Hi I have seen the plastic hideaways in Petco that they have for rabbits or guinue pigs.  Can you really use those for a rabbit or will the rabbit chew and swallow the plastic?  Anyone ever use one?

I actually have used plastic hideaways for all my buns. There are some teeth marks in them nothing has gotten swallowed. They do need to be cleaned more often and inspected!

Some rabbits don’t like them because they only have 1 door. In the wild they always have an escape rout, so if it only has one door they will feel less safe.

Are you talking about the igloo things? They are pretty small if that’s what you are talking about – if you have a very small rabbit they would work, but a normal size rabbit wouldn’t be able to get inside.

A big cardboard box with a couple holes cut out is more enjoyable because they can safely chew on it… and cheaper.

I have one of those big plastic igloos. Bindi didn’t go in it much. He liked to sit on top. I agree with Beka. They enjoy cardboard more.

I learned the hard way not to use plastic hides. I had a plastic igloo for my rats and one ate bits of the plastic and I had to have him put to sleep.

Bunnies also like hideaways with two entrances/exits for easy escape. I always cut two small holes in a cardboard box and let the buns customize the holes to a larger size.

They also love to chew on cardboard boxes (: Wilbur loves to stand on top of her hidey boxes, chew them, and move them around. It’s good for their teeth.

My bun uses the plastic igloo as a ramp to hop up to a 2nd level where he has a “private area”. He rarely goes inside the igloo itself and it’s been nibbled on a bit but nothing serious.
