I have a pet crayfish named Craven. He is a pretty cool pet. I love watching him do stuff. I feed him fresh veggies, canned green beens, algae waffers, frozen shrimp, and whatever else is handy. Also there is food made for crabs and lobsters called lobster bites that he eats.
I realize that some of you eat these guys.. but thats ok. Food animals are all reletive to location and culture. We don’t tend to eat them here in Michigan
and I just love him as a pet. ![]()
Here is a picture.

Here is a link to his blog in an aquarium forum.

Wow, he’s really neat. I’ve never heard of a pet crayfish before.. But I don’t know too much about aquatic pets. I bet it would be cool watching him go about his business. I like hearing about the other pets people have here on BB.. there are some pretty unique ones ![]()
Aaaw, that’s so cool! I ove crayfish -I used to have yabbies when I was a kid, crayfish are such cool pets. Yabbies burrow all the time, the tank was just a network of burrows…it was so funny watching him stick up out of one burrow and then another and another LOL.
Here’s a picture from Wiki, mine was a darker blue black colour though.
Hehe I used to catch those as a kid. Around here we call them Crawdads they live in creeks behind most houses here.
whenever I hear the word crawdad, I think of the food kind. Probably because people from the south call them crawdads and they are the ones who tend to eat them. Some folks call them crawfish. I like to call him a Crayfish partially because that is just what I like to call them in general but also because it goes with his name.. Craven the Crayfish. Flus the word fish sounds kind of pet like since I have pet fishies too!
So does anyone else have a strange pet? I mean besides those funny bunny creatures!
I try to limit myself to one strange pet at a time. I always get crazy reactions when I tell people I have a house rabbit, and then I get even more crazy reactions when they find out his name…
I don’t know many people around here that would eat a crayfish the adults get pinched by them
and the kids catch them and look at them then let them go.
I have had a few strange pets over my lifetime. A racoon, squirrel, sea horses and for some reason people seem to think turtles/tortoises are strange pets.
But my strangest of all would have to be me at 4 years old wanting a pet so bad but wasn’t allowed and I found an fly on my handlebars of my tricycle it couldn’t fly so I kept it lol it was dead by the end of the day. I also had a pet ant that I kept in a drawer in my bedroom when I was little.
What a cool pet! :] hehe I like the name Craven!
I used to have a pet ant when I was young too (lol) I found it in the winter on top of a snowbank haha… I think I eventually set it free again. Ant was the name XD.
Right now the only strang-ish pet I have is a African fat tailed gecko.

