Hey guys, I’m a little paranoid about everything with my buns right now since my mom’s bunny passed away. (He passed from old age and has never been around my buns) Anyway, Ms. Penelope my lop has a bit of poopy butt. I tried to think if I had fed her anything different lately and I don’t think that I have. The only thing that I can think of is the carrot that I broke up yesterday to give everyone a piece of was not as crisp as super fresh ones but it wasn’t rotting or anything crazy like that…just slightly bendy as they get when they’ve been in the crisper a couple weeks.

Anyway, she’s still having some hard poos as well but I noticed a little poopyness on her white fur around her bum and i noticed a little poopy mess on her resting pad in her cage. I’m going out of town tomorrow until wed. and my bf takes care of the furbabies while I’m gone. Does this sound like a super urgent get her to the vet thing or a keep an eye on her and make sure she’s eating and drinking and poopy butt goes away really soon thing??  If this sounds like bad bad news then I can try to work a way for her to get to the vet with either my bf or my parents if he can’t get off work slightly early one day…

        What do you guys think???

I know you probably don’t want to hear this for inconvenience sake, but I would have a vet check her out, especially if you are leaving. I would really hate to leave it hanging out there if I weren’t there. I’m sorry I didn’t catch this anywhere else, but how long are you going to be gone? Is Penelope eating less hay and perhaps gorging on paper or a nice big fat phone book? Sometimes poopy butt is not just a GI flora imbalance or parasite issue, too much protein, but could also be due to a lack of enough fiber (hay) in the diet.

I will be gone from Sun-Wed. But my bf and I have a house together and he takes good care of all the furbabies while I’m away. I was thinking that maybe she just was choosing not to eat enough fiber….she always has fresh hay available but usually doesn’t eat quite as much of it as my other critters (guinea pigs, rabbit, chinchillas, etc) however, she does eat it. Just to give her another option today I broke out my new shipment of fresh orchard/bluegrass filled up another hay rack with it and left it out in addition to the brome hay that was already out for her. She’s been munching on it and she’s still interested in her pellets as well. Since seeing the poopy butt I have ceased ALL veggies for her and am focusing her on her hay hopefully. I’ve already arranged for my bf to drop her off Monday morning at my parents house and they will take her to see her vet.

I just had both my girls to the vet last month for a checkup right after I adopted Annie, but I guess you never know when somebunny’s tummy is gonna give ’em problems. I’m just paranoid since my mom’s bunny passed last Tuesday. I couldn’t stand to lose my lovies.

Isn’t it always like this – right when have to leave somewhere?! It’s good that you options though to get her to the vet while you are gone. Do they all know what to look for when it comes to a sick bunny? And are you able stay in touch with them? Also, you can have them come here to. But if the PoopyButt continues, I would have your mom take your bunny to the vet.

Bunny – I was also thinking that stress can cause this too. Can your rabbit see you packing and getting ready for your trip? I don’t blame you for being paranoid, I would be too especially after your mom lost her bunny recently.

{{ VIBES }} That’s excellent your parents can get her into the vet for you! If your BF takes good care of the furbabies and she’s going into the vet that should cover the bases. Try not to worry too much then! And yes, BB I think they know when we have to leave town and do these things on purpose!

If you think Penelope might not have been eating her hay as much as usual, that can definitely lead to poopy butt. I think it is a good idea to stop with the veggies, or decrease the amount to see if that improves the consistency of the poops. Can you tell if the poops are just a bit smooshy, or do they have mucus on them? My bunny recently had stasis and the way I could tell ahead of time was that the poops had some mucus around them. Another thing that can contribute to smooshy poops is too many pellets – does your bunny get pellets? And how much?
