› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Pepe has stasis again!
It’s either his teeth or his gut! My vet is going to do some asking around about his particular problem.
Why is it that all my rabbits eat the same exact thing but some are healthy and others are not!
Pepe is not acting in pain – he’s was running around and generally being his cranky old self.
The vet is doing fluids, metroclopramide and he wants to do enroflaxin. I guess he wants me to do buprenex instead of metacam – going to make sure the instructions when I pick him up. And he wants him back tomorrow.
He had his teeth filed 2 weeks ago with really minimal points according to the dentist. Even the dentist was concerned because he didn’t think with those minor spurs he should stop eating his pellets – Pepe is one of my few rabbits who I even feed pellets too.
I admit, he’s not the greatest with the hay but I’ve seen him munching on it lately and I’m going to try to entice him with the 3rd cutting. He’s eating his veggies though like his cilantro and basil.
Oh
Sorry Sarita! I would be a wreck if my bunnies ever got sick!
Naughty Pepe for worrying his Mom! I know how nerve wracking it can be- healing vibes to Pepe!
Gosh. Could the vet have missed a spur? Is buprenex ibuprofen? I know ibuprofen is good for dental pain in humans….maybe true for rabbits also…
(((((Pepe))))) Hope the treatment for him starts working soon.

Poor Pepe! Hey bud, eat your hay, Mimzy highly recommends this 3rd cut! ^_^
I see the same thing with my bunnies…one will react well to one type of hay, another will either not touch it or, if they do eat it, they get sick. Doesn’t make sense.
Could it be topicals on the hay? Like fertilizers and stuff? Just where they’re grown? Confusing! ![]()
((((pepe!!!))))

Do they make vicodin for bunnies? Its what my dentist gives me >.>
*snuggles for Pepe*
Jersey I did think of that but this was the vet specialist and I honestly don’t think they would have – they have 2 that work on the rabbits together. But I know when this has happened in the past at times it has been his teeth but they were done 2 weeks ago.
Buprenex is an opiad – not sure if it’s like Ibuprofen or not.
I did notice that since September he has lost almost 2 pounds too which the receptionist said she would talk to the vet about today since we both thought, not good. He’s back today for a recheck and I asked them to feed him some critical care too – he’s extremely easy to hand feed. I thought he was feeling rather bony too.
Weird thing is though he was doing tooth purrs this morning and bunny flops…I just don’t get Pepe at all!
Well the vet wants to do bloodwork because he was concerned about the weight loss but he said Pepe was very agitated today when they were trying to hand feed him (which is not normal) so I will feed him at home tonight some more.
He wants to do bloodwork tomorrow when he hopes he may not be so agitated.
We are going to try cisapride as well as the reglan. Going to give him buprenex when we get home tonight and tomorrow morning.
He has some calls and emails out too.
Neither one of us think it could be the teeth at this point either not after 2 weeks…maybe 4 weeks but not 2 weeks.
So we’ll just see what happens at this point and what the bloodwork shows – we did bloodwork a few months ago so at least he’ll have a comparison. He did get ahold of the dentist as well to get the records from there.
Pepe is back this morning at the vets with all his meds and hopefully the vet can do some bloodwork.
I feel awful to have to take him in for 3 days straight and then to have to medicate and hand feed him as well. Hopefully since he will be at home all weekend he will be well rested and START EATING :~)
Poor little dude. I need to figure out what is causing his problems too.
Am I guessing correctly that he has constipation? I wonder how a few crasins and raisins would affect him. I know that Hunny poops like crazy when I give her a couple. At least he is purring and flopping around. The pain meds must make him feel pretty good.
Rabbits don’t really get constipation like humans. It’s a motility thing which means their gut has stopped which can be for a number of reasons.
Raisins and Craisins really aren’t going to get a gut going either – since they are high in sugar, they are more of a culprit than a helper.
If you have never read this article, it’s an excellent article about rabbits and stasis that all rabbit owners should read.

Thanks for the information. I am still learning all about rabbits since Hunny is my first.
I have been reading the information and Hunny has pellets that cling to her bottom every so often that I have to remove. Othewise, she is always eating good and drinking good. I will be very careful from now on also of not allowing her to have as many carbohydrate treats.
Oh Sarita, I am just catching up here. I am so sorry. How stressful for you and Pepe! I don’t have much information to offer, but I’m sending out healing vibes and I hope whatever the problem is you and the vet will soon be able to get to the bottom of it!
Thanks BB – we did bloodwork today and I have to say I hope I don’t hear from the other vet on call tomorrow in case it’s not good. That I don’t want to hear.
The vet did recommend canned pumpkin which I didn’t even think of but do have on hand…get so stressed and cannot think when my rabbits aren’t well. So I will give him that this weekend. Right now he seems like he is interested in some cilantro…I think he’s just exhausted from 3 days at the vet, poor guy! So this weekend it’s just meds and hand feeding and me.
We don’t want to do any dental procedure until we can get some more weight on him.
Do you have any Crit Care on-hand? I’ve heard they tend to like the strawberry bannana flavoured more than the regular.
And it’s pumpkin season, so you might go take a nice walk in a local farm field, get a pumpkin or two, and carve it up and mash up the fresh pumpkin for Pepe at the same time. Just as something to get your mind off of things but still taking care of things.
Oh, poor Pepe! I know how hard and stressful statis can be, on both bunny and owner!

It is stressful. I did not hear from the vet today so I take that as a positive – that his bloodwork wasn’t bad.
We are eating some greens now. I do want to figure out his problem though and I think once we get back to were we need to be I will start taking his greens away to see if that is his problem. I need to figure out my little mean dude’s problem.
