Jack just suddenly started sneezing/making a noise loudly and repeatedly while standing up and rubbing his nose with his front paws – not like when they are cleaning themselves and just sitting down relaxed, but standing up as high up as he could get. It looked completely wrong. When he finally stopped, I found some white phlegm – the size of my thumbnail. Quite a bit! I have no idea if it came from his nose or perhaps mouth.

Molly sneezes a lot in periods, but never like this or with phlegm.

        Anyone experienced this?

It could be he’s gotten a cold, or an allergy.
I think a visit to the vet is necessary. If it’s treatable, you want to start right away, especially if Jack is contageous and Molly might get it.

I have one bunny that does this quite often and is being treated with antibiotics. I think it depends on whether or not he is having these sneezing fits frequently, or if this is the only time he has done it. If it is just one time, it might not be anything too serious, but if it happens again, there are several different things a bunny can get that gives them the sneezes and runny nose, and that should be treated with antibiotics. Is Jack’s nose crusty or wet? If so, that indicates that it is more of an ongoing problem and he should be taken to the vet.

I’d be worried that the white stuff was a result of some abscess in the nasal area. But I also haven’t ever had a bunny that had nasal congestion or allergies, etc so I am deferring to others like MooBunnay who have more experience with this. MooBunnay, you said this happens to your bunnies sometimes too? Does the white stuff come out of your bunny’s nose too? And what causes that in the one bunny that is currently on antibiotics?

I have never seen it before, and his nose looks just fine. I was just shocked by the amount of phlegm that came out. I will keep a close eye on him.

Thanks to all of you. I hope you can answer some of BinkyBunny’s questions, MooBunnay, as I am curious too to find out.

Amelia is the one who has the sneezes all the time, and has a wet nose, as well as it gets crusty from time to time. We haven’t found the root cause yet, she was on penicillin shots to see if it would help but it hasn’t fixed the issue yet, and now she is on Baytril to see if that will knock out the root cause. The vet thinks that it is probably pasteurella, but we’ve also noticed that what seems to really set off her sneezing fits is when she leaps into the box when Brian has just put fresh hay in it, so we haven’t ruled out allergies yet. But I would say that the indication that something was wrong in the first place is that her nose always has some ick on it, and has a sneezing fit usually around once every few days.

Martin is our one that has allergies from time to time, as well as Grace, and once Grace did sneeze a big snot wad all over Brian I would say that the phlegm was a clear/white-ish color. She hasn’t done it again since, and I brought it up to the vet, but they said that if she hadn’t done it since, there wasn’t much to do unless she did it again. Martin doesn’t usually sneeze out any phlegm, but he does have the occasional sneezing fit if there is a new smell in the house, perfume or air fresheners usually do that to him.

I almost wonder, if he was sneezing to get that phlegm out. I’d keep a very close eye to see if it happens again. I would let one sneeze/snotty fit go by, but if it happens again, or you see the nose area is wet-I’d take him right in to the vet Keep us posted!
