        Hi,

some of you may remember a few of my posts about ginger and Misty. Yesterday Misty was hiding and weak and I knew something was wrong. I took her to the vets and they couldn’t find anything specific but gave me something to keep her gut moving and pain killers.  She progressively stopped eating and drinking and I was hand feeding and syringe watering her throughout the night. This morning after her meds and an attempt to get her to eat some banana (which she managed a mouthful of) she did a quick run around her cage, took a couple of open mouth gasps for air and then led down next to us and passed away.

this is gingers second bonded rabbit to pass away and I don’t know what to do. I have her in their enclosure and left him to grieve for a couple of hours but I have now had to take her to the vets for her to be cremated. Where do I go from here? He is a spoilt bun and I really want to make sure he’s ok but don’t think I can go through this again. Do I need to think about bonding him again? He’s now 5 and I really don’t know what to do but if it was just me I would not be getting another fur baby. Please help!

          I’m very sorry Misty passed.

If you’re at home a lot, Ginger might be fine with you as a life partner instead of another bun. It is better for buns to have a same species partner, but that isn’t always possible for very many different reasons. It is very hard to cope with the loss of a rabbit.

If Ginger shows signs of sadness like not eating you might want to try bunny introductions to see if it helps.

How long did you have misty before she passed?

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve been through this several times before and it’s so hard.

There is no need to rush into making a decision about what to do for Ginger. Keep an eye on him to make sure he’s eating enough, you may see him be more “quiet” for a while, and that’s ok. If you start to notice signs of depression then you may consider another rabbit. Even fostering can help a bun that’s grieving. I did this for Bun Jovi when I lost Bertha. I wasn’t ready to adopt and bond at first, but having the fosters as neighbors for him really brought back his spark. Giving him a stuffy to snuggle with can also help.
