Although I am relatively new, I have been lurking on this forum for quite some time now and I have finally had a major reason to ask a question.
Tonight after going to dinner, I decided to run to Petco really quick to look to see if they had any fish (I was planning on starting an aquarium). Well, I wasn’t even two feet in the door and I realized that they had bunnies that they were selling. Now, I usually always go to see if they have bunnies just because I’m curious, but then I usually move on. However, this time, I was immeadiately attracted to a small, brown spotted bun that was playing by himself. His feet were urine soaked, his hair was matted, but my heart melted. After waiting about 20 minutes, I finally got someone to come help me look at him. I asked the sales person what sex it was, and he pulled it out, spread its legs and showed it to me and asked “Well, what do you think?”. I was completely flabbergasted. Shouldn’t he have known how to tell the sex??? Although I have been extensively researching bunnies the past few months, I had no idea how to tell the gender. He then said, “Well, with rabbits they are usually sometimes too young to tell.” I was really confused then because the sign said that they were neutered. I pointed that how could they be neutered but not know the sex??? At this point, all I wanted to do was rescue him from the place…I didn’t care what gender it was. Well, I decided to buy him because I felt that he was obviously going to be bought by someone who knew nothing about rabbits and would end up released into the wild or at the humane society, so I figured that it was “sort of” rescuing. I honestly hate how some pet stores breed animals and take care of them poorly and I don’t want to give them my business usually, but I had to make an exception this time.
So, now he is in his nice home adjusting well. However, he is quite a mess. His feet are urine stained, and I know that will shed out in a few months, but his hair is very, very matted. I am not sure if just brushing it would get it out (I need to buy a new brush tomorrow because if I use the brush I have for my other rabbit, Rupert, he would get terribly upset for sharing, I’m sure). Should I consider wiping him down with just a warm washcloth and then drying him off? I’m just not sure.
Anyway, just a quick note about the gender issue thing. Apparently the girl who recieved the shipment of bunnies today (it was delivered today) had already left, and she knows the sex/age. They are going to give me a call tomorrow and let me know. I am planning on taking him/her to the vet at the beginning of the week just to have her looked over. For the time being, it is being quarintened from my other rabbit just in case.
I thought that he might clean it out himself, but I’m not sure. If anyone could give me advice on how I should tend to the fur issue, I would greatly appreciate it.
poor guy… or girl. i am so weary of the petstore neutering b/c i know that cannot be good for such young buns to be put under for surgery. i also wonder if they do a (for lack of a better term) half-@$$ job. when she calls back, i would ask for the doctor’s info from the vet who did the surgery and also see if they have the neuter certificate.
for the mats, i’d suggest you have someone help you cut them out, that’s going to be the least stressful thing for everyone involved. it will grow back in. in 3 months he (she) will be a whole new bunny. also, a vet appt is needed within the next couple weeks for a thorough check-up.
I thought Petco didn’t sell rabbits! I know they sell ferrets and the ferret rescue people boycott them. And I know they sell guinnea pigs and the cavy people boycott them, but I’ve never seen a rabbit in a Petco…except for the ones people drop off that they don’t want any more. Then Petco lets whoever wants them have them.
As far as how to clean him off…I don’t know what to tell you. I’d probably just try to wipe him off with a warm wet rag. I’m going to visit a rescue tomorrow, I’ll ask about that and let you know what they say if no one else has an answer.
Out of curiosity…how much were they selling the bunnies for? I paid a $25 adoption fee for each of my little guys. I was happy the people were asking for an adoption fee and not taking the chance of the babies being snake food.
Yes, I am going to be asking about the vet and whatnot. I just cannot believed that not even the manager could give me any documentation about the rabbits. I know that this should have turned me away from the whole petstore thing, but if you saw him, you’d understand…he just needed someone to love him.
He is just so tiny, and he cannot be old enough to have been neutered…he’s much smaller than my 4 month old bun. It too just concerns me that anyone would neuter such a small/young animal…it’s sick.
He was marked as being $100, but when we got to the checkout, he was only $80. I know that I could’ve rescued for less, but my boyfriend was with me, and he saw how attached/determined I was to better his life, and bought him as an early birthday gift (although, that’s pretty much just the excuse that I gave to my parents to justify me having to rescue him).
