hey all.  so had 2 beautiful bun girls Pearl and Pebble at 5w.  took them in at 3m to vet they also confirmed both girls. 6m later she is building a nest. again the breeder and the vet said it is just a false pregnancy although she seems young to be doing that. she was scheduled that week to get spayed both her and her sister.  Turns out that Pearl is a boy but no mention of Pebble being pregnant, they had done an ultrasound on her liver and the vet had told me that he checked just in case and did not feel or see any babies. next day I look in the box and there were 2 little black kits.  they are about 1 month old now but well she has built another nest and is pregnant again.  these guys are brother and sister what would that mean for any offspring?

what age should the babies be separated into girl/boy groups?  How do I do things responsibly?  breeder is of no hope unfortunately

I know a lot of questions but really not much on youtube except for outdoor breeders.  I am not a breeder just someone that would like to do right by these little guys.

Was there a reason they weren’t separated when you found out you had a boy and girl? They can get pregnant again immediately after giving birth. At this point, there isn’t much you can do. Mama will take care of the babies. They will need to be separated after they are weaned and before they are 12 weeks. Then you’ll have to decide if you want to keep all of them or find them new homes. If you do keep them, then you’ll need to have everyone spayed/neutered so you can try bonding them. If you decide to rehome them, then make sure to screen any potential adopters. Sometimes people are looking for free/cheap snake food.

As for the inbreeding… one generation probably won’t have any negative affects. The risk increases if the babies are having babies with each other though.

Thanks for the feedback.  As soon as I found out I separated them.  Pebble had 4 kits last night unfortunately 2 died.

I adopted a bunny awhile back (its been several years ago now) who came from the shelter pregnant – unbeknownst to anyone. It was quite a shock! That’s pretty crazy both breeder and vet missed their genders with your buns!

I would suggest watching some videos/read some tutorials on sexing bunnies. Now that you have some little ones (and don’t want to end up with a bunny army!) it will be helpful to know how to separate them.

That being said, when they’re little, it can be a bit tricky.

Also, the babies can get the mom pregnant when they reach a certain age, so definitely a good idea to separate them, as LBJ said. 🙂

I am sooo sooo sorry, I just noticed your post now.   I decided to keep all of them. 6 in total 3 girls and 3  boys.  2 the mom and daddy/Uncle have since been altered.  oopsie and Daizie are going next month and Echo and Shadow will be in April.  There will be no more buns in this house hold.  it’s a full time job looking after 6 bunnies each with personalities so different from each other.  About the Vet they did an ultrasound prior to spaying her as there seemed to be something wrong with her blood work.  he did not notice that she had or was pregnant.
