Does anyone have health insurance on your bunnies? I was just researching it and I got a list from VPI Avian & Exotic Pet Plan. It says that is the #1 health insurance recommended by Vets. It covers A LOT! You can’t enroll online for the Exotic Insurance so I haven’t gotten a quote yet. I’m going to call tomorrow to see if it is worth it. Oh, also covers Spay/neuter. Again, I don’t know if it is worth it or not If you are curious the number is 1-888-899-4VPI

I have VPI and I am actually getting reinbursement checks this week (I can actually see what stage the claims are online) It costs $114/year for each of my bunnies, but I’ve already gotten that back with reinbursements. Jacks’ xrays, periodic urine tests for Jack’s stone/sludge.

They do not cover pre-existing or anything parasitic, which means mites, fleas nor e.cuniculi (as it is a parasitic disease).

We’ve had several discussions on this before and I’ll see if I can find the previous threads.

I also use VPI. I think it’s worth it, based on what I’ve learned in the other threads. If you want, just enter Insurance in the search button as a keyword, and it should bring up those threads BB mentioned.

BB, I didn’t know it did not cover e. cuniculi. good grief.

I was pretty sure VPI DID NOT cover spay/neuter surgery. Did they change it?

i looked into VIP, but didnt get it. for a total of 7 pets (now 8, just got another bird over the weekend!) the cost was too much! so i decided on getting the carecredit card. with this card, you can make monthly payments without penalties. you just have to make sure you pay the total off by the date they specifiy. the amount of time you have to pay back depends on the amount of the charge.

i also read on other boards that people set aside X amount of money from each paycheck for an emergency fund. thats a good idea as well!

There can be some variances from state to state as insurance is based on state law- but most of the differences seem to be waiting period to sign up, etc.

The website said they cover spay/neuter but it didn’t give very much info about the Exotic pet insurance so it may not

Hmm. I was told they didn’t cover speuter. Maybe they only cover it in dogs and cats? I don’t remember, only that they didn’t coer it for Sammy. Also had a waiting period of 3 months so got it right away.

It’s not the most cost effective for multiple pets, but very cheap for one.

I have VPI for Pepper and since she now has chronic pasteurella it has more than paid for itself.  We actually maxed out her benefits (around 2k) two years in a row.  they have weird coverage limits and I disagree with some of their math but it has definitely been worth it for me

Wow, I’m really suprised to see so many people with Health Insurance on their bunnies, i honestly thought it was still not available here only in the UK (That’s what it was when i was in college, wow I’m getting old). Anyone in Canada have it?
It’s a little to late with my guys right now, But I did want to look into it if I ever got another dog (Mines had many health issues), so if I ever get a pair of buns down the road (after my current guys are gone) I will have to look into it.

I mentioned it to my Husband and you should have seen the look on his face! LOL He thinks I went completely crazy! I mentioned some of the health issues with buns that people on this site were dealing with and he looked surprised. I think he is sold on the insurance. Would it be cost effective for 2 buns? To me it’s just peace of mind knowing that I would have it.
