I do have a young rabbit named Peanut. She was the smallest in her litter (I adopted a pregnant rabbit who gave birth in my care). The mother would take her out of the nest everyday and I would have to “revive” the baby by warming her up. Eventually I gave up on keeping her with the mom since the problem wouldn’t stop and I was worried the mother may eat the whole litter because of this one baby. I hand fed her until she was 3 weeks old and placed her back with the litter. The mother accepted her and I had a bunch of happy little bunnies. This sweetheart that I raised would come up to me every time I came up to the cage and would give me little lick-kisses. This sweet little bunny only stayed sweet for so long and now she is TERRIBLE.
Her siblings are all rehomed. She remains with her mother and they are very bonded. She is my only bunny that is not fixed because the vet is worried about her heart being smaller than it should be. They do not advise surgery. This bunny attacks me daily. I love to hand feed her in an attempt to bond, but she is almost a year and a half old and nothing has changed. I’ve tried petting her outside her cage. I’ve tried letting her come to me. I never approach her from above or in front of her face, but she still attacks me every time. When she sees me she nonstop growls. It’s much worse around other people. When she sees others near her cage she full on throws herself on the cage bars in an attempt to attack. I never let her out around other people because I know she will attack them.
Peanut recently broke her leg. I don’t know how, but she did. Because of this I have to handle her more, to clean her temporary small cage, to clean her butt and splint, to make sure she isn’t chewing her splint again, to medicate her, and to weigh her since she seems to be eating less. Her attacks have been worse than ever. There has not been a single day where there has not been blood drawn. Even when I am simply refilling her food bowl she attacks me. I walk into the room and she is a full on growling ball of fluff and anger. Today I wrapped her in a towel in hopes that she wouldn’t bite me while I look to see if she needed to be cleaned. She clawed and thrashed so much that she got free and bit my wrist, drawing blood that drizzled down my hand.
This is becoming ridiculous. Does anyone know what I can do or what the heck is wrong with my devilbunny?
