your loss. 🙁 It sounds like something very serious was wrong, so please don’t beat yourself up.

It was not your fault, and just remember, he is happy now, and he will watch over you and he doesn’t want you to to be guilty and mean to yourself, and he doesn’t want to see you so upset.

I do understand that this was very traumatic for, especially since you lost your girl rabbit so recently. The only “good” thing to be said about a situation like this is that you were there with him. It was horrific for you, but you stuck it out and didn’t leave his side. This must have been of comfort to him. He didn’t have to be alone or in the hands of strangers when he went.

You got him the best vet care available. You did that for your girl rabbit too. Its quite clear that you are a highly conscientious and loving rabbit owner.

If you like to, you could put together a small tribute to him or perhaps to both your lost buns, in our Rainbow Bridge section. You could write down some sweet memories and add a few pictures. There are many of us here who have lost rabbits and who will sympathise.
