Is there a certain way to “prepare” pine cones or do you just go out in the yard and get them and give them to your buns?  Since the snow and rain have abated, I have found some nice pine cones, but they all have some sap on them.  Can you get the sap off of them or do you give them to the buns as is?  I just picture Bindi’s fur all stuck together with pine sap .

Here is a previous discussion about pine cones… they do have to be prepared. Let me see if I can find more info too….

Thank you,. Beka.  I’m sure everyone has discussed this previously to death, I just needed to be pointed in the right direction.  Thanks again!

I’ve never done pine cones myself… so I figured it would just be easier to direct you elsewhere. Everything I’m seeing online has conflicting info on whether or not to dry, but I think it’s better safe than sorry.

Okay, so from what I read on the other thread:  I should boil the cones (I wonder how long) and then let them completely dry out?  We have few cones here in WV, but my Mamma and Daddy in North Fla have big beautiful ones and I’m going to have her send me a box of them.  I’m going to go google, too.  Thanks again.

Being exceedingly nervous and lazy, I bought some pine cones for Sammy that were already prepared. They were cheap, but it does defeat the purpose of having some in your own yard. Sammy liked them, but isn’t wild about them. I think I now have too many since they are being ignored. they’re a fun toss toy though.

RP, I boiled the pine cones for about 45 minutes and it still didn’t get all the sap out of them so I threw them out.  Then I spent the next 30 minutes scrubbing my stainless that was covered in pine sap .  So, yeah, I think I’ll buy some to see if Bindi even likes them.  It seemed like a fun project at the time, but IMO not really worth it.  Thanks!

Most of the sites I remember said to bake them to make sure they had no bugs or germs, and you could do that on foil and then throw it out.

Wendy, yeah, I read that, too.  Then I read where you should boil them first to get the sap out and then bake in the oven so they dry out.  One site said they would dry out and have a nice sheen from the melted sap (they were preparing them for crafts), but I don’t know how they ever get the sap out.  Anyway, it was a nice thought, but I think I’m over it.  Thanks for the tip though

Leroy and Jeannie like pine cones! But I only buy the ones from the pet store… too scared to try to get my own for them.

Barbie, I’m thinking that would probably be the way to go, too!

Monkey nibbles on her pet store bought pine cone occasionally, but she isn’t too enthused about it. Moose could care less about them.

Monkey, I haven’t found anything that holds Bindi’s attention for long except her phone books – she’s on her 2nd one .  I just switch everything up occasionally, so maybe I’ll add a store bought pinecone to her toy box!

Monkey loves the mini willow balls sold on this site, she annihilates those in no time. Moose prefers teh cubes

Yeah, Bindi has been begging me for a willow ball and she has been rather sweet lately, so maybe….
