Peeing over the edge of her litterbox

I don’t know what to do. She was spayed over two months ago, and her last pasteurella test came back negative… I can’t afford to go to the vet right now, but I don’t think she’s sick, she’s eating normally, and doing binkies and bunny 500’s when it’s playtime.

She’s managed to pee between the bars of her cage and all over my floor Right now, I’m going to move her into another cage I have with a very deep plastic base so nothing gets outside the cage, but it’s still a problem. The box is pushed up against the cage wall, so it’s in her bathroom corner. I just don’t know what to do!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try to get a larger box, she may just be peeing over the side. Lady does that all the time. I had to get a xl cat box and it stopped

My cat has that same issue, they make really high cat litter boxes with small low openings, that might help since rabbits usually like to pee in the corners of the litter boxes. Sorry if that doesn’t help!

A high sided litter box with a low opening is what solved our problem. Bunny was always backing up into a corner and our original box was just not high enough for him. Since we got the high sided box we have not had an accident in over three years.

A higher litterbox seems like a good idea, but I’m having trouble finding one that’ll fit in her cage. It’s only 17″ by 30″, and what I’ve found will take more than that. Any suggestions or links?

She’s pretty small, just barely two pounds. I thought the rule of thumb was at least four times the bunny’s size? About eight of her can fit in there. Lots of room to stretch out.

The cage is really only for when I can’t watch her, she’s out most of the time. Although, about half the time she’s banging around to get me to open the cage, she just sits in there for hours

Even at 2lbs that cage is faar too small Bunnies should have at least 8sqfeet of space at all times, even small ones.

A cage needs to be big enough for a full size litter box, a place for food and water, and a large place to play and flop out fully, without being cramped.

My 1.5 lb bunny had a cage about that size, but it was attached to an xpen and the cage door was never closed. It was just for her sleep area and hidey hole really. I have since removed it and stored it for emergencies, as it isn’t nearly adequate for her needs.

Hm. I have two cages that size. Maybe I’ll zip tie them together and take out one wall?
I guess I was misinformed, I thought she was fine in there =/ Guess that’s why she’s been rattling the bars so much lately, huh?

The only litter boxes I can find with high sides are for adult cats, and wouldn’t even fit in her cage. I could get a bigger cage, but I’m about to move to an apartment where she’ll be allowed to roam all the time, so I feel like that would be a waste. I could use one of those triangular corner pans, but she digs, and I cant put the square screen on it… Would it be safe to cut some wire mesh to size and grind down the sharp edges? I fee like she’d pull up one corner and chew on it, dunno if that might hurt her teeth..

Well, any cage you can buy at a pet store would be too small anyway. And it seems like it would take at least a month until you have everything unpacked and bunnyproofed at your new place, right? Have you ever had her as a full house bunny? Sometimes it takes a decent transition period to work the kinks out, make sure she doesn’t chew the baseboards or the carpets, give you time to buy the appropriate bunny proofing for whatever issue you come across?

Both of my buns I consider house bunnies, as they are out in the house all day. But at night, they go “home” in to their pens, because 1, I don’t want them waking me up at night, and 2, if there’s an emergency, i want to be able to grab them and not have to worry about finding them. I would recommend buying an xpen, even if you end up having her have full access, it fold compact and you can stash it away for a situation you might need it or even to take her outside in the warmer months for play time. They are about 40 bucks on Amazon

I went to PetLand and bought a very big corner litter box. She digs the litter out, and then will stand with just her front paws in the box, and pee on the litter on the floor

Once I put a screen in the box to stop the digging, her litter habits are perfect! Thanks for the advice, everyone!

I’ve also put a bunny wall across the middle of my room, and once I’m sure all the bunny-proofing works, she’ll be free all the time. When I opened up the side of her play area, she ran out and did the biggest binkies…
