Hi Guys

 

I need to share this with people who care, I’m starting to get worried. I have a rather large shopping bag, containing a gift bag, containing biscuits. I really didnt think she would eat through a woven bag, plus a gift bag, plus a box of biscuits to get to the biscuits. This was yesterday morning when I got up and came down stairs to feed her. Ever since she’s been really grumpy and upset with me, and very reluctant to eat.

I felt a bit better about the situation last night when she had some cucumber (she normally just eats the skin, or whatever you call it) and thyme. Her poops were plentiful and normally sized. This morning the moodiness and kicking out at me continued, and she’s still reluctant to eat. She drank some cold rooibos tea and ate bits of hay, cucumber, basil, thyme, broccoli and tiny bit of carrot throughout the day (its 3pm here now).

She is in general not very good at eating her hay, I’ve tried everything. I give her mountain grass hay at the moment. There really isnt anything else thats packed and branded properly (that I can therefore trust). She even has a wire treat ball that rotates around a wire spine containing her hay.

I found some poops now and they are tiny. There still is a rumbly in her tumbly. Atleast she is still eating and passing something. She looks uncomfortable though.

I don’t have any meds left from the previous GI stasis incident, all I have is buscopan. I’ve read that buscopan might help with cramp and flatulence, but is contraindicated in ileus/gastric hypomotility. In fear of GI stasis I have not given her buscopan. Also, its the 0.1% paediatric oral suspension and I could only find dosage for the injectible form for lagomorphs.

OMG. Are small poops a sure indication of GI stasis approaching? Has any of your buns had a random small poop expedition that sorted itself out?

I don’t know if pie’s lazy or in pain. Her breathing is normal. I massage her tummy but at the rate she tries to get away it must be hurting if I touch it right?

I need to get to a vet, I know – believe you me, I don’t have a cent on my name (STUDENT). Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Oh, and if I say ”are small poops a sure indication of GI stasis approaching”- I mean to ask whether small poops can mean something else besides gastric stasis, and whether small poops can be a symptom of gastric upsets other than GI stasis

If you think her tummy is upset and she is unwilling to eat, you don’t really have any other option but to bring her to the vet. The earlier she is treated, the better. Maybe you can borrow some money from someone? I can sympathize with being broke…

You could try giving Simethicone, this might help if she’s having gas pain, but if her tummy is upset from eating something, she will most likely need to see a vet.

She’s been eating hay for ten minutes now. I emptied a whole fresh bag on the carpet. So she’s still eating, not as over eager as uasual. But for how long is the question. It must all come out the other end at a normal rate or eating isnt going to help.

Where do you get simethicone? Is it a veterinary drug or a paediatric human drug ie. can I buy it from a normal pharmacy? Do I need a prescription?

Oh dear. I will have to start phoning around for money to go to the vet soon.

Ok, I’ve established that it’s called Telament in SA and phoned the nearest pharmacy. They have the drops in stock. I’m going to go get money and the drops and give it to pie.

How do you give it to your buns? How many drops? Can I mix it with something and put it in a syringe to give to pie?

Simithicone is pretty easy to administer. Give your bun 1cc every hour for three hours and then 1cc every 3-5 hours as needed. It works pretty fast. Just use the syringe, in my opinion. You’ll have to hold your bun a bit so she doesn’t fight the syringe, but try to get most of the med into her mouth.

Ok. I got the simethicone. I also found another thread in this forum about it, and checked out the dosages. Telament has a concentration of 50mg/ml, wheareas Ovol has a concentration of 20mg/ml. I gave half a cc now, with a syringe as suggested, and will increase within the next hour if she doesnt poop soon. I will keep you posted.Boy was it hard to get her to swallow.

Although Semethicone is mentioned a whole lot on the net, let me post this for any South African who ever googles it for use in rabbits. Semethicone is available in South Africa in the form of drops, and the label name is Telament. It has a concentration of 50mg/ml which is slightly higher than other forms mentioned on websites for rabbits. Compare the concentrations with dosages mentioned on the net. It’s available from pharmacies, and you can get it from the baby shelves instead of the dispensary. It’s not that expensive either. I have given half a cc of half a ml and will do so hourly for the first three hours. If nothing happens I will increase to 1cc or 1ml. Thereafter I plan to keep dosing the same amount every three hours to be sure. If I don’t see anything within the next 2-3 hours I will see a vet.

And on this day a humungous fart was given (along with a heap of decent sized poops) !!!

I’m so relieved. Thank you for the help. I’m going to continue giving the simethacone. Please pray that there’s no relapse and that Pie’s tummy is nearly sorted. I’m holding thumbs the simethicone treatment will cure the situation.