I used to have Ghost Shrimp, but they only live about 3-5 months for me before they die. Sure, they’re cheap ($0.11) but I feel bad that they always die. My three were named after Transformers. I’ve since moved on to female beta fish, and after my current batch pass from natural causes then I’ll probably get neons or anything slightly less hormonal. I figure that if I’m dealing with a crazy rabbit like Nova I deserve to have fish that don’t latch on to my arm when I’m cleaning the tank.
We have saltwater fish tanks- and for awhile we had a tank set up for a mantis shrimp. They crack snail shells with their claws to get to the snail inside, etc…. And we have all types of inverts in our saltwater tanks- different types of shrimps, starfish, urchins, seahorses, etc….
I have never heard of a pet crayfish either. We used to have crawdad cook-offs in Dallas though. I never ate them!
I’m always tempted to buy a blue lobster every time I see them in aquariums at Petco, but I don’t want them to grow all big! Haha. I guess a crawdad would be a good alternative!
I just read Craven’s entire blog forum – I’m fascinated!
That is so interesting. Cool too. So I finally get to meet Craven the Crayfish. He sure is red. And him hanging upside down. lol.
The strangest pets I had were green lizards or whatever color they were on they turned I tied one by a string to the side of the house so it could eat and not die. It died. Same thing with the frog.
Then I got into spiders. Had an aquarium with Wolf Spiders and I would bring a bug when I caught one. The spiders lived a while too. Then I let them go.
Oh and doodle bugs. Millipeds rolly polly’s whatever. Yeah I had a round type of beta fish bowl. I put dirt and those tiny green fuzzy stuff that grew on top of it from under the house.. Yes I crawled under the house when I was a kid.
I put doodle bugs in it and a broken piece of glass on top. It was like a terrarium. They lived til I took the lid off for a bit and I couldn’t get it back to behaving like a terrarium. ![]()
When I was a teenager I had a fire belly poison dart frog for a few years. He was so pretty- Green w/ spots on the top w/ a bright red belly (hense the name lol). He would only eat crickets that were alive and if I gave him a dead one he would not touch it for anything. He apparently liked the thrill of hunting his food. He was poisonous but not enough to hurt humans. Ive heard that if animals like cats or dogs were to get at them they could get very ill or die. At that time though I didnt have any other pets.
Also had a little lizard named herbie a long long time ago.
Now we have the 4 buns and a Hedgehog named Snuggles ![]()
Hedi, I demand pictures of snuggles!
I second the demand for a snuggles pic!!
The dart frog sounds awesome. I was just reading about them as pets and how to set up terrariums. I read that they are not poisonous at all as pets because in the wild they get there poisons from their diet. They eat poisonous insects and store up the poisons for their own use.
Well..ok…I will give you pictures of snuggles..but beware..she is awfully cute! lol
But just let me tell you, her poo is the nastiest, stinkiest stuff I have ever dealt with! So gross! Nothing gags me but this does! lol
Ok, so the first photo was when she was a brand new baby and I had her snuggling in a cute blanket; second one is showing her size w/ an easter egg; and the third is snuggles being a model in a car wheel. ![]()

There is no smiley face to convey my reaction!!!! Snuggles is ADORABLY CUTE! Ohhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! I can’t look away! Are they very prikly? How can something be that cute and not huggable?! That is just wrong! I live in hope that really aren’t prikly…..tell me this is so…….
But you are a nurse aren’t you? And you’ve never smelt anything as bad as hedgehog poop?
Nurses always have gross stories of foul smelling things…..
Anyway, back to Snuggles…..Awwwwwwwww!
Edit: The word editor kept censoring the word “prikly” when I spelt it correctly
I had to redo it 3 times, so prikly is the best I could do.
Dont they only put up their quills when they’re angy or scared? So if they’re a relaxed hedgehog it should be ok to snuggle right? I cannot believe how cute this hedgehog is! ![]()
Oh great now I want a hedgehog
Snuggles is so adorable! I could see my landlords face if I walked in with one of those ROFL!!!![]()
Yep Jersey, Im a nurse..so when I say that their poo is nasty that is saying something! They say you can litter train them but we havent been able to . And she is up most of the nite. Our vet will see her but always tell us if she “balls” up they cant do anything for her.
She always balls up around strangers.
Her quills are actually very think hairs that have a point on th end. When they are laying down you can touch them w/out problem but if they get scared they “huff” and blow air into the hairs to put them up. She has also been known to jump with her quills up trying to get us! When her hairs are down it just feels like you are petting a hair brush. lol
Overall she is really cute but not very interactive. They are extremely expensive to get and most people dont know they are allergic to the quills. Everytime I touch her I have to immediately wash my hands and even then I end up with red splotches all over my palms and arms whereever she has touched. ![]()
Hedi – so cute! I had a hedgehog named Chubb-Chubb growing up and I absolutely adored him!

Haha, jerseygirl – I had to try for myself anyway!
lol were you trying to spell the work p-r-i-c-k-l-ey? LOL
yesh :\
lol ! Thought someone would try! Hedi, That’s clever ^^. Why didn’t I think to try it like that? Think you’ve have found way around those censored words now……so we can all cuss to our hearts delight – lol.
that is one cute hedge hog. thanks for the pics! And thats so funny about p.rickly.
