I scheduled Peppers Neuter/spay today, he is going in after i come back from my trip on Oct. 9th. He will be five months on the 6th so this seems like a good time.

I asked a TON of questions and all were answered correctly except i was kind of worried because they said to take away his hay and food at 6 pm the night before. should i listen to them and take it away? or should i just feed him a little in the morning before he goes anyway? (he goes in at 7:30)

I pick him up at 4 PM that day if it ends up being a regular neuter. She said that if he ends up being a female or a cryptochid (spelling?) then they will be keeping him over night because it is a much more invasive surgery than just a neuter. and it will cost about 100 instead of 55 if they have to go invasive.

Also what type of anesthetic should they use? i forgot what she said they used but if i heard it i would remember it.

She also said that they do many rabbit spays and neuters and havent had any problems. she does spays and neuters for a lady here who owns 14 rabbits and did all of them. She said that rabbits arent a very common pet so they dont do as many as they do cats and dogs obviously, but that they do the greatest portion of all spays and neuters for rabbits in the surrounding area, and that the vet owned his own small animal hospital before he started the one he has now, and did several for that hospital as well.

Does all of this sound okay?

Uh…I’m not an expert but I think the fasting requirement is a red flag.

that sounds fine. you talked to them, so if you’re comfortable and got your answers, that’s good.

disregard the fasting thing: feed him normally up until the surgery. he does not need to be fasted at all. i would actually give him breakfast earlier that day so you can make sure he eats all of it before you go. take along some hay and have them give it to him right away upon coming out. the boys will usually eat soon afterwards.

Yes i feel really comfortable with them. The lady was very nice and informative, and she has house rabbits as well. (she also said I hope your keeping him inside right?) lol i had to assure her he was indeed a house rabbit.

I will definately feed him earlier and i will give them some hay as well like you suggested.

Thankyou for reassuring me, i really like this vet so i wanted to do it there

I’d also pack a “bag lunch” of veggies in case he does stay overnight, or in case he wants to nibble after the surgery. Don’t fast– rabbits can’t vomit so there is no need, and with all the stress associated if he doesn’t eat right after, you don’t want him going that long without food.

When I take rescue buns in for their procedures, I usually bring along a hay basket too so that they have something to nibble on right up until their surgery.

I think a lot of times the ones you speak with on the phone are just the receptionists and they’re likely not as knowledgable about the differences with bunnies vs cats or dogs. All they know is the standard speuter procedure. Now SHOULD they have something on hand specifically saying uh no don’t do this with a bunny? Sure. But they probably don’t.
