My bunny lives in the garage. i love him sooo much, so i dont want this to sound like i’m “mistreating” him or anything . So, we have to bring a car into the garage to work on it, and I’m worried that it might stress him out to much. I could bring him into the house, but he really dislikes that and i think it also stresses him out. I don’t think we’ll have to run the car or anything, just putting some new doors on, etc. he really loves his house in the garage, and that is his safe place, and i feel like if we bring him in the house he’ll be freaked out. What do you guys think i should do?? would it be better for him to stay in the garage, or come in the house??

        Thanks

I think it really depends on what kind of personality your bunny has. Some have a higher tolerance for noises but some are scared at the slightest sound.

He could be stressed when he is inside the house because he normally lives in the garage and the house is unfamiliar territory for him. Apart from the noise, I’d also be concerned on the dust or any particles flying around in the garage as you work on the car, as I understand that car stuff can get quite dusty and dirty. Rabbits have sensitive respiratory systems so the bunny may have issues being in that sort of environment over a period of time.

            Why can’t bunny live inside?

The fumes and loud noises with car work is not safe for a rabbit. Bring him inside or find a new spot for the car.

Fumes would be the main worry, imo. Are you painting or using degreaser or other toxic chemicals? That would be a definite reason to bring him inside for the duration.

Noise can be scary for rabbits, but it rather depends on how much noise he’s used to and his general personality.

I think you should observe him. If he seemed scared (thumping would be a sign) he’s probably better off in the house. Definitely take him in if he goes into hiding and won’t come out for a yummy treat. Even if he hates it inside, he’s been there before, so it’s not a totally new environment for him.

Bunnies have sensitive respiratory systems so I agree with everyone who is wary of fumes… I think it would be better off to bring him inside and give him a treat or give him his veggies after you move him inside so there is something positive about it. Where do you normally let him out to run around and play? Maybe it would help to bring him to this spot that he is familiar with for playtime.

If he really doesn’t like being inside it’s probably because he’s not used to it- maybe bringing him in for some exercise more often and making it a positive place will make it less stressful when you need to bring him in- I would think you would need to bring him in occasionally for cold or hot weather, too.

Not to scare you (ok, well maybe to scare you a little bit) but when my mom was little, her 4H group had a rabbit as a group project and everyone took turns bringing the bunny home. They told her to put him in the garage over night and then in the morning my mom found him frozen. I don’t know if you leave him out all the time or not but I would be careful and mindful of the weather because bunnies are sensitive! In the wild they have deep fur lines burrows with other bunnies to snuggle with to keep them warm, and in the summer it’s cool underground.

Thanks for the help everybody, i’ll see what I can do and i’ll for sure try to bring him in.

Also, catsbunnies, there is nothing to worry about. The garage is fully heated, insulated and attached to the house. i also have a bird, and a cat living in the garage (they are always separate, of course!!!) it is the same temperature in the garage as it is in the house. Technically, it’s not really a “garage,” it is more an extra room to our house.