Oh and this was the first time I had ever seen a rabbit in Petco before too. I’ve seen them in places like Superpetz, but never Petco (which is why I was so intrigued).
I’m so appreciative of any help that I can get.
In the DC Metro area $100 is the fee to adopt one bunny through a rescue and $175 for a bonded pair. I don’t know what they do for the trios but they all come altered so, in my opinion, you certainly paid the amount for an altered animal.
I don’t see how they could have done a pediatric neuter since the testicles haven’t descended (usually vets don’t like to go in after them) and for puppies and kittens they have to be at least 2 lbs. I’m sure your bunny doesn’t weigh that much yet…my guys don’t weigh that.
I don’t purchase pets at pet stores but I do believe that you know when an animal is meant to be with you. It happened like that wth my Pit Bull. I was there when she came into my rescue and we bonded the instant we laid eyes on each other. She came home with me as a foster, I took her to all her vet visits, and I had every intention of letting her go to a new family but just the thought of not seeing her every day broke my heart so I adopted her. If her owner would have tried to sell her I totally would have bought her in a second even though I abhor back yard breeders. I love all of my animals but she is truly my soul dog so I understand about the need to bring them home.
I’m already so attached to my bunny boys I’m actually a little glad my girls are visiting their grandparents so I can have them all to myself. And, even though my girls aren’t the types to get tired of an animal and ignore it…I’m hoping they lose some interest in them so they can be all mine. Fat chance of that happening though. We still fight over the ferrets. And we’ve had them for four years.
I’m afraid this seems to be typical of this particular petstore. I have one here and they have tons of little bunnies who hardly look old enough to be away from their mummies. It just makes me sick.
Our Pip was a Petco bun, she was $100. She’d been there for over 6 months but they made my daughter pay full price. I’ve gendered her myself, from what I can tell she’s a she, and they give you that little neuter confirmation paper, but who knows for sure if it’s correct?
There was a link to sexing bunnies on the forum, bu I’ve lost it again.
The callous dismissive attitude of the people who work at this chain just chaps me no end. If I thought I could educate them I would, but I think the IQ of most of these people wouldn’t fill a teaspoon.
My daughter and I see buns in there at least once a month that we’d give anything to rescue, but they’d just bring in more. It breaks my heart.
I think there are some links at the top of the page that may discuss any kind of cleaning for your new bun. I just know it’s not recommended to immerse them in water like you’d do with a dog or cat. The trip to the vet is a very good idea.
I am glad this bun found a home with someone who cares properly for bunnies, thank you for taking him/her in. Please post piccies if you can and when you feel it is right for bunny to be photographed.
If I remember right, I think it was Petsmart that actually started, but then stopped selling rabbits. I would report your experience to the manager at petco. I mean, I too agree that they shouldn’t be selling rabbits, but if they are going to, they should at least have an informed staff. I also would take pictures of the bunny’s urine stained matted fur and send this to Petco and Rabbit/animal activists groups.
They obviously, so far have not stopped selling rabbits, even with all the pressure over the years, but they should be held accountable for at least taking proper care and making sure “records” of what gender the bunny is. This is still very important when bonding! It can much harder to bond same sexes so it would be helpful to know which sex they are.
I have to add – the Petco near me, thank goodness, does not sell rabbits, AND the staff seem to be knowledgeable about rabbit care as well as interested and open to learning. They know many of the animals/birds by name and know their personalities, so it shows they are interacting too - and their store and animal facilities are always immaculate. So, as we all know, this may not be the case with all the stores, but I had to throw that out there that at least the one that is near me is not indicative of the reputation they have. I am guessing it could be that there are two rabbit rescues, as well as three animal shelters very close and that may help keep the local chain stores in check. Lots of experts within a mile!
The Petco in Boca is the one that sells bunnies around here, and I’ve only been there once but they seemed more like what BB just described (thank goodness).
Is the matting only on the back where the urine stains are? I think careful trimming as Beka suggested is something to try first. A washcloth with mild soap may help too. You could also try sprinkling corn starch on the moist and matted areas – it will soak up the moisture and may make it easier to snip off. Also may help her to clean herself and feel less damp. (IF you had this bunny for a long time so there was trust I’d say an inch of water in a sink for a mini-bath might work, but I don’t know about a new baby. You’d probably find the baby had jumped out or up into your hair in the blink of an eye.)
