Peeing on the couch?

Every since we got Abby, almost a year ago, she has ALWAYS snuggled with us on the couch or laid down on it.  We can come home from being out or come downstairs from sleeping and there she is sleeping on the couch.  Well, a few weeks ago she started peeping and pooping on the couch!  Sometimes when you’re sitting right next to her.  Other times we’re not even in the room.  For the past few days I’ve been loading totes on the couches before we go to bed so she can’t get up there and I have been telling her no and putting her back on the floor every time I see her jump up there. I just got a futon frame from my mom and bought a new mattress and cover for it and don’t want it to be ruined. I really like that she comes up on the couch with us for pets and since I’m looking at another surgery I’d hate to ban her from the couch.  I’d get no bunny snuggle time.   Is there anything I can do to correct this?   Thanks for your help!

I think this sometimes happen after they get comfortable and now feel more possessive of you. It’s possible that if you keep doing what you are doing for awhile she will stop this the next time you let her on the couch.

Some people have had success putting a litter box ON the couch and when the bun starts to go, put them in the litter box and gradually they are able to move the litter box to the floor beside the couch instead. You can also buy vinyl lined furniture covers for children who have bladder control issues, you could put one of those on the couch while you try to train her so her pee won’t soak into it.

Her litter box is on the floor in between the sofas. Not even a foot on each side away.
