My bunny is free range when I’m home and loves to play by throwing my patent leather flats in the air. She doesn’t really chew on them or destroy them, she just likes to throw them and nip at the bow a bit. She doesn’t do it all the time, and since I’m watching her closely, she’s not really destroying the shoes, and it’s funny and fun to watch, I’ll let her do it a few times before taking them away. However, I’m afraid that she might decide at some point to start chewing them in earnest and hurt herself. Does anyone know of a toy that might provide a similar feel for her, but that is more bunny friendly?

That is rather cute. Lets hope they do remain a shoe toy and not a chew toy!
I keep seeing the bunny letter pouch toy on the homepage here. Maybe she’d like that? I has areas she could grab with her teeth and toss it around. I don’t know how long it would last as a toy though. It is completely edible!

My rabbits don’t play with much. I have seen rabbits enjoy things like mini plastic slinky, and baby toys like plastic key set.

There are some DIY toy ideas in this thread also.

My bun completely ignores hay, grass, willow, twig toys. But he too likes my flats – he sticks his face in them and sort of half binkies around.

Maybe you could pop into Payless or similar and get a pair of cotton canvas flats for him?

Thanks for your suggestions! She has edible toys made of wicker and mats made of hay, though she doesn’t seem to pay much attention to those. I also have a plastic key set, but she also doesn’t pay much attention to that. I will try the slinky to see if that works. Thanks!

Aki (my bunny) will sort of chew on a sea grass toy made for birds, but half heartedly. She’s had access to some other of my shoes (made of cotton, canvas, matte leather…) but she doesn’t seem to like those, only the shiny patent leather ones!

I’ll try your suggestion and get a pair of shoes from Payless, maybe I can find a pair of shoes that I don’t feel will hurt her, and that I don’t mind her destroying (I also have some fleece slippers that I never use). Although I’ve heard that cotton is not exactly safe for them either… Maybe I can get her a patent leather set for herself and monitor when she’s playing to make sure she doesn’t chew on them… It’s too bad they don’t have something like that specifically for bunnies. Then again, it seems bunnies find odd ways to entertain themselves!

When I first brought mine home and she was tiny, she had a blast hiding inside my cowboy boots. Now I have to put them up because she just wants to eat them. I second baby/cat toys myself. I got a sort of rattle thing for mine and when shes feeling up to it tosses it around.

If you must give her something leather, the safest option is vegetable tanned leather, it’s the same as what’s used in bird toys. Other tanning process are very toxic. Even with veg tanned leather, the plants used may be toxic so if you can find a local source and if they’ll share what they use to tan, that would be your safest bet. Usually leather is recommended to avoid because obviously it’s animal based and probably not healthy for a rabbit to eat, but I can’t imagine that tossing something like that around would cause issues.
