…..but I’m getting a snake, a ball python on Nov. 30th *if all goes well*. I have been trying to decide if I should tell you guys because I don’t want the “IT’S GONNA EAT THE BUNNIES” type posts. No the snake is NOT going to eat the bunnies so don’t worry, I know this because 1. the snake is not going to get big enough to eat rabbits only rats and 2. the bunnies and snake will not be out at the same time I’m very excited to get the new addition. Not sure if it’s going to be a girl or boy snake (I’m going to a reptile expo the 30th *if all goes well* and pick the guy/girl out), their cage is already set up and I’m just counting down the days. I have a few names picked out, if it’s a girl I’m going to name her Lilith *from the City of Bones series because that character has snakes for eyes* and if it’s a boy I’m going to name him Smaug *from the Hobbit* Josh also might have names after we pick the snake out

Does anyone else here have a snake?

Ooh! We babysat my friend/boss’ snake for a few months, Jake the red corn snake. They’re good pets if they get used to handling otherwise they are real grumps that generally hide under their warm spots. So handle, handle, handle! Also, a good vivarium lock is crucial, even though the snakes can only eat rats (Jake was on mice) they can get lose in the smallest gaps and will get lost in your house, and buns can die of fright. So viv lock or duct tape, both work!

But apart from that – they’re lovely pets! Dont know about smaug though – technically that would make him a wyvern, not a dragon! ;p

I used to have my own snake many years ago. His name was Bazi, but my husband kept calling him Corny. o_O It’s because he was a little cornsnake. I absolutely adore snakes, but I’ve only worked with ratsnakes and bullsnakes. Unless you count the garter snakes I had to pull out of my mom’s window wells. Anyway, all the ones I have worked with have all been so sweet.

A ball python probably wouldn’t be able to eat a good sized bunny, but could certainly cause injury. So keeping them completely isolated from one another is a very good idea. Make sure the cage is very secure too. You don’t want it getting out! We had a snake get out at work. The lid was on, but she actually squeezed through. =\

My cousin’s snake was an escape artist, he kept getting out every week no matter how they secured his enclosure… those things are good at hiding and escaping lol like bunnies

And don’t worry, plenty of people have predators with bunnies. I’m sure you’ll be careful. Have fun with the new addition.

thanks guys, I know all about how they are escape artists the top of the cage is locked in by 4 sliding locks that secures the top *the only way the snake can get in or out* and I’ll make sure to lock them all the time *don’t want him to escape* I don’t think Caleb is scared of anything he’s a brave bunny, vacuum cleaners, sudden loud noises in other rooms he has NO reaction. Not scared of the dog or anything. Gamgee on the other hand is a scared-y bunny lol though he is also curious and usually gets over something with a quick investigation. Ball pythons just so you guys know are very sweet shy snakes that only get about 4-5 feet *sometimes 6 but not often* and are pretty much just chill out snakes

I noticed recently that furry animals have a LOT of work entailed with them including brushing, nail trimmings, food everyday *this is most animals lol*, cleaning their cage everyday anyway you get the idea but with snakes there’s no brushing, trimming, food every week or so, cleaning their cage only when needed (since they don’t eat everyday not a lot to clean up though I’ll still check everyday of course). I just never realized or cared *still really don’t care about the amount of care my furry animals need* how much work they are lol

As far as day to day stuff, snakes don’t require a whole lot. That doesn’t mean they aren’t high maintenance though. Boy, those supplies are crazy expensive. You have to keep them at an appropriate temperature, provide basking, etc. Some need high humidity too. And shedding can easily become an issue if they can’t get the old skin off.

Aw. I had a trinket rat snake (very similar to a corn snake, only brown) as a kid. He was lovely, but lived at my dad’s. Eventually I stopped visiting so much and my dad didn’t handle him much and he went from tame to grumpy.

Also, please, please check the humidity – my dad went away for 3 weeks (separated parents) and left our snake. He got this horrible skin thing where he couldn’t shed but wasn’t taken to the vets as my dad was worried he’d get in trouble, he improved very slightly but subsequently died. I was furious when I found out.

Snakes seem like cool pets, I couldn’t have one though. I can’t stand the idea of feeding rats/mice to anything. Though, I know, it’s recommended to feed frozen not live (since live can hurt the snake) so it’s not like you’re killing it. Still. I couldn’t do it.

Not having to brush or do nails sounds nice though. *looks at all the fur left around her house from the buns* Oh yeah, no fur is a bonus. haha

Snakes are very cool. I’ve always secretly kinda wanted one.
My favorite type of snake is the blue, green tree python. Although I don’t think I could ever feed a mouse/rat dead or alive, to a snake…

More power to you! I know some people love pet snakes, but the day a snake moves into my house is the day I move out! They’re ok from a very long distance I guess!

JR – I’m always amused by visitors that freak out because there are snakes in cages. Well, unless they start screaming curse words at the top of their lungs. Then we have to ask them to leave (it’s a family place).

Stickerbunny – Feeding snakes dead mice is nothing. No mess, no nothing. It’s all gone in one big gulp. Feeding mice to birds is not so neat and clean. o_O

if they were live mice/rats I couldn’t do it either, already dead mice/rats that I don’t have to personally kill no problems just the way of life. I’ll make a thread on here once I get him/her so you guys can look

JR— Well Falcons, Hawks, Eagles, ect. eat small mammals (like mice and rabbits), small birds, salmon. ect., so yes. Some birds eat mice.

Yep JR, the birds at work do and most like to take lots of little bites.