Thank you all so much for your advice! I’m going to try the trimming and a warm wash cloth here in a little bit. I figured that it was best to let him/her adjust to its new home last night. I didn’t want to tramatize it by trying to clean it, but I think I’ll have to try soon.
Yes, I am definitely going to be contacting the Petco manager about this. I’m completely disgusted about it. It really bothers me that I gave them my money, but I just felt that he needed to be rescued…even though they will now ship in more…but it’s an endless cycle I suppose. I will be filing a complaint and maybe that will make a difference with their staff and their rabbit policies.
I am also going to be looking up some information on being able to tell the sex…but I figure that our trip to the vet this week may solve our dilemma (or if Petco seems to know the answer). I will surely be posting pictures of him this afternoon; he is so adorable!
I understand why you did what you did, and I might have done the same thing. I would like to post here a recent thread I just posted on Bunspace.com to share my opinion about pet store buns. Also, a few months ago, PETA released their findings after an investigation into Petsmart stores who sell bunnies. They posted pictures on their website of a man (not a vet), neutering male bun. There were no medical supplies or equiptment around, he just had the bun laid out on a table. He wasn’t even wearing gloves. The most disgusting part of the picture (and I still get sick every time I think about it) was that he was using Clorox wipes to to clean the wound and wipe up any blood. Yes, I said Clorox wipes, the container was sitting right next to the bun in the picture. To see more about their investigation, go to:

here is the recent thread I posted on Bunspace:
It is not my intention to offend anyone on Bunspace by posting this thread. I am just surprised when I view the profiles of so many buns here on Bunspace and read their stories, at how many of them were bought from pet stores. With all the recent news coverage about puppy mills and where pet store animals come from, it surprises me that so many people continue to BUY animals from pet stores. Are we not getting the message out that thousands of animals in shelters are euthanized each year because of the pet store industry?
I guess I don’t underestand why people would rather choose to buy than adopt. People who breed animals do it for profit. The animals are PRODUCTS to them, not BELOVED PETS, regardles of what they say. All of my animals are adopted from animal shelters. I would NEVER buy from a pet store or a breeder. I know it can be tempting when you go in a pet store because you see the poor animals living in not the greatest conditions and feel as though you are rescuing them, but remember, you are actually supporting the intentional breeding of animalas for sale by purchasing them! I try to not even to go into these establishments who sell animals.
I know many of the buns purchased from pet stores and breeders are loved and treated like royalty, but please remember that for every animals you purchase from a pet store or a breeder, one is euthanized in a shelter. Please help reduce the number of unwanted buns who are euthanized by adopting from a rescue or shelter.
I have a hard time taking anything PETA puts out at face value. They kill almost 100% of the animals they “save” and throw them in dumpsters behind grocery stores.
The footage is powerful and I don’t doubt that it took place, but I have to defend Petsmart…
I have spent A LOT of time in Petsmart stores with various animal rescues. I’ve been “in the back”, in the break rooms, pretty much every part of the store that’s off limits to the general public. And only because I was at these stores every weekend and part of what I did was help our adopters find the products they needed to take their new pet home. Sometimes that meant going “in the back” to see if there was backstock of things that were empty on the shelves.
Most Petsmarts have Banfield hospitals. Even if the Banfields don’t cater to small animals or birds…they don’t allow them to suffer. They will call an exotic vet to get advice on how to treat a sick animal if they don’t know the answer.
I’m not saying small animals don’t die or that they don’t get cannibalized. But Petsmart isn’t as cruel as PETA would like us to believe. Perhaps this girl worked in stores where the management was less than ideal and/or they didn’t have a Banfield.
I totally believe the mill story though.
Petsmart does a lot for homeless animals. They host millions of adoption events for rescues, they house animals for rescues, they donate money to rescues….I don’t agree with selling the small animals but I do applaud their efforts in helping the homeless animals.
