› FORUM › DIET & CARE › pinky’s not eating this morning
sheesh. she has me in a knot. she’s usually knocking me over for her morning pellets and today she just sat there. she did respond to me as usual when i opened the top hatch to pet her so i think she’s not in a lot of pain but when she jumped down to the main level she did seem less stretched out than usual. her tummy still felt doughy so ???
i gave her a big romain lettuce leaf & she sniffed it but diodn’t eat it either. so i gave her some simethicone. she immediately started to clean after which i always think is a good sign and responded to pets. then she jumped down into her litter & has been hanging out there. i cleaned her litter this morning to check whats coming out of her & she has had normal poops.
do you think it could be the heat? it was over 80 deg in here yesterday and very humid. its a tad cooler today. i have frozen water in margarine tubs on ceramic tiles in the girls enclosures and also have an oscilating fan going. last night i hung damp towels over the sides of the enclosures too. pinky was totally normal yesterday & it was baby bun – the old gal – who i was more worried about. she was lounging noticeably more. but today baby’s in fine spirits.
just out of curiosity… what are signs of heat stroke in bunnies? i was watching out for panting / labored breathing and extreme sluggishness but now i’m wondering if pinky may have some heat stroke?
Ok, heat stroke
Dealing With Heat Stroke
Temperatures in the mid-80s F (upper 20s C) and above can potentially cause a fatal heat stroke for rabbits. Signs of heat stroke include lethargy, difficulty breathing, or heavy panting and lack of appetite. If your rabbit does show signs of heat stroke, NEVER submerse him in cold water. Instead, dampen his ears with cool water and seek the care of a veterinarian as soon as possible.
How do her ears feel? *VIBES*
she might be affected by the heat… but i think you would know if she was really out of it. i’d just keep an eye on her today.
It’s possible it is too hot – if she’s like we are she might be less active in the heat.
Can you get her moving?
I would think that she would have to be out in the sun to get heat stroke – she has plenty of shade and is indoors at your home.
thanks k&k. her ears feel warm… like they do if she’s been binkying about. which i assumed was normal in this heat since baby bun’s ear feel the same. i just called me vet & am waiting to hear back (vet’s insurgery). better safe than sorry and since today’s my last day working from home if she needs to go in then today’s the best day for it.
i’m going to go spritz her ears with water. i offered her parsley & she hasn’t eaten any of it either but she did move out of her litter box & back upto her lounge on the top floor. she left behind a pile of normal looking poops which is good at least.
((((((((( Sending y’all cooling vibes ))))))))
Binkying & poops are always good! I have noticed I and my pets always eat less when it is really hot – hopefully it is just that.
Well, the ears are not going to tell you the core temperature of a rabbit.
Do let us know what the vet says.
sarita i just read binkles post and your comment to her also about the ears not being indicative of core temp. good to know. in other words, she could be over heated even though her ears are not particularily hot. i’ll def post back when i hear from the vet.
while i was reading binkles thread i remembered… i fed pinky a very smal piece of fresh pineapple last evening for the first time ever. i had recently cut up a fresh pineapple & had chunks in the fridge & so i thought the buns would enjoy a nice cool treat. it was a very small piece – maybe the size of an almond. i wonder if this is about that? hmmm.
i just went & checked on her again. still not eating. & her belly is def bloated now. i massaged her for a bit & then got her moving around. right now is normally baby’s out & about time but i put baby in her enclosure & opened up pinky’s & she came out & hopped around immediately. now i can see her in the kitchen trying to get thru the nic fence surrounding my table & chairs – her favorite challenge. she’s in pretty good spirits for a gal with a bloated belly. oh… and here she comes into the living room. no bunny 500’s but she’s moving like normal. wierdo.
i’ll keep you posted.
If you take her to the vet – have the vet show you how to palpate her stomach so you can know if it feels right or not – the vet really gets up there and mashes around to feel – the rabbits never like it.
Feel better Ms. Pinky.
I think pineapples might be very acidic too – wonder if that has something to do with. It’s been a long time since I’ve fed my rabbits pineapple so I cannot remember how they reacted but I know most shunned it anyway, they didn’t like the smell.
Sending “get well/cool down” vibes to Pinky~!
folks……… we have eating! she’s currently munching a fresh sprig of parsley. yaaaahoooo! still haven’t heard from the vet (i think surgeries go until afternoon) but i’ll post back when i hear from her. just before she ate the fresh parsley she went to her pellet dish & sniffed them for a few seconds… i thought she was going to eat them but then she just looked up, licked her lips & hopped away. thank goodness she ate the parsley!
and now she’s eating hay!!! yay for hay!!!
I guess Pinky’s just being lazy today. Glad she’s finally eating.
My vet is in surgeries generally from 11am to 2pm, then she has appointments, then….
yeah… lol… that or she’s just giving me a hard time about getting a job away from home. she’s eating her pellets now too. i was holding her earlier & was reclined a bit so she was laying on my tummy & i could massage her belly & listen for gurgles. i heard some gurgles but thought it was my belly & not hers
maybe i was wrong. anyways… i think the scare is over. i’ll monitor her poops of course & am still curious what the vet has to say. it’ll be good to know incase we have another scare.
thanks for the replies & vibes
it always helps a bunch!
okay… just heard from my vet’s office. she said signs of heat stroke would be heavy / laboured breathing and bright pink or red gums instead of rosy pink gums. neither of which pinky has. good to know tho. i told her about yesterdays pineapple treat, that her belly was a bit bloated and since she’s eating again i’ll just monitor her & call back if there’s any more problems. she also suggested a bunch of ‘cool down’ techniques… all of which i already knew of thanks to this site ![]()
I’m glad you heard from the vet and she gave you some info on the heat stroke – that is good to know.
Ah, summertime/ molt scares. Gotta love em.
thank goodness! you silly Pinky, you had your mama worried.
That’s good info about the gum color is great to have!
Glad she’s feeling good ![]()
Sorry Late again, I guess it’s the time difference. I am so glad Pinky is eating again.
