Planting Herbs

Now that it is officially Spring, I went to Orchard Supply and picked out some herbs to plant…

I remember Osprey who mentioned in another thread that there are different types of mint,

today I found chocolate mint which got me really excited…anyway…my thumb is hardly green

so I was wondering if any other members plant their own herbs and if you guys have any

tips? Any would be helpful…Thanks!

Floppy!!!! That is GREAT! Are you planning on growing them in pots? The thing I would say to watch out for the most is the danger of overwatering them. If you give them too much when they are young, the seedling dampens off (rots) and dies, use a high quality potting soil, and soak the seeds before sowing. What other herbs did you pick up?

I actually bought the herbs that are already growing a bit..in the lil containers..
I picked up..Lemon Balm (I think thats correct) Choco. Mint, Sweet Basil, and …
spearmint!

I seen a little potted curley parsley plant at the grocery store and was thinking about buying some of that. It would sure save money. If I can think of a place to stick it where it can get sun and not get eated/knocked over by my kitten I might buy some.

Do herbs need lots of sun?

Most herbs do need sun. You could always buy a plant light too.

I have my herbs growing, I saw the choc mint but wasn’t sure if that was ok for rabbits to eat, it smelt like chocolate, yummy.

If it is ok for them I might get some a couple of plants.

I can’t grow spore mold to save my life, but I have thought seriously about bringing in some seedling herbs for the buns. My question is: any plant that a store has sprouted for you must be teeming with pesticides and growth hormones and such. Wouldn’t it be better to sprout my own plants? Or are the seeds themselves just as full of junk?

Mimz it is possible they are sprayed, so it’s a good idea to ask them about that. Most places use root stimulator and I don’t think that affects anything if you eat it.

Yes, the chocolate mint is O.K. to give to your bunny! Pineapple mint is good too.

Mmmm…chocolate mint! ^^ Sssshhhh…don’t tell my husband…he has radar for that kind of stuff.
Pineapple mint too? Since when does mint come in so many different flavors? Or is that just the leaf shape looking like a pineapple? I’ve never seen anything like that. 0.o;

Alright guys….oh and about the plants that are already growing..they have Organic ones…which I assume is better?
I figured as long as I don’t use pesticides it should be good…so I took some pics..I know, I’m a dork but what can
I say? I am excited! Floppy is spoiled!!!

Floppy those are gorgeous, healthy plants! Yes, the organic are better in my honest opinion, they did not use any harmful pesticides, or harsh chemical fertilizers. They will be big, beutiful and gorgeous plants before you know it!

Mimz – Yep, just like their names indicate, the mint smells just like it: chocolate, pineapple, orange and apple.

thats cool I never heard fo choc mint.  my radish and beets are comign up I just love to see the little plant sprout up I am growing them for the greens and the actual part people eat probably give them away. or hubby will eat them. you plants look good. ohhh green thumb

ooo nothing is more exciting than fresh organic veggies!

my tip: don’t get really excited when the herbs first start to pop up and take Floppy out to inspect the garden.
We did this with Niklaus and he went on a rampage in our raised bed pulling out plants by the roots! :-O
his new nickname became Garden Godzilla! hahaha!

good luck – so far they look fantastic!! maybe with pots, maybe you can avoid a godzilla incident.

although, in the summer we buy those huge basil plants from trader joes. let me tell you – our buns can mow the entire thing over in less than a day. last time all that was left was one tiny sad little stub, poor plant!

hahahaha – Garden Godzilla! I just bought a few plants as well, I also bought a Sweet Basil, a rosemary plant, and a parsley plant. I personally have found herbs to be a fairly easy thing to grow, if you make sure not to over-water, and also make sure that they get lots of sun, I think that you will be sucessful! Something that I know nothing about, but I think is important is re-potting them if they get too big for the pot they are in? I bought big pots for my plants so hopefully I won’t have to worry about that…but I’m not really sure. Don’t forget to fertilize them with bunny POOPS!

ooooooo green grass & herbs… i’m soooo jealous!  lol.  we’re having a mild day here but there are still 5′ tall snow banks at the end of my driveway.  and all the melting snow looks so dirty especially when its over cast like today.  it’s been such a long winter here this year.  i def think i should start some potted herb plants indoors!  that’d brighten things up!

so since my first post I have gone to Home Depot & Summers Wind Nursery looking at different types of herbs
and I am still looking for pineapple mint…I am thinking about calling other nurseries now to see if any of them
carry it. I also feel like re-potting them in bigger pots is a good idea, but I think i’ll wait until they are a bit more
settled and get a bit larger before doing that.

I’m sooo jealous!! We still have snow, I”‘m waiting with baited breath to plant the garden. My parents just retired and they’re way until june/july so they said I could have their garden and plant whatever I want!! Yipee-bunny garden!!

I think up north here, most people plant on may long weekend, but I at least have to wait until the snows gone and it stops going to ten below at night!!

Floppy, Summerwinds definitely carries it, I bought some last year from them.  Maybe they were out on the day you went, or it is still a little early in the season for it.

Some people were curious about mints.  I have planted and fed to my bunnies peppermint, spearmint, apple mint, pineapple mint and chocolate mint.  They all grow really fast and don’t require a lot of care. I plan on planting a bunch more in pots this year.

K&K you aren’t alone, I am in such jealousy over everyone who can start their plants outside. It’s still way too early here too, it snowed on Sunday and again today and this afternoon we had a sunny snow shower. *sigh* I have all my seeds and am so anxious to get started!

YAY FOUND PINEAPPLE MINT at Summerwinds!

I planted a few herbs last year, so far my curly parsley and mint has grown back on its own. How cool lol. I had oregano,italian parsley and cilantro too,but they havent come back. I did buy some seeds though while at the hardware store,soon i will plant as its not really cold anymore. I tried a pepper plant for my hamsters,but i didnt realize it took so dang long to sprout! By the time it did,we had first frost and it died on me. Sigh. Oh well. Ill just keep my grocery store in business for that.

I am still harvesting my overwinter planted radishes.  These things are enormous, some of them are 3 feet tall.  The buns like the leaves and the stems.  The roots are pathetically small, it is a good thing I am growing these for the buns and not for me.  These were super easy to grow as a cool season bunny vegetable.