I just wanted to chime in and say be very, very careful with the skin underneath the mats, it is probably thinner and much more sensitive than other parts. If it looks irritated you just might want to keep some 100% aloe vera gel handy. Check the skin on the feet too that were urine soaked. The skin can get scalded from it and while the fur grows out, you’ll want to provide more cushioning for his feet to help with recovery and any soreness. Buzz clippers will likely frighten the dickens out of your rabbit, and scissors can be dangerous if you must, use some with a blunt tip or cover the points with tape to prevent injury. It is better to use a mat rake or fine comb to gently work them loose. You can also do a dry bath with 100% pure corn starch to help dry up your little guy and his fur.

my local PetSmart had an adoption event last summer and that’s where i got Meadow. i think she was part of babies and a mom that had been taken to the shelter. i wouldn’t have gotten a bunny had they been selling them, but i was more than happy to adopt there and shop there for some supplies. our local stores do not sell bunnies.
Well, I understand all of your points, Aturbee. I feel that same exact way about pet stores and how pets are treated like products instead of companions. I honestly don’t think that pets should be sold, and yes, I fell victim to what they hoped would happen (you walk in, see a cute cuddly bunny, and take it home). I know that by buying this one, I am letting other ones suffer. I completely acknowledge all of that. I don’t think that anyone is perfect, and I’m going to say that this probably wasn’t my most shining moment. However, I know that I’ve made a difference to this bun, and right now, even though that is selfish, that’s all that matters. Too see her frolocking happily around and doing binkys makes everything all worth it.
On a side note, I did wipe her off and worked out most of her matted hair. However, some of it needed to be cut because it was just too matted, but she seems to be so much happier now.
Count me in as having a Petco bunny too, EBB. I hadn’t discovered the rescues yet and had gone in to buy supplies for Pringles (first time I had been in a Petco) It was early August and there was this older dutch boy hunched down in the corner of one of those glass cases. They said he was left over from Easter and had been there over 4 months. There was another case of young ones they said were selling like hotcakes but no one wanted the older one.
I went back in the store everyother day for 2 weeks, then there was this sign over him saying “Clearance, too old, gotta go, 60% off. He looked even more miserable, just kinda hunched within himself and not looking at anything and I couldn’t stand it. I got him. I had been asking the employees what would happen to him eventually, and got all these vague answers about they never lasted that long, usually died or people would take them for ‘other’ reasons.
I know, they were probably playing me to get him sold, but I was to the point of seeing that lonely bunny in my sleep.
I was a bit angry afterwards, because I asked if he was up for ‘adoption’ and where did I fill out the papers and they said in this case, just take him. Yeah, dumb me, NOW I know they didn’t work with any shelter or rescue. but I’m glad I have Daisy and wouldn’t give him back for anything.
He is my shy boy, it took a year before he would let me scratch his head, just 2 weeks ago.
So, here’s my count, in the order they adopted me over the past 2 years
1. Feed Store (son’s birthday) the lovely warrior princess Pringles
2. Petco – Daisy
3. Waco Animal Shelter (a failed foster) Pringles dumped Daisy and fell in lust with the dentally challenged Toby
4. North Texas Rabbit Sanctuary – beautiful Lola, the result of taking Daisy to Dallas for a hot date
5. Friend at work – parent passed away and no one wanted his black Lionhead, Simba
6. North Texas Rabbit Sanctuay – Simba (5 years old) went dating to meet gorgeous brown Hershey (6 years old) on a blind date (today)
I met Hershey the other month when I went up to buy hay, they handed her to me, she snuggled under my chin and gave me a lick. I knew it was hopeless to fight it.
there is nothing sweeter than 2 senior buns! I’m going to start a retirement home!

While I was checking out Petfinder earlier, I came across an arrangement with a rescue by Petco for a voucher for supplies purchased there. It seems that if you adopt at one of the adoption fairs Petco has, they give you this coupon booklet for buying supplies. Maybe the protesters have made some headway lately, because it seems to be a pretty good deal with adoptables. I am attaching the link because I want to be sceptical, and encourage anyone to read the fine print on this. It just made me go “Hmm. Really?” when I saw it.
Welcome BeeElleEss – No need to feel selfish or guilty. You are committing to caring and loving this beautiful bunny for his/her lifetime. Sticking to that commitment also helps rescue groups and shelters – by not adding to the ridiculous numbers of people who just abandon their animals when things get too challenging or inconvenient.
So i can’t wait to see photos of this lucky new bunny who has stolen your heart!
