Today when I went to clean Pip’s cage, I noticed the water bottle was completely empty. Completely. I thought at first, must have leaked out…but no wet bedding or puddles. I think this is the second time this week that I have replaced her 16 oz bottle for her.

Is this too much? She doesn’t seem to be leaving the same amount in pee. Eats and poops well as usual.

It is a little hotter in the house now, since we’ve shut up all the windows for winter. Maybe she’s just warm? I started putting freeze bottles back in with her today.

How much water does your rabbit drink? Pip is a failry good sized girl, about 6-7 pounds at least.

My bunnies have a huge range of what they drink. Grace drinks the most and she drinks probably around 64 oz. in 4 days (she pees quite a bit too ). But she has always done this, and has been very healthy except for one stasis episode that she had in the past two years. So I don’t think it is the amount of water that could be concerning, but maybe if it is an extreme change in behavior for Pip…Has it been accompanied by any change in behavior? Any change in pooping habits? Has he maybe had a few more treats than normal lately? I know that sugary stuff makes me thirsty. Also, when it gets cool and really dry out it makes me thirstier too.

Well Dana Krempels cites 1 oz per pound body weight per day is normal intake for mammals. So I guess over a week 32oz isn’t excessive. I’ve being looking into why water intake can increase lately because of Jersey. Reasons so far of top of my head are: warmer environment, increased fibre in diet, soothing mouth soreness, decreasing fever, renal issues.

I’m thinking it could be increased fiber too, she’s been begging for oat and wheat hay lately and turning her nose up at the timothy and orchard, plus I gave her a mighty big hay cube to gnaw on last night so that she’d stop eating her pen.
We’ll see how she does today. No strange behavior at all, just lazy queen Pippi.
