Seeing as I couldn’t find a thread set aside for introductions I’ll just post here.  If this is in the wrong place feel free to move it.

I’ve been hoping to find a rabbit lover community for some time now, and found this through Wikipedia.  I have a one year old albino lop named Nel.  It’s short for "Penelope" as I’d just finished reading the odessey.  (sometimes I’m tempted to get a black uppy ears and name it Od)

For the past year Nel has really lit up my life with her antics and affection and I’m glad to have finally found a place where other people appreciate bunnies as much as I do.

You can see Nel over in my avatar.  Yes that’s a negative of her, just because I thought it looked good when I was playing around with an image editor.  In spite of the fact that she looks like the antichrist she’s actually very sweet.

I look forward to posting here and talking with you all.

              Hello and Welcome VinnieD!

Yes – you are for sure on the right site no shortage of bunny fans here. Where did you get Nel from? I just love lop bunnies – I happen to have all “undecided bunnies” that have kind of helicopter ears that don’t really go up or down, unless ne bunny thumps and then all four stick their ears straight up!

Are you thinking of getting Nel a friend? I’m sure there are lots of potentials Ods out there!

WELCOME VinnieD! The lounge is a perfect place to introduce yourself. So tell us about some of her antics! What has been the best part of having her in your life, and what are some of the challenges?

And to add to xliddobunnyx’s question about spaying. I don’t know if you are aware or not, but unspayed female uterine cancer rate is very high. So even she is perfectly litterbox trained, zero aggression, just perfect behaviori wise, we are still big supporters of spaying just for the long term health of our bunnies!

                        To answer questions asked.

I picked up Nel at a local pet store. I’m well aware that it’s frowned upon but in my defense I did check the shelters first. There was one listed and by the time I called someone beat me to him. Good for the bunny, and I guess good for Nel since it led me to check pet shops next. I of course checked their credentials and the bunny’s health. I’d done my research beforehand. They buy from a licensed breeder,a nd it’s a small shop that’s able to give personal attention to every animal. They now offer their bunnies already neutered/spayed even if at a slightly higher price. Nel came home with me before that began though.

I do intend to have her spayed soon. I just wanted to let her grow up first. Such an invasive surgery is rather hard on a small animal after all. I still worry about it though. I’ll give the vet the full bombardment of questions to make sure he’s bunny experienced.

I’ve thought of getting her a friend but spaying comes first.

I’ll post up a better picture of her if she ever decides to sit still.

Awe! Lucky Nel and like you said, lucky other bunny too that was at the shelter.  That’s great you were careful about the pet store too.  While saving a bunny from a shelter is great, there are times when the greatness of a bunny is chosen, it happens at a pet store too. Have you began the search for a vet yet?  Like Cookie’s example, it can take a while and a lot of phone calls.  Let us know when you’ve picked one!

Good for you I view responsible people who get their bunnies from pet stores as a "bunny rescue" too because you’ve just elimanated the chance of one impulse buy which would otherwise end up in a shelter or even worse, out in the wild.

OH AND WELCOMMMEEEE! you’re bunny is ADORABLE!

welcome VinnieD! I’m glad you’ve joined BB 🙂

Nel is such a cutie! i’m glad you’re planning to have her spayed, that’s great. I would recommend scheduling the surgery when she’s about 5 or 6 months old. it really is a big health and behavioral benefit for bunnies, she will be happier and healthier once she’s been spayed. Bunny puberty, much like human puberty isn’t very fun – there’s such a rage of hormones that can be pretty overwhelming and lead to being territorial and even aggressiveness.

I CANT WAIT FOR THE OTHER PICTURES!!!!!!!!!! my bunnies get very tired after playing around so much so they end up flopping down after a romp around the living room. =P