BeeElleEss I also found my bunny (the love of my life) at a pet store in terrible condition, frightened out of his wits. As soon as I saw him I knew it was love and I had to get him. I actually drove back home with him crying because he was so matted and scared. I had never paid any attention to pet stores previously but after that experience all I can hope for is that one day pet stores will be for pet supplies only and not live animal markets!
Kudos to all of you who have rescued your buns from bad situations in pet stores. Although I am against the per store industry, I can’t say had I been in some of your situations, I might not of done the same thing. This is why I try to avoid even going into store that sell pets. I feel depressed all day after leaving. We are making progress though, even though it may be minimal. A pet store near my house that has been there for 17plus years just stopped SELLING cats and dogs and now only adopts out rescued ones. The only bad thing is, they still SELL baby bunnies. I still will not support this establishment, but they are heading in the right direction. I’m sure all 3 of my shelter buns began their lives in pet stores. It warms my heart to know there are so many people out there loving their buns!
i think this is a decision that everyone has to make for themselves. i’d of course, rather the bunny end up in a loving, educated home than as an impulse purchase for a child or as an “easy” cage pet. this bun has a fresh start with you and will never be one of those shelter bunnies.
from my experience with spneutered baby buns at pet stores if they have 1 green dot tattood in the ear it is a female if 2 green tattoed dots it is a male. Yes they do alter them very very young poor things. Thats how I got Cotton. Before I found this site. They are called Boutique Bunnies at the petstore around here.
BeeElleEss, I also don’t think you should feel guilty for adopting in this situation! You didn’t take the rabbit because you wanted a pretty perfect bunny. You saw how pitiful his conditions were and wanted to help him. I think some pet store animals are just as doomed as the ones in shelters. Save who you can.
TankAndRangersMom, where do you adopt in the DC Metro area? I got Quincy from the shelter on Eisenhower Ave. His fee was only $20, and a rescue group paid for the neutering.
I can’t wait to see your little bun I can’t even go into petstores with bunnies in them because I start crying and my husband gets quite angry that someone made me cry and then its a whole big ordeal! So now, if I’m going to go into a pet store he scouts it first to make sure that there are no bunnies for sale – but I’ve found places other than pet stores to get all my supplies now so I don’t have to worry.
I think that those who have bought from pet stores did really save a poor little buns life, and can still influence the bunny world for the good by taking good care of their bunnies, and becoming educated about them, and spreading the word to other people about proper rabbit care. I have a bunch of bunny photos up at my desk at work of my bunnies on my couch, and hanging out with me, and people always ask about them, it gives me a great opportunity to educate others. So, no matter where your bunny is from – you have a lot of opportunity to make life better for bunnies everywhere
The rescue I vistited is Bunny Lu in Haymarket. http://www.bunnylu.org/
Was the rescue that paid for the neutering the same one that runs the shelter?

Oh, bunnytowne, I didn’t know that! Yes, Pippi has one green dot in her right ear! ^_^ Thanks for that info!
lolz…spneutered…sounds like a strange ice cream flavor or a weird kind of champagne or something. xD
The last time I was in Petco, the little grey dutch lionhead was still there, only there were about 10 other bunnies in there with it. Including one ADORABLE little broken torti lop that I was SO tempted to try and sneak into the car somehow (yah, like that could happen). But I just wanted to take the whole lot home with me! *sniffle*
EDIT: Oh, and MooBunnay, well said! *applause* I think I’m going to put some piccies of me and my bunnies together in my wallet so that when I whip that open in various and sundry places I can get a conversation going like one would with pix of the kids/grandkids! ^_^
Bee: I’m in Philly? Where in PA are you? I haven’t seen any rabbits at the Petco or Petsmarts out here. I’m wondering if it’s done more so in areas that there’s a market in some areas more so than others?
You did the right thing. I think you should definately follow up w/ the manager and even go up the chain (district manager, etc). I would also throw in the…..”I was under the impression that you guys were not doing this anymore, why did your policy change and when”. Definately make your voice heard and speak for your little “Pee-nut” (it was a pun). I’d love to see before and after pics and that might be the best way to get Petco to listen to you as well.
Moo: I can’t watch nature programs for similar reasons. I can’t stand watching them suffer or get eatin’ by other animals. I think it’s more cruel that the filming people don’t just rescue the animal from the wild. If I had cable I’d have to be careful even w/ watching Merkat Manor. I even have to have someone prescreen shark week for me.
