Hubble is going to need something done with his teeth, there’s no doubt about it. I just don’t know how to begin looking for a really good vet to do the surgery though, as well as one that won’t break the bank. Should I contact a rescue and ask where they have things done? I think that I might be one of the few on here that lives in Sacramento plus I don’t know how common this problem is anyways. He has a very easy to feel spur on one side, and kind of clicks when he eats. He absolutly won’t eat even an inch of hay. While he is a very docile rabbit and will let me touch him without any visible reaction or obvious pain, I do want to get this taken care of and see if he will become even more of a normal rabbit. Gah, I wish I could just take a nail file up there and get rid of it! (not that I would, of course!)

Are you the one who posted the pics of your buns molar spurs or was that someone else?

That must have been someone else. I have not personally looked at Hubbles molars. I have had a vet do so, but I am not sure that he is as experienced as I would like when it comes to actually treating molar spurs.

Here’s a link to the Sacramento House Rabbit Society. http://www.allearssac.org/sacvets.html Yep, they have a list of about a dozen recommended vets in the area. I’d check these out, possibly calling the Society to see if any are particularly good with teeth.

I messaged the contactee on the SacHRS website and told her about Hubble and asked for perhaps a recommendation for a specialist or at least a qualified person that won’t break the bank. Thanks Pam!

Molar spurs are not terribly uncommon, but you do want to find someone experienced with rabbits (first of all), and someone who knows how to do the teeth well. I’m not sure if you remember, but BunnyLiz had a bad experience with her OLD vet filing her buns teeth down WITHOUT sedation and using outdated tools. So while it’s good to find someone who can do this inexpensively, I would also want to know their methods and what they use to do it. This is something that he will probably need to have done periodically for the rest of his life, I think some people have it done every few months, some people every six months or so.

Let us know how the vet search goes.

                    EDITED:

I found the thread by BunnyLIz, pages 3-5 talks more about the teeth filing…  https://www.binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/a…fault.aspx

The molar pics were posted by Soliel.  I hope she doesn’t mind if I repost them here…

Thank you for posting those Beka! The price is mainly a factor because I want to know what is ‘normal’. My current vet would do it for $300, but if it is something that I have to do every 6 months then I won’t have a vet fund by the end of the year. Plus I think that Hubble is older and if a vet was comfortable filing the teeth down with him mildly sedated I would be okay with that because I’d rather not have him go under. Obviously if it’s a quality of life issue I will have him put under and have it taken care of that way, but since he is so incredibly docile when it comes to just looking at his teeth I would opt out of putting him completely under. My current vet said that hay may or may not fix his teeth after the dental, though since he had none where I got him from I suppose there might be a higher chance he’ll fix himself after the current spurs are taken care of. I also will be very careful to ask if they clip or file the teeth as I don’t want further complications!

I think that the Sacramento HRS was a great idea and the best way to get a good vet. Hopefully you can get your bun to the vet soon so that he will start to feel better, those molar spurs look really painful!

I think the HRS is the best place to phone for vet recommendations. And you should get an idea on price and how often it will be. We all want what’s best for our buns but sometimes there are great vets who can do the same thing for cheaper-so why waste money? Keep us posted!
