Pen caging

Hey, I looked around on the site and don’t see anything, whereabouts can I find the pen caging that I see alot of people with?

Lots of members here recommend the 36 or 48 inch high exercise pens with the walk through door (as opposed to those dinky little doors only the pet can use). Some pretty decent ones to look are the Precision and Midwest ones. Not sure where you can get them. You can sometimes get good deals online through Petco or Amazon.

Is that the type of pens you mean or is it the habitats made out of grids you’re thinking of?

If your talking about the grid thing that is like what a dog kennel is made of then no. His current cage is like a cage on a plastic bottom. No hurtful floor grid. For the new setup I like the ones that just look like they hook together, kind of like fencing, sort of like a playpen for babies, open top but fenced around. He is an indoor rabbit so those outdoor hutches wont work.

I saw alot of those in the pictures, and alot of cool ideas too, whoever that was with the storage bins with holes cut in them for a highrise bunny condo that was pretty neat lol. Anyhow, if you have that type of pen ‘fencing’ can you chime in here and give me a few ideas on where to get them or what to search for? Thanks!

That looks like an exercise pen, or several joint together. Some come with a metal pin that joins the panels together.

The grids I was refering to were the NIC grids (wire storage cubes) but  lots of people use them to make guinea pig and rabbit habitats.

Yes that is the one lol. Ok so those exercise pens seem like what I was thinking about. That seems feasible for a living area right? I was thinking setting it up in a corner and then he would have more of a living area during the day while i’m at work, of course I’d still give him free roam a few hours a night :o)

Absolutely feasible! They’re easy for the owner too, you can get in there with them and cleaning the area is easier also. You needn’t go as big as the one in the example you posted though. lol  I mean you can, but that area is huge! I’d say that was set up as a play area for out of cage time.

Yep, I don’t have the room for thaat big lol. I did read though, that rabbits do like to feel safe, so sometimes too much actually is too much. Or at least have some kind of small place they can go to ‘hide’ I notice when he is having free time he tends to migrate to certain spots in the room to rest, one is under the couch, the other is in a corner by where my computer desk is, and the other is over by my table/chairs where there is hardly any traffic and is kind of away.

The cool thing is, my living/dining room is next to the kitchen, and the rest of the house goes the other way you have to leave the kitchen. So in essence, he has the entire living room to run, but my kitchen is tile, and for some reason he does not ever dare to venture onto tile!! I mean not even one time. It was real funny a few times I would catch him being curious and kinda leaning over the tile and sniffing, but never stepped foot. It works out becuase I never have to wonder what part of the house he is in, or keeping an eye on him. Plus I’ve pretty much bunny proofed that area so were both happy.

**UPDATE**

So I picked up an x-pen, and also started him on litter training. He uses the litter alot, but not always, but I dont see any pee just poos on the ground, so its looking good. It’s only been 2 days though lol. I went with yesterdays news unscented for the litter. So far I’m pleased with it, but all this little guy does its eat and poop, which makes sense tho lol, hes only about 5 months or so. I wish I knew for sure, but the place we bought him said about 10 weeks. It seems right because he has really grown since then, and we got him in May.

So, litter, not going to last as long as some say, but for now while he’s an eating machine I’ll just have to foot the bill haha. He seems to like the freedom, and I cut an opening in a cardboard box and put it upside down for a hidey hole, he likes that. I have a few other things in there, some sticks, a dig box which i dont think he gets lol, or if i even did it right, a wood hangy thing, and some egg carton type thing that came in my video card box.

He is also now having nightly salads, he seems to favor leafy stuff, he chows down his romaine and parsley, eats green pepper and celery but slower. So, thats where we are. Learning process for both of us, and we are making progress!

For rabbits you only need a thin layer of the litter at the bottom of the pan, so you can save on litter that way. I barely cover the bottom and my buns arrange it to their liking, it absorbs everything and helps a lot in not running through litter like crazy with much they go to the bathroom since you can’t really scoop the solids out like with a cat.

Oh LOL, I put about quarter of the litter box full, sort of like how I do for the cat, but i fill hers half, its a deep box. Thanks for the info.