I don’t believe so. I think they said it was paid for Friends of Rabbits or something like that. I’m not sure it’s a regular thing because when I was first looking they thought I’d have to pay. The shelter also gave me a voucher for his mandatory 10-day vet visit, which is for any adopted animal. Is that what all shelters do?

Well… eh… Great job for all you guys who saved your bunnies form bad situations. I bet that makes the experiance all the more rewarding if you know the home you gave the bunny was a lot better then the home that it already had. Me… well… I can’t say the same for myself becuase my bunny already had a great home where I bought her (from a breeder) yea but I am happy that she was previously taken care of well. I bought her as a baby (8 weeks) and I don’t regret it one bit (exept for the fact that I will have to pay more money later to get her spayed). Well happily the animals that are at my patsmart are from our local shelter (lollypop farm) and petsmart is just helping them out. Thankfully the cage and bunnies looked good and there was only two. All the other animals also looked pretty well cared for but… what do I know. I hope my petsmart is not as horrid as what I watched on petsmartcruelty.com *Shiver*
I wish all you and your bunnies well!
I can understand your frustration with that employee!! Once you’ve cooled off a bit and find some time I’d report the entire experience to head office on the corporate website.
In the meantime feel no guilt for buying in a situation like this!! That little bunny needed to be rescued no matter the fact that it was from a store-Congrats on your new addition and Welcome to binkybunny!
I’m patiently (or not so patiently LOL) waiting for pictures of your new bunny -and Rupert I have a Rupert too!!
skunklion – OMG, I thought I was totally off my rocker when I could no longer watch Meerkat Manor either. (sigh of relief) I’m not alone.
When the narrator humanizes all of their little thoughts, and then one gets hurt, chased off, lost or picked on, I just can’t take it. It’s seemed that the editors made sure to end each episode with some heartbreaking possibility, and you’d have to wait a whole week until the next episode to see if everything turned out okay. All week, I’d be thinking about those darn little meerkats.
I also can’t watch nature shows where animals kill each other. I know nature is nature and it can just be bafflingly cruel. I just can’t accept it. Many times i’ve watched nature shows with friends, and I’d say please fast-forward this part (we have DTV), and they’d say…it’s nature…it’s beautiful, it’s just part of the natural cycle of things. I’d say well so is poo, snot and bellybutton lint, but doesn’t mean it’s beautiful.
Skunklionshow: I’m located about 3 hours outside of Pittsburgh…but more closely…if you’ve ever heard of it…I’m about a half-an-hour outside of Altoona. I live in a small town, so I have to travel 30 minutes just to go to a place like the mall (but I love living in the country, so it’s ok). I highly doubt that there is a market for bunnies around here. I mean, every week they hold an auction at our local farms to sell bunnies by the crate for only a few dollars (I’ve been forced to stay away from them because I know that I’d try to rescue them as well). So if people really wanted a bunny, they could just opt for that (although I really hope that they wouldn’t). I rarely ever see bunnies in any of our local pet stores (thank goodness), so I just think that it’s a random thing that they sometimes have.
I apologize for not updating on the bun. Having two bunnies now have made my life a little bit more hectic, but it is so worth it in so many ways. I’ve been wanting to upload pictures, but my sister, who just had my niece last week, is borrowing it so that she can take pictures of the baby (I can’t blame her…she is adorable!) However, she is adjusting so amazingly and is quite the little ball of energy. She’s eating well and is exercising great. She also loves attention; last night she layed on my lap for 45 minutes and watched T.V. with me (it totally made my day). I completely forgot to check the dot thing, but I will do that when I get home…but she does have a vet visit on Thursday so hopefully we’ll find out about her health and gender then if the dot thing does not work.
BB: I ditto everything you said. I too have to fast forward/ skip ahead through nature programs. I love shark week on Discovery channel, but I can’t stand when they show them eating the seals/ sea lions. It’s weird but I can deal w/ them attacking people more so than other animals. I think we need a support group
BeeEll: Wow Altoona is out there! The towns that really throw me for a loop in PA, b/c they seem to be “out in the middle of nowhere” are: Altoona & Erie. That’s just my personal PA thought.
